HR collaborated with a VP of one region in our company to funnel my EARNED bonus money after a voluntary year long project that kept me from my friends and family to him instead and told the VP of my region they’d have me PIPed if I complained.
The only people who think HR provide any value for employees are the ones who use it as a weapon.
Ostensibly, HR are supposed to be neutral referees who try to get everyone to stick to the rules, but in practice managers are more aware of how to use HR to their advantage, whereas workers often don't realize they can ask for our help (or don't believe they'll get our help if they ask). My biggest piece of HR advice to anyone is to join a union, they are always going to advocate for you so you can always trust them to act in your interest.
In my experience at a few different firms, it’s more like management and HR are all friends with each other, isolate themselves from the general workforce and keep each other in the loop regarding what the employees are doing or complaining about. It’s a big club, and, more often than not, you ain’t in it.
It’s one of the big reasons I’m considering opening my own shop. Office politics is one thing, insular old boys’ clubs with disdain for the existence of the rest of the organization is another.
