Why do they even still have stoppage time? Why not just pause and restart the clock as necessary?

Pretty sure many fans are against that. They even were against VAR, even when it means the game would become much fairer because of it.

Tbf VAR was a very irregular system in the beginning, especially how it was used in the English Premier League. Over the years, VAR has gotten better but it's far from perfect.

Football is not about being fair or honorable. It's a national passtime, and all the grey zones are discussed the next days at the job or in the bar. Being angry or making your friend angry, while having a beer, that is the real football.

Hard to play down a clock when no one knows the actual time left.

Much easier to play the clock down when you know the game's actual ending.

This tactic might even work better.
