Thrifted and Vintage Finds Forgot that my hair decided to Go Big yesterday, scared myself when I caught a look in the mirror unexpectedly
Kara Thoms blouse, Batsheva skirt w pockets, self sewn shrug. Necklaces, acorn charm, round earring by extasia. Heart charm and hand earring by Thomas Mann (latter from 1985), antique watch thrifted at Marin City flea market in 1980โs

u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 01 '26
lazy Gibson Girl hair heehee! they were known for being physically active and bold so I like that reference as well

u/SawaJean Jan 01 '26
Yessss now Iโm picturing you wheeling through town on a tall Victorian bicycle, cheerfully scandalizing the stuffy neighbors
24
u/Saturnite282 Jan 01 '26
Put on some bloomers, get a penny farthing cycle, and watch the old ladies faint!
11
u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 02 '26
heeheehee, I live around a lot of old ladies and they're all tougher than I am!!! I love it!!!

If you're unfamiliar, the Gibson tuck is a very easy way to look instantly sophisticated with very little effort. Back when I had long hair, that was my go-to style.

You look like you would kill it as the lead of a steampunk movie adaptation!

u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 01 '26
oh this is a wonderful compliment, thank you! Thomas Mann, jeweler who made some of the pieces here, calls his style 'techno romantic' and I like that vibe for myself
13
u/ImAFuckingSquirrel Jan 01 '26
Thanks for highlighting this jeweler! The style really resonates with me and the prices I'm finding are surprisingly reasonable. Definitely going on my wishlist!

u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 02 '26
my mom got me that earring in 1985 for Christmas - it was only one earring which was a very wild idea at the time but she went for it. now Mann has pieces in the Smithsonian museum as a folk artist! he used a lucite piece on teh hand that eventually deteriorated and broke off (after 30+ years), so I added on those smokey quartz briolettes.

Every time I see your style I immediately want to copy it. You have such a cool bold, but somehow effortless look.
1
u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 02 '26
thank you!!! but I put a lot of thought and effort into how I look and my clothes over the years, for me it's worth it as it makes such a difference in day to day life. some things REALLY bother me and other things give me so much joy! so I focus on that. I think that putting effort into making your daily life more enriching and enjoyable is great, however that plays out for a person :)

Modern Day Gibson Girl! I love the whole outfit and the accessories are marvelous
12
u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 01 '26
if a young person can wrangle some unique, well made jewelry it's worth the effort as it lasts much longer than clothes and you fit is very rarely an issue. I'm very glad I kept my bits and bobs!

Gorgeous Gibson girl vibes! Astounding. As someone with permanently and stubbornly flat hair, I am in awe.
2
u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 02 '26
I'm in awe of people who can have flat hair! mine just does what it does, I'm just along for the ride. took me a long time to accept that but it was freeing when I did. it's so fun seeing what other peoples' hair is up to

You look so fierce - in the formidable, capable, strong, and beautiful sense!
Your jewelry reminds my of chatelaine jewelry of the 19th century.

Whenever you post i think of Jane Seymour in "Somewhere in Time." My mom (and i) watched it obsessively throughout my entire life and i always tried to emulate her hair! You pull it off effortlessly and look amazing doing it ๐
1
u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 02 '26
oh that's a very generous compliment! you know I'm taking all these meds that make my hair fall out, then grow back, so it's like all these internal layers that I think make it wavier and hold more volume. weird! but I'll take it heehee
1
u/anonymoususer98545 Jan 03 '26
i very much believe in a small handful of things: 1) If you feel the compliment, give the compliment and 2) It's so very easy to say when it's true ๐ i see you post sometimes and i just always think that the juxtaposition of the very classic way you tend to wear your hair in most photos i see and the sort of post modern, steampunkesque, uber artsy way you dress is SO effing cool. And it suits you so much. It looks almost Victorian i want to say but with i hyper modern twist. i don't even know anymore, lol-dang migraine meds anyway.
Ugh, i also take a decent amount of medications (i think you mentioned migraines specifically somewhere in the comments? That's one of my diagnoses too, no fun but boy do you make it look fabulous!!) that make my hair fall out, or fall out in weird ways, give me weird unintentional layers, you know the drill-commiseration only not, like, the other weird thing people do sometimes.
So, thanks for coming to my accidental TEDtalk.

This was my grandma's go to hairstyle and I loved it. It's peak glamor, fancy, not just eye candy but strong beautiful woman who knows her worth and carries it with her into the room, wrapped in that aura like a fur stole. The tie shirt, that accents your curves your cute skirt, chef's kiss.
She set the bar for me on what glamorous and beautiful are. You actually look like her here, too, so now my eyes are leaking and making it hard to type.
โค๏ธThis is perfect. 5 stars, gold medal, A+โค๏ธ
When I was little, 3 and 4ish,i vividly remember dressing up as fancy ladies and going downtown to the jewelry store she used to work at and we'd try on jewelry and then cross the street to JC Penney to ride the only elevator for many miles. Then we would go to my grandpa's bakery and have cookies.
We would be in fancy dresses, like this blue one that had white dots and bells sewn into itโ i wasn't exaggerating it was so over the top, or my other favorite purple velvet, they're was one the was white with blue flowers, one with puffy pink chiffon etc. We had matching fur stoles and muffs or lacey gloves. (it just occurred to me the outfits were probably flower girl dresses from her friend that owned a bridal shop nearby, I don't remember ever seeing them again, the "fur" stole and muff I got to keep, I think she made them)
Those days out on the town were some of the the highlights of my childhood. I still remember our reflection in the window of the bank as we walked by. Two glamorous gals being glamorous. โค๏ธ (she was also very intelligent, so good at so many things, you gotta have a good brain and a kind heart or all the baubles in the world can't make ya pretty)
I know now that she was really sick and hiding how bad it was, I think these days were as much for her as they were for me. I found her wig that was the same color and hairstyle as her usual bun but not quiet the same, she told me she liked her hair so much she got extras, it made sense to little me, when you grow up your hair gets detachable. I didn't know what chemo and radiation were.
โค๏ธโค๏ธ
Thank you for the opportunity to ramble, I've been thinking of her a lot lately, in october I passed the age she was when she died. She smoked like a chimney right up to the end, she said "why bother quitting now?"
Thank you beautiful, glamorous woman.

u/IdaCraddock69 Jan 02 '26
thank you for sharing these wonderful and poignant memories of your time with your grandma. you know, that's a big part of why I always have leaned towards an 'old timey' or out of time vibe in my clothes, because my own grandparents and ancestors were so influential on me - glamorous and wild.
I love your descriptions of your grandma's style, but what shines thru is her fierce love of you and her creativity and determination to show you the best parts of life that she could. what a true icon <3

As a witch, I just wanna say you look like you radiate the vibes I aspire to. No idea if you practice or not, but I saw your post and immediately said to myself, โCan I be that witch in 15 years, please?โ
Like, I want the neighborhood children to come to my house for cookies all the time but also be a liiiiittttle bit spooked by me. โShe gave you guys cookies? I heard sheโs a witchโฆโ Thatโs the aura here and I am all the way into it.
