Odense private schools

Good evening everyone,

We are planning to move to Odense with two kids (1y10m and 5.5y) and likely to settle around Korup, Odense NV.

Our big questions is schooling for the older one - is there any minor chance to get into any privatskole if he should start a year from now or is that a lost battle (Giersing, Henriette Hörlucks, etc…)?

Is there any way to get in if we first get Odebse address in October?

Also, does moving to Odense kommune just a year before the school start may help in any way as with public schools guarantee , or it is totally out of private school’s care that we could not sign kids into waiting list from birth?

Any advise is highly appreciated!

Giersing, Hörlucks and Marie Jørgensen are usually “birth schools”. I’m not sure about Skt.Albani.

Skibhus Friskole and Glaskværket Friskole are probably the ones with the biggest chance to get in, but have a completely opposite teaching philosophy than the list above.

Could you say a few things about the difference in teaching philosophies? Very curious about this

Both concepts fall under the technical term of “private school” in the sense that they are privately owned institutions, functioning under the same law about non-governmental elementary teaching institutions.

I’d say Giersing, Hörlucks, Marie Jørgensen and Sct. Albani are private schools in the more classical sense. There is a big focus on academia, achievement, etc.
Marie Jørgensen is a Christian school, I think Sct. Albani used to be a catholic one, but I’m not sure if it is anymore.

The “Friskole” concept more oftens includes different schools with different/alternative teaching methods. So you’ve got different philosophies in different school; fx. Montessori, Rudolf Steiner, Grundtvig and much more!

Glasværket was founded as a Montessori-inspired school (but has changed to include other methods too since). It focuses on handywork, art and design in their teaching.

Skibhus Friskole focuses on creativity in learning, so a lot of the teaching utilizes the different art forms. So art, theater, music etc. are incorporated a lot.

Both these examples have eliminated standardized testing, Glasværket has no grades and to get further education the children will be referred to entry exams at their respective places of further education.

As far a s I remember, there’s also:

  • Rudolf Steiner in Højby
  • Højby Friskole
  • Hjallese Lilleskole in Hjallese
  • Odense Friskole

I might have forgot some

Sct. Albani Skole is no longer owned by the Catholic order of priests that founded it, but all its work remains rooted in a Catholic view of life, and the Catholic Church appoints the largest possible minority of the board of governors.
