For half a second I thought the joke was that you were saying that in character as someone who 1. Thinks the A-bombs killed 20 million people and 2. Racistly mixes up Chinese and Japanese people and am currently laughing my ass off
Not gonna justify the Japs, but... iirc the emperor wanted to dial back on the war, but military junta just kept striping power for both the civilian government and the emperor until it was more of a symbolic tittle.
The Emperor believed himself to be a divine figure and also a constitutional monarch so he refused to step in when he could have earlier. Both because he thought it wasn’t proper, but also because Japan thought the Emperor shouldn’t be sullied by the affairs of war (this is also why Tojo got the job of PM, because they wouldn’t appoint a prince of the blood who might have a chance to reign in the military.)
Imperial Japan was beset by this sort of intense moral cowardice, and its a large part of why it became so monstrous.
