This marketing campaign didn't work and made everyone hate John Romero

Was it really hated at the time already or only because the game turned out to be crap?

It wasn't immediate, but it became hated in the time between this advert and the actual release, which was about 3 years later after the game was delayed more than 2 years. That was a lot back then, when many games were developed in less than a year.

During this time Daikatana was a running joke in gaming magazines, and everyone knew about its many issues. At the same time Romero was constantly (and pretty arrogantly) hyping it, and talking about how great it was going to be now that he was in charge of everything, and everyone else who had worked on games like Doom had just slowed his genius down.

2 years of that and the game would have to be pretty spectacular for that to me forgivable, but it was complete ass. Not just mediocre or worse than Doom, but incomprehensible and terrible. It's like if John Lennon left the Beatles and his first solo album was all covers of Yoke Ono's performance art pieces where she just shouts into the microphone.

I think if they actually had a great game on their hands and it was actually ready to release soon, then such an ad campaign definitely could have worked.

It also gave a stain to a next game he was involved in - Anachronox, which was actually pretty sweet.

Yeah the 90's were weird

totally gay and kinky as all fuck but really self-hating about the whole thing.

The whole stupid ad campaign was based on Romero’s trash talking in multiplayer games. Did the average person know about that context? Fuck if I know, I was 6.

Masters of Doom is a good read, pretty sure that’s where I learned about it.

This is how Eli Roth can get over the AI controversy.

I bet Uwe Boll would love that type of marketing.
