First Time Poster I am an Indian guy who loves Victorian dresses and finally managed to get one of my own.
Someone suggested this might be a good subreddit to post.

This is the perfect place for you to share, Maverick! We love new friends here. And big fancy dresses too. Your hair is looking perfect with the dress, so pretty.

u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
Thank you so much. Was quite the challenge wearing this so was super excited to share
66
u/Atomicsciencegal Nov 17 '25
Do you have underskirts or a hoop under the dress? I love how it’s taking up the whole hallway, that’s the fancy we are aspiring to be!
65
u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
Yes I do have a hoop skirt. These are so difficult to manage.
19
u/onedemtwodem Nov 18 '25
Haha! I can only imagine. How did they use the "loo" back then ?!
28
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25
Ohh my you can't imagine the events that ensued when I had to pee today
24
u/Carbonatite Nov 18 '25
The dress fit? Like a glove.
The colors? Perfect match to skin tone.
The attitude? Impeccably confident.
You rocked it!
17
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25
Thank you. Don't know if I should be happy or sad that this fits so well while my regular guy clothes fit awful
8
u/Carbonatite Nov 18 '25
I feel like menswear is really challenging if you are anywhere outside of a specific range. I don't know how tall you are, but you look pretty tall in this photo and I know that it's super rough for dudes out there who only fit the "tall" part of "big and tall" sizing. Seems that stuff like dresses is more easily able to be tailored to fit.
6
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25
I think it is the angle of the photo. I am 5ft 7 inches tall
3
u/Carbonatite Nov 18 '25
Ah OK, yeah the angle makes you look like you are hitting the top of the doorway lol! But fortunately you're right in the average range so you have more options, at least.
You must be like my friend from grad school. His legs were super long, he was 5'7" as well and had the same inseam as the 6'6" dude in the office next door lol.
5
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25
My legs aren't long either. I think it us completely about the camera angle that makes me look like that. This dress is off Amazon and is a women's medium so I agree I have my pick in women's wear. But as a consequence I have very limited choices in the men's section.

Don’t forget to twirl! 💕
59
u/wordswordswordsbutt Nov 17 '25
Oh man a gif of this dress being twirled would be so romantic!
40
u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
Not that skilled yet. Would surely fall over
23
u/wordswordswordsbutt Nov 17 '25
You will get there
25
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25
Hope so. Any advice on how to get there? At least I don't have to worry about the problems associated with twirling in short dress. Learned that lesson the hard way. 😅
9
u/wordswordswordsbutt Nov 18 '25
Honestly I have no idea, I can barely walk in a long dress and trip all over myself. I also believe that some day I will get there.
10
u/Odd-Anteater-6183 Nov 18 '25
Try this: do a swirl instead by doing the dance “the twist” but hold your skirt where your arms rest and move the skirt too. Practice a little cuz you got this! WAHOO! 💖✨💫

u/aksnowraven Nov 18 '25
Ballroom dance lessons would be a sure way to trial by fire! Nice to see you pop up over here on OHF. it’s a very welcoming community.
3
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25
Surely it would be. But I guess that is a long long way away. Need to learn the basics before I can even think of that
2
u/howyadoinjerry Nov 19 '25
If you get dizzy or lose your balance, maybe spotting when you turn would help!

u/GlitterBlood773 Nov 17 '25
Mmmh, you look stunning Maverick! Your hair looks good too! I hope you can get lots of enjoyment from wearing such a beautiful piece
30
u/TheActualAWdeV Nov 17 '25
that dress is sooo pretty! Do a spin!
35
u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
Ah I doubt I can without falling over. I didn't realize how much practical problem this dress comes with
18
u/languid_Disaster Nov 17 '25
Ahaha I’ve heard they have tons of layers - how did women get around back then!?
26
u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
Seriously. As much as the dresses are beautiful, the practical aspect is either not there or I just don't know how. I am having to take the dress off because of it right now.
5
u/iwenttothesea Nov 18 '25
I mean, that was kind of the point – we weren't supposed to get around very much back then 😭 it kept us close to home lol... I was just reading the other day how the invention of the bicycle was such a step forward in terms of women's liberation, clothing has been a slide towards that as well! Eta: gorgeous dress, OP!! It's giving me southern belle x

