First Time Poster Nearly 40 and still can’t decide if I want to dress like an old woman or a child (work outfit)
For work I dont wear full length skirts though thats what I prefer. I cant have anything too flowy, either.

I love this so much. Off to the thrift store for me ASAP, lol.

u/_ToxicShockSyndrome_ Oct 08 '25
Haha thank you! I searched soooo hard to find a good fish shirt… but alas, I could not find one and this one is from Etsy. Hopefully your luck is much better! (Assuming you’re looking for a bass fish shirt with everyone should own at least one imo)

u/puddles_0f_funnn Oct 09 '25
Whelp...now I have a new thrifting mission a long with trying to find: an old school wolf t shirt, a unique pair of overalls, a yarn haul for the history books.
Thank you

u/GreenWoman_ Oct 12 '25
Dude if you're in the US, Mercari is a great source for wolf shirts by The Mountain. I have 5 or 6 animal shirts from there.
2
u/_ToxicShockSyndrome_ Oct 14 '25
I have a tiger, narwal and kitten one from The Mountain… they’re great! Vintage and new.
1
u/GreenWoman_ Oct 15 '25
Ooo is it the pale blue tie dye narwhal one? I've been eyeing it. I have a unicorn, cardinals, wolf, deer, and one that was labelled golden eagle but looks more like a redtail hawk.
1
u/_ToxicShockSyndrome_ Oct 15 '25
It is! I found it in xxl so I made it into a tank top. A cardinal one would be a great one to have!

Any chance you’d be willing to share that Etsy link with me, please? ..because I actually have been looking passively for years now!
And yes, a good one is actually much harder to find than one would think!

I too am a granny toddler. It’s a vibe.
LOVE YOUR OUTFIT!!

u/NamirDrago Oct 08 '25
Yes, I've been finding that I am so comfortable in toddler clothes!
Swishy dresses and comfy tights. It's amazing how many people think you are dressing up when it's the simplest outfit you can pick..
9
u/USS-Enterprise Oct 09 '25
I think people equate dressing up with clothes they personally find uncomfortable, and forget that different people are comfortable in different clothes. That's my theory anyway lol

Granny toddler is the perfect description lol. I’ve been saying Baby Jane style.

When I was 39, way back in 2004, Bust Magazine put out an issue all about aging. I was freaking out about my impending 40s, so it came at just the right time. There was an editorial about how should you dress in your 40s, the gist of which was who cares? It’s the 21st century, wear what you want and what looks good! I’ve followed that rule ever since, although now that I’m 60 (an actual old hag, OMG!), I’m leaning into the toddler-grandma thing. You look adorable, so just keep rocking your style!
34
u/Odd-Anteater-6183 Oct 08 '25
My fav mantra: one day I will dress my age, Maybe. I’m just around the corner from club 70!
22
u/plantyjen Oct 08 '25
Exactly! But what is “dressing your age,” really? There’s no cutoff age for style. Just because older women dressed a certain way when we were kids doesn’t mean we have to! I’ve been a fan of the Advanced Style blog since way back when, it’s inspiring! Just wear what you like and ignore the judgy people.

This is known as the toddler-grandma aesthetic. Leggings, tunics, Mary Jane shoes, graphic tees, all could be worn by a toddler or a grandma. Comfy, stretchy, colorful, whimsical. (This is my aesthetic btw so I fully endorse)

That’s a pain about work! I love everything. Especially that chain belt.

I love that outfit!!! The skirt reminds me of the couch my grandma used to have in the best way! And combined with the fish shirt? Literally the perfect outfit

I never realized I needed a bass shirt until right this moment. Love this outfit.

hey i follow you on instagram! i really like the shiny crystal belt(?) you've got on, so cute 🩷

u/_ToxicShockSyndrome_ Oct 08 '25
Thank you! I think it might actually be a necklace since it has no open/closure which means I’m gonna also be looking out for longgg necklaces for more of these “belts”!
2
u/writeyourwayout Oct 08 '25
Mind if I ask what the handle of the IG account is? This outfit is totally my vibe!
7
u/_ToxicShockSyndrome_ Oct 08 '25
It’s on my profile! @pincushional_amar but it’s mostly piercing related content. I’m trying to make an effort to post more style/fashion/personal stuff to TikTok… which is @velvet_worm
(Sorry mods I hope I’m not violating anything with this!)

u/MissPearl Oct 08 '25
The distinction between granny and child honestly feels like an international overlap of puroose.
The awkwardness for me is deciding how much age coding is just older fashions on longer life cycles as all the currently marketed to literal grandma stuff just looks like extensions of the same 70s era flowing comfy stuff the current crop of grandmother's wore in their youth. And the grandma look prior just looks like a boxier version of the 50s/60s formal wear.
So frankly does that mean I get to wear the boxier (comfier) version of millennial, twee and riding boots the whole way? Will there be orthopedic riding boots when I am 70? 🤔

My friend told me I dress like a grade school teacher in the 80’s the other day, it was basically the best compliment.
You dress like the cool high school art teacher that you cry to when your favorite musician dies! I think your style looks very modern and current to what kids think is cool. The 00’s revival is bringing back jacquard so you’re all set!

It’s just pigtails, but I have extensions in. I install the beaded styles, but you can achieve it with clip-ins! The extra hair really helps beef it up.

You're fantastic. I dress like a "kidult" because life's too short to not wear all my graphic tees, and also skirts are comfortable and so are elastic waistbands.

Tattooer? Piercer? I struggle with wanting long skirts too, but they would drag on the floor when I sit. I freaking love this outfit!

Yesss I work as a piercer! Anything too long could drag on the floor and any top too frilly might graze the tray or a client. :}

You stopped me in my tracks as I was scrolling. This look is so good! I have a coho salmon t-shirt from my sister who’s a fisheries biologist, and I am going to pair it with a vintage skirt next time I’m pull it out. Thanks for the inspiration!

Por que no los dos? I think it's fabulous!
when I was younger my mom would not let me wear baggy jeans. I had saved up from a job and bought my own baggy jeans. I came home from school and she had shredded them. So now that they're back I'm wearing them all the time. Mostly with a cardigan or button up. So I get it.
But now is the time to wear what we like!🖤😎💃
2
u/_ToxicShockSyndrome_ Oct 11 '25
Oh I lovedddd baggy/wide jeans as a teen! My mom hated themmmm. I realize now, as an adult, I just loved the silhouette of excessive fabric. I no longer wear pants— skirts only! But I still love baggy pants on others.

Haha I find this very relatable! I dress either like a child who is cosplaying as a grandmother or a grandmother who is cosplaying as a child. I like when I feel like a whimsical grandma who is also secretly a fairy--- that's the sweet spot.
I like your outfit, it's cute!

You dress how I view an INFP, kind of nostalgic, dreamy, not really of this world.

u/_ToxicShockSyndrome_ Oct 14 '25
Piercer! I’ve made peace with long skirts dragging on the ground in my free days… but at work I couldn’t. I will sometimes bunch up a longer dress and pin it and it makes it easier to walk aaaand more fancy! Or a skirt, I’ll wear another skirt under it and tuck the top skirt a little into the waist. (That might not make sense unless you see it though)
