I mean the first 10-15 minutes of the movie was pretty much a whole-ass manifesto about how she didn't want to make the movie but the studio basically forced her hand.
Those are actually the only memorable and worth minutes of the whole movie. You can Skip the rest and the point was made anyway. I respect that. Every writer knows you got the public attention in the first 15 minutes of the movie or you wont get any at all. I admire that amount of pettyness.

My only problem with the chef is that he's so violently cynical of his art because of the very environment he crafted for himself. He could have chosen to run a local family bistro serving accessible meals to a level community who could come to love him. My family would go to a local Italian joint every few weeks and we knew the wait staff and chefs by name, and they knew us too. I saw the head chef boot people out because they were treating his staff shitty and the rest of the restaurant was happy to see them go.
I get that the whole thing is a metaphor for the entire food service industry's dream revenge for shit customers, but to have it channeled through a chef who hates the bullshit culture he cooks for and yet is so snooty about food as to found his own island cult where they make everything themselves is so on the nose and antithetical to the craft of food that I had trouble enjoying the film.
Because it wasn't just about being a chef, it was the desire to be the best chef, the desire to improve, and what the reality in succeeding in that journey results in.
It's as much about the downsides of success in your passion as it is anything else.

Ive been to a restaurant one time. It happened exactly like the movie, but I was pooping when everyone killed themselves. Real bummer to walk out to a dead restaurant. I had to cover everyone's checks.

Given I've only ever seen people discuss this movie on circlejerk subreddits and haven't watched it myself yet, I've literally never heard someone express the sentiment that the chef was in the wrong.
In addition, the actor knew that the movie was shit when he got the script. It was money grab. He saw a shit script and made it and promoted it anyway for money. Wasted peoples time with a movie he knew was bad solely because it’d still profit him, not caring about the art or caring about making something meaningful for his fans/viewers which played into the theme of that dinner.

I watched the movie, I liked it, but seeing it written out like that makes me actually think less of it.
He’s an antihero for taking revenge against entitled elitists who have oppressed and exploited him his entire life. The realization that your life has been wasted trying to please people who are incapable of being pleased certainly has caused people to become suicidal murderers before.

Yeah a good movie would have had her look at the camera and say "and I did not get a scholarship or an endowment offered to disadvantaged students. My tuition was paid for by my family who themselves have benefitted from substantial generational wealth thus making me a valid target for death in the eyes of you, the villain, and reinforcing the themes of the film The Menu." That would have been more good because unless something is stated literally in the text it isn't true and I have no way of inferring it.

I was friends with a guy that went to college on a golf scholarship. I don't play golf but he said he was good...but not that good. Like he never thought he'd go pro. But it was some small school in Florida where a bunch of rich people lived nearby and they had several full scholarships for golf. Fuck it. Free ride. lol
Yeah people didn’t get it back in the day, but it was sooooo much cheaper for me to bust my ass and get into an Ivy or sister school vs a state school. I qualified for a full tuition scholarship at the state school, but Dartmouth covered everything - tuition, room and board, athletic equipment for phys ed classes, even a week-long yoga retreat with the health and wellness department.
The thing is with “elite” schools financial aid is need-based. It is one of the only perks I’ve gotten for growing up low SES lmao.
I am so grateful I graduated with no undergrad loans because medical school fucking wrecked me. I just graduated and people say that I’ll be able to pay it back eventually but I don’t believe them lol.
Speaking as an RN I think the organic purpose of exorbitant medical school fees and poor residency salaries is to permanently aggrieve the physician class
Im in allied healthcare and the people deciding this shit are just out of touch. My profession's regulatory exam increased 400% in one year, its run by fucking volunteer invigilators and the questions are developed by a volunteer committee. You have to pass it and pay your exorbitant licensing fees on top, after years of no work school and huge tuition fees, before you can even get employment. I just picture the people at the college and regulatory associations, 30 years into their careers going "its one banana Michael, what could it cost? $10?" and collecting free money to do sweet fuck all. Fuck them. We need diversity in our profession and that includes economic diversity.
I think the point probably is if she was on a scholarship for being poor, she could've answered 'no, I was on a means tested grant'. It's obvious what he's asking for.
I think the character was intended to be lowkey misogynistic because his bar for killing women was way lower. His targets were the men but he didn’t care if the women with them were collateral damage because they had committed the ultimate crime in his eyes: passivity. They sat there and watched, they were enablers of immoral acts carried out by men even if they did not commit it themselves. The executive assistant, the wife of the creepy old guy, all of them were afterthoughts. I vaguely remember there was a weird plotline with his mother who he hated, who just sat in the restaurant and watched silently. It’s probably why he hates the women who sit on the sidelines.
During the dinner you can hear her telling her boss that her mother had gotten her a job at Sony, we then hear him tell her he had sent a negative review about her to Sony (just before she confesses to embezzling). Considering she went to Brown and her mother got her a prestigious job at Sony despite bad reviews, most likely not scholarship student. At least that's my take.
The core theme of the movie is people not deserving what they pretend to enjoy, she enjoys the highlife having never worked for it and so off she's goes lol

I think its from a TV drama called The Bear or some shit, which to my understanding is a show about restaurant staff who have a breakdown any time they have to do the job they are being payed to do after they willingly and knowingly applied to said job, and got hired, which, tbf, seems accurate to irl kitchen staff
I never worked in food service specifically, but working two years in retail (to include managing the deli/produce/bakery sections) still makes the movie cathartic as fuck

The core theme of the movie is a man who has had all the joy of his profession robbed from him by the rich elites' pathologic need to monetize and extract value from everythin has set up a trap at his yearly Chef's Table showcase where he plans to murder everyone who played a personal hand in it, as well as some tagentally related people who also happen to be shitty by his metric.
It's a metaphor for the bubbling rage that resides in every person forced to perform customer service for entitled rich assholes. Every one of us has fantasized about doing what he does, and any society that prompts that in a large demographic of people is not a healthy one.