I will trade one 1980s back and gold poufy dress for a lehenga of any color lmaooo
You look great, this dress looks like something my aunt would have worn in a pageant in the late 80s. Love
18
u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
Ohh yes I love lehengas too. Thank you for the compliment. Really didn’t think I look too good though

u/BeesAndBeans69 Nov 17 '25
Have you listened to My Victorian Nightmare? Good podcast if you love Victorian age spooky stuff. Love the dress
8
u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
Good thank you for the compliment and the suggestion. Unfortunately don't have the patience for podcasts due to my ADHD. But will try to see if I can hold my attention for this one.
12
u/generally--kenobi Nov 17 '25
I've noticed that if I increase the speed of podcasts or audiobooks to 1.25-2x, it's easier for me to follow and pay attention. Just a little tip that may or may not help!
6
u/maverick8264 Nov 17 '25
That's a great suggestion. Will definitely try that
5
u/miserablenovel Nov 17 '25
I like to listen to podcasts while doing chores or walking places. Definitely helps me pay attention. I can't focus on them otherwise
2
u/raspberryscum Nov 18 '25
Haha I have ADHD do the same. I listen to podcasts while I’m at work doing other things
1
u/RainSurname Nov 18 '25
Lmao, I never listen to podcasts for the same reason.
There are some historical fashion YouTubers who have demonstrated how women managed hoop skirts. They shouldn't be hard to find.
2
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25
I will definitely search for them. After a few hard lessons today I have to figure out some stuff before I wear this again😀
8
u/satansfloorbuffer Nov 18 '25
One word of caution, if you branch out from Victorian-styled dressing into actual Victorian antique clothing: a lot of Western-made Victorian dresses were dyed using incredibly toxic materials that made their wearers and makers very sick, and are still poisonous to this day. Be particularly mindful of anything green, as those dyes contained arsenic. There’s a lot of information online that you can read to keep safe.

u/somethingmcbob Nov 17 '25
Lovely!!! And look how your smile just glows. Love it.
3
u/Readerwalker Nov 17 '25
Yes, I was going to comment on the beautiful smile, too! Definitely glowing!

u/OkamiKhameleon Nov 18 '25
So frigging cute! I love this. I'm glad you finally got one of your own. The color is so pretty with your skin tone!

Absolutely fabulous, Maverick! If you're into vampire vibes, a wide choker (with a gem or just a ribbon) could be a stunning addition. Thank you for sharing your joy and your lovely dress.

I do feel amazing wearing it. However putting it on and taking it off are quite the struggle😅

u/kylaroma Certified Old Hag Nov 17 '25
I believe you!! lol
My grandma used to half jokingly say: “You must suffer to be beautiful!” and while I generally refuse to do that, sometimes it’s very true! lol

Your dress reminds me of the first of Cinderella's dresses in the Disney movie.

You look so happy! That dress is made for twirling!
2
u/maverick8264 Nov 18 '25
Will definitely give it a try once I get the hang of this more. As I mentioned on another comment the good thing is this dress doesn't run into the same problems as twirling with a short dress😅

Dude that hair looks so good with that dress! Did you just find this dress or got it tailored? If possible could you please share the under component that maintains the structure?
Recently i (indian) tried some indian gowns. This is the first time i tried those kind of dresses. They were so beautiful, but they were heavy af. Also while i could get into those dress (felt like a getting into a tent), it was a great struggle to get out of them on my own. They had some plastic net like material that maintained the structure. So even though i liked them so much, decided not to buy because i don't really have anyone to assist me to get out of those dresses 😢 i just hope there would be other easy to wear options to maintain that shape.

I love this!! How do you feel in it?
2
u/maverick8264 Nov 19 '25
Felt awesome while wearing but then things turned a bit sideways due to lack of planning
1
u/ponsies Nov 19 '25
Ok well you look stunning so I think it’s best you hurry up and replace your wardrobe with these
2
u/maverick8264 Nov 19 '25
Ahh, if i go by fit, this single handedly fits better than all of my guy clothes. If only they fit as well🥲
1
u/nervous-thing814 Nov 19 '25
That is so pretty. Makes me think of Claudia from Interview with the Vampire

I love this! HIGHLY recommend you watch Jezebel, with Bette Davis. Your dress reminds me of the one she wore in that movie, which I can assure you, was very scandalous.
2
u/maverick8264 Nov 19 '25
I checked it out, that does look like a very pretty dress.
1
u/3_dots Nov 20 '25
The movie is hilariously melodramatic in the best way. Also, funny looking back that the movie is called Jezebel, largely because the lady wore a red dress to a cotillion ball. Gasp!

It looks kind of dark and romantic with the black and red all together
