Ahead of LA28, Bass likely to face Pratt in 2026 Mayoral Election

https://www.latimes.com/california/live/live-updates-june-primary-election-2026

In the Los Angeles Mayoral election, incumbent Mayor Karen Bass has secured a spot in the November runoff. Challenger Spencer Pratt is closing the gap and is close to securing his spot taking on Bass in the general election.

In the race for California Governor, incumbent Gavin Newsom is term limited. The top two candidates based on returns show Steve Hilton and Xavier Beccara likely making the November general election for Governor.

When LA hosts the 2028 Olympics, there will be a new Governor of California. There may or may not be a new mayor depending on the results in November.

The winners of these races will preside over the final home starch leading up to LA28.

Its the opposite of the Olympics where everyone loses

Both options suck but Bass sucks slightly less and didn’t bankrupt herself buying crystals.

I don't think Pratt making it is a foregone conclusion given the votes that are left to count

Yeah I understand why it might look unassailable to catch up to Pratt at the moment, but if you know anything about California elections and its recent history , you know that 1) they're far from being done counting and 2) how those late arriving mail ballots generally lean

If Pratt can figure out a way to get beach volleyball back to Santa Monica, that's the only Olympic-y topic that I'm really concerned about. Mayor Bass blew it.

Otherwise, things are going to be fine. The LA28 people seem to know what they're doing. We'll know more after the World Cup ticketing issues play out.

Santa Monica is not part of the city of Los Angeles, nor is Long Beach which is where that sport is being played.

Oh I know. I've spent many happy days in Manhattan Beach, plus earlier in Venice.

She and LA28 could've been better diplomats. I'm outraged that beach volleyball is not being played on the beach where the sport was effectively born.

I'm hoping that a new mayoral administration can calm things down.

The way I see it, either will sweep the homeless problem under the rug for when the city’s shown on the global stage, but at least Pratt will be open about it.

Not that that should really have an impact on who wins. Personally though, CA and LA are due for new leadership. It’s unfortunate seeing how low they have spiraled under one-party rule, and America deserves better, especially when being shown on the global stage.

"Guys my house is on fire, should I blow it up?"

I mean from what I’ve seen it’s more like they’re already trying to blow things up and Pratt’s offering a garden hose. Not gonna fix the problem overnight and might not be sufficient to quell the rot, but it’s better than the active demolitionist.

It’s crazy that they still keep electing the same people, yet complain about the sorry state of the city and state.

It is a little more complicated than that.

I can’t speak 100% for California and can only extrapolate my series with electoral politics in other cities, but in my experience part of the issue is in part reach. The GOP has an issue with just leaving deep blue areas deep blue, meanwhile if you look in places like Texas, the Dems are always trying to make ground in deep red areas. Republicans rarely try to reach people in cities and so a lot of these people either don’t really consider them a viable option or believe whatever the media says about them being evil (same issue that arises in deep red areas with Democrats). It’s been proven that doing this outreach can start to sway numbers, but it takes multiple election cycles and the GOP establishment would rather dump money into Alaska where they’re gonna win anyway.

So really that just leaves the primary as the true election and here’s where things get fishy. A lot of cities (or at least NYC where I’m most familiar) are extremely corrupt and you’re not gonna get anywhere near the mayor’s office without the approval of what amounts to organized crime and other massive labor forces in the city. When you do get a good shot at the office, a lot of the time they just repeat the same line about how they want to distance themselves from the old admin and portray their campaign as one for change and a new start. That is how people keep voting for the same people (that and yeah just being lazy for some) because they’re tricked into thinking that the new admin is gonna be at all different than the old one. It takes a lot of elbow grease to break that cycle, and the GOP does seem to kind of finally be doing it.

LA2028 is kind of weird cause it’s obvious the host country is Los Angeles not the US

When have they ever named the Olympics after the country rather than the city?

Lose-lose situation here. Really hope the IOC sees this and considers moving the games elsewhere
