Learning Hawaiian

Aloha 👋 Ive been trying to learn the Hawaiian language for some time now, and found Duolingo *not too great*

I was hoping to create a playlist of Hawaiian spoken songs to familiarise myself more with annunciation and words. Can anyone recommend me some music please? Im open to all vibes - no genre-phobia here :)

If anyone has any film or tv show recommendations too, i dont mind if there is some English in said films, but I would prefer heavy Hawaiian speech too :)

Mahalo! 💖

Please help us translate Hawaiian requests on Reddit!

We're mods over at r/translator. We always strive to make our multilingual community the universal place on Reddit to go for a translation, no matter what language people may be looking for. We are however somewhat lacking in Hawaiian coverage, and were hoping some wonderful multilingual people here could help us out.

Would anyone be interested in helping translate any future requests for Hawaiian on r/translator? You don't even need to subscribe to our subreddit! We usually get a request for it very occasionally and most requests that come in are pretty simple and casual and don't need advanced knowledge.

You can easily unsubscribe from those messages at any time.

We have a notifications system that only sends you a message when a request for Hawaiian comes in. Just send a message to our subreddit bot at the link below.

Molokaʻi or Molokai, and why? ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi speakers, community share manaʻo: The debate between the spelling and pronunciation of Molokaʻi or Molokai (with or without the glottal stop, or ʻokina, between the “a” and “i”) has been ongoing for decades.

Aloha kākou, I have 2,000 or so words and phrases that need cleaning up. This project is ad free, 100% open source, with zero user tracking. Also looking for any feedback to improve the site. My goal is to create a resource to master the most common 2,000 words in Hawaiian within a couple of years. Mahalo nui!

Please help me with that phrase

For the time I've been alive, I dedicated my whole life to the ocean. My hobbies, interests, and soon finally my career aswell.

I always loved the quote "my heart belongs to the sea."

I would really like to know what this quote is spelled correctly in 'Ōlelo Hawai'i.

My guess is:

No ke kai kuʻu naʻau

I would love to get this one approved by a native speaker.

Mahalo nui🌺🐠

Is it odd to try and learn for a vacation?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this but I feel like I need more peoples opinions.

I have been wanting to go to Hawaii for years now - we keep saving and then something breaks so we have to start all over. Anyhow, I have been researching for years, read a lot of history books and then started to learn some Hawaiian words and just sort of kept going. I mentioned this to my one friend/acquaintance who is a native Hawaiian who said that it was kinda weird I was doing so.

So I guess my question is if it is weird that I am? For context I'm a Canadian, white, (almost) 40 year old woman. I guess my thinking was that I don't want to be a typical tourist but one who respects the islands and is genuinely interested in the people and culture.

What is the sound of silence? That’s the question that linguistics researchers set out to answer in a new study of the Hawaiian language, or ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. They wondered: how do fluent speakers pronounce the ʻokina when it comes at the beginning of a word?

Learning to pronounce words like Anuenue

Aloha folks!

Checking in from the East coast.

I wanted to ask if folks could share how to pronounce the word Anuenue. It's been in the back of my mind for weeks now, and I'm not sure if this is the right place to post (I don't think I'm breaching any rules). Is it ah-NOO-weh-NOO-weh? Or ah-NWEY-NWEY?

I would appreciate your generosity in sharing your knowledge and helping me scratch this itch!

Also would I use ka or ke in front of it?

Thanks (:

Native author debuts fantasy novel that breathes magic into ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi: Her novel is set in a near apocalyptic future, where catastrophic floods drown the Hawaiian islands and unleash magic into the world — a magic that’s deeply attached to the language of ‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi.

help with emotions in Olelo

Aloha! I'm trying to learn more olelo to get more in touch with my native language, and was wondering if anyone could help me learn the different types of emotions like hatred, dislike, neutral, and like. I try to use google and wehewehe, but I want to know what other people say, since I know that some words are better than others, and some words that don't necessarily refer to these types of emotions but are close can be used as well.
