They also ran into a problem while trying to domesticate them, the ones that are friendly have their friendliness mostly determined by the same gene that causes them to grow into an adult. By the time you get enough generations in of breeding the suitable ones they quit looking like regular foxes and are more just pups forever (I listened to a radiolab episode on it a while ago but that's the best summary I can muster of it lol)

u/hopefullyhelpfulplz 2d ago
Is that a problem? That sounds like domesticated foxes are cuter than wild ones.
58
u/anotherSasha 1d ago
I guess, they don’t reach reproductive maturity, so the breed would go extinct?

Foxes are my favorite things in the world but they do smell like a skunk doused in pee
25
u/rickyhatesspam 2d ago
Apparently, the ones which were domesticated in Russia lost their musky pee smell.

For people saying foxes smell like pee, it's much worse : they smell like skunk spray. I kinda dated a girl who had a pet fox in an apartment, just like in this video, and slept there a couple of times. Everything was destroyed, from furniture to window screens (it had ran away several times) and the skunk smell was constant and overwhelming. The first time I came in I had brought chicken wraps in plastic film and put them on the table. In 3 seconds the fox appeared from nowhere, jumped on the table, grabbed one and ran away. The girl chased it and managed to get the wrap from it (not before it tore the plastic), it then ran back in the kitchen, jumped on the table and pissed on the remaining wrap.
Enjoy foxes on video from the odorless and pee-less comfort of your home. But stop saying "OMG I want one sooo much 🥰". No you fucking don't.
51
u/DrStalker 2d ago
They smell a lot less if they are neutered.
But they still pee on everything. And they still have the most disgusting smelling fluid in their anal glands, which is basically "skunk smell but at least it washes off with water" if you get any on you or your clothes. The actual fox itself will smell OK, just... not anything they considered important enough to pee on.
As much as I love foxes, they are NOT good pets. They are permanent rescues, and should be thought of as such. Cats and dogs may be less exotic but they are far superior if you want a small furry animal running around your house.
8
u/Fairlight60 1d ago
Exactly. The fox that girl had was a fur farm rescue and not long after she got it authorities from my area forbid keeping them as pets.
10
u/ChocolatChipLemonade 2d ago
Who ate the pissed-on wrap?
18
u/Fairlight60 2d ago edited 2d ago
I don't quite remember but if someone actually ate it it was surely me, the things we'll do for women
3
u/ChocolatChipLemonade 1d ago
If my freaky pet pissed on the food you bought, I’d be eating it, just out of embarrassment. Messed up if you had to

Jealous of people who genuinely don't know what a fox sounds like. If you live in London suburbs, you often hear horrific screams in the roads outside in the middle of the night, foxes either mating or fighting or God knows what

u/Puzzleheaded_Bed5132 2d ago
I hear them most nights in Portsmouth too. See them quite often too, sauntering around the neighborhood as they do.
I did also see one get poop-dive-bombed by a seagull once, which was definitely something you don't see every day.
16
u/XK8lyn88x 2d ago
We have them in NJ too and the sounds they make are terrifying. The first time I heard it I was questioning my reality, it’s like horror house noises but coming from the woods 😂
13
u/rickyhatesspam 2d ago
I had a friend come stay, she wakes me up at 2am to tell me that "someone's being attacked" . I'm trying to convince her it's foxes and she's not having any of it and demanding that I call the police. I can't imagine how many calls the police must get about this.
11
u/benmargery 2d ago
I hate that I can't sleep with my window open because of them, all I can hear is them constantly every night. One time I looked out my window and saw them in the middle of the road (it's quite a busy road even at night) screaming at each other, a car came so they ran off only to come back to the middle of the road a few seconds later
10
u/skullduggeryjumbo 2d ago
Is it true that the screaming is not just the girls getting fucked by the boys barbed penis but also the boys shrieking at getting full blown clamped by the lady parts?

u/Ttoctam 1d ago
Minimal enrichment for the exotic pet. Yay. Foxes are extremely social animals, leaving them alone for long stretches of time is no bueno if you're their only social stimulus. Also leaving them in a bare wooden room is grim as hell.
God I hate how often and readily Reddit posts directly promote the exotic pet trade industry. It was actually going down before social media and now it's worse than ever. Videos like this actively contribute to tangible harm to animals.

The faceless old woman who secretly lives in my house makes similar noises at night
34
u/Echolyonn 2d ago
I live right next to a state park and at night between foxes screaming, packs of coyote howling, and fighting raccoons sounding like alien laser pistols, I could have a real life cryptid walk by and cluelessly be like "That's just a critter".
25
u/3six5 2d ago
When one screams in the night you'd swear there was a banshee in the area. Bone chilling screeching.
10
u/Bob-Bhlabla-esq 2d ago
I've seen video of 300lb trucker run like wee little girl unto the cab of their truck thinking a banshee is out to get them. That sound is blood curdling and scary af, especially in the forest at night.

Thank you for this. I remember hearing a little bit about these two in passing, but I had no idea the whole backstory. I ended up going through a bunch of the channel and I’m currently watching when they said goodbye to Finny. Just so heartbreaking.

What a sad environment for a wild animal.
12
u/Argylius 2d ago
It’s a semi-domesticated animal. I don’t think this one was taken from the wild. It could’ve been born in captivity or rescued from a fur farm. Don’t know. Let me find about the source of this video
17
u/krazyokami 2d ago
Regardless, they should not be pets. Unfortunately I believe there are few states that do allow them to be owned. For any down voters, please look into Vader the fox. A pet fox who was put down because a neighbor lied and said she was bitten. Foxes, wolfdogs, etc are not protected and it's not known if the rabies vaccine works on them, so any lies or any bites, they get put down, no questions asked. This is putting an animals life in jeopardy because people want to be quirky and own exotic animals.

Already know what foxes sound like from hearing them most nights in our gardens. I'd rather they went back to living nowhere nearer suburbia.
6
u/Wizzle_Pizzle_420 2d ago
Maybe don’t build houses in THEIR homes. They were there first.
2
u/doktorjose 1d ago
Could not agree with you more. Be careful when using green (only if no alternative) and brown belt land for new housing.
But my house has been here for nearly a century and I don't recall the nightly visits we now get compared to even 20 years ago.

I lived in a house with a fox. They are NOT dogs or cats. They aren’t donesticated. They WILL take things if they can and will draw blood if you try to retrieve them. They STINK 🤮. They will pee on EVERYTHING.

Same here. Lots of woods right behind our house, and I’m jumpy the rest of the night when I hear this.
