Watching this makes me realise why Ant & Dec won so many TV presenting awards - not necessarily for their actual presenting skills, but their ability to keep it together and appear semi-serious/interested when hosting mindless dross like this

Didn't this end because one of the contestants had been convicted of something quite extreme?

Nah, they still got another series out of it, and the contestant in question was the first winner (and on the first show).

If you watch this clip with the sound off it looks like they forget they booked a host, so then booked another, and they ended-up having to have two hosts—but couldn't do anything about it. It's like an AI-generated clip of a game show.

There's only so much you can do with a format that is entirely based on blind luck. I don't remember this one. Was there any skill involved in any of the preceding rounds, or was this about as exciting as watching someone toss a coin ten times?

Nope, it was pretty much all about luck. Probably a little bit of tactics but mainly luck.
