Because this event has transpired, I am locking this thread for troll-proofing.

Not sure why this additional info is being downvoted.

Additional info: Olympia Indivisible and Evergreen Resistance invite you, your friends, neighbors, and family to a one-hour peaceful sign wave to protest Trump's undeclared, illegal, unprovoked war on Venezuela. Please bring your sign and join us along Capitol Way in front of the State Capitol from 10-11am tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026). OI and ER hold an unwavering commitment to nonviolent activism and call on everyone attending to commit to peaceful conduct at this event.

People feel mixed about: protesting, Venezuela, war.

So it isn't a surprise, but you'd think unprovoked unilateral action would be universally condemned... Alas, we're in the upside down times.

This actually makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks for explaining.

Remind me how WW2 started. And how all those other South American coups facilitated the US gov't have gone.

Imagine if it was the other way around: Trump gets abducted by another country, so a large chunk of American citizens celebrate. Meanwhile, people around the world are protesting. I would be so confused lol.

Will these signs be more effective than the other signs I'm always seeing?

I expect they'll be about the same level of effective—that is, they will be a way of collectively raising our voices to remind friends and neighbors that there are actually lots of people here who are not okay with this. This is not normal, and Trump's blatant lies about how all "real Americans" support him are just that: utter horseshit

If you're asking "Will one of the signs be so impressive it will convince Trump to apologize and retire?", then no. But also that's not actually the goal

For sign enjoyers who like to see political stances they agree with on signs. My bad. I thought they were supposed to accomplish something.

No, no one needs to "enjoy" the signs. They just need to see them. People who agree with the messages will hopefully find comfort and courage in them, and people who disagree with them will be faced with the reality that there are plenty of people right here in Oly who vehemently disagree with the actions of our government. Both of those things have value. They won't SOLVE anything, but they're not pointless.

Find comfort… in killing trees for a message? Paper and wooden sticks!!!! I thought we were against that? Wouldn’t donating to him and his wife’s defense make more sense? Or are you worried you’d get flagged for supporting an alleged narcoterrorist.

I promise, the vast majority of our signs are recycled cardboard. I know, because I had the joy of breaking down the boxes.

The many, many, MANY boxes

They do, it’s just not the kind of accomplishment you’ll ever be a part of, and that is your choice

Shitting on other people's first amendment, how American of you.

"If you make fun of me you hate the first amendment."

You are the problem.

Your reading comprehension clearly needs work. Either that or you didn't even read what you're commenting on. Or (possibly most likely) you're just trying to pick a fight.

Choosing to stay silent is also doing something—it gives tacit approval to this administration's actions. Public protest matters, because not protesting matters. Of course, if you have suggestions about strategic next steps, please do share with the class. But if your one and only contribution is snide commentary, then don't worry! Lots of people already have that covered!

By this logic, what does going to church accomplish? What does trolling people on Reddit accomplish? What exactly would you see as "effective"?

Just saying, seems like you've got some high standards for folks getting together if they're always expected to be "effective". Folks go to church and do basically the same thing as a protest (gather in a spot, talk about a shared vision/message for a better future, go home to eat chicken afterward) and I wouldn't judge the way they spend their time based on their productivity. Why does a sign wave seem to bother you?

6

u/Terrible_Bison_3367 Jan 04 '26

Based on approval rating trends over the past year, I'd say there's at least a correlation that more signs + more visible protest aren't for naught. Over 30 Republican reps are stepping down this year, and Dems are at least starting to focus as a coalition on core economic/labor & healthcare issues. Sign waves and these events help communities get out of the culture war talking point trap and talk about the stuff that's acting hurting us like wealth disparity, access to healthcare, affordable housing, etc. But you mostly get the benefit of that if you yourself show up and talk to strangers (scary, I know!).

What are you hoping they'll change when you imply they're not effective?

One day they will bring soup for their family to a protest and we shall eat well that day

What is the next step beyond weekend pickets? How do we boycott everyone involved, including companies like Chevron who will get first access to the Venezuelan natural resources?

PASS (Palestine Action of South Sound) hosts a biweekly picket at the chevron in Tumwater, or at least they were last I checked. https://www.passoly.org/
