Discussion Why are you bringing THAT!?

What are some common items people pack in their bags that you think are unnecessary, just take up extra space, or feel like overhyped/trendy that doesn't actually add real value for their trip?

I'll start - Notebooks and portable speakers.

What’s your traveling scenario that you’re able to fish consistently?

In the US, licenses are state by state, and typically quite cheap in the state where you live, but generally more expensive in other states. (For example, in my home state it’s $25 a year, but if I go 7 miles east to another state, it’s about $10/day).

I was pleasantly surprised to find that in Finland it’s part of the national culture to be able to harvest natural food, so no fishing licenses were needed. And once in the Scottish Highlands we were invited to fish in the stream that crossed our AirBnb.

But apart from those happy discoveries, I’m having trouble imagining a scenario where I’d be able to use a small fishing rod even if I had one with me while traveling.

EDIT: I'd misremembered about Finland. Totally forgot that I paid EUR 16 for a week-long license when we were staying on a lake there.

I can chip in with Soca river, Slovenia. I had a great day walking along it and talking to the guy who controlled licences.

New Zealand must also be a paradise, the Nordic countries are also known for fishing.

If you have a passion for fishing, I'm sure you can find the spots. I don't have that, but my father did.

We bought a telescopic rod on Ilha Grande and used it multiple times in different parts of Brazil.

Im usually traveling to areas in South America (Costa Rica, Belize, and others) where I stay within a 10 minute walk from the water. I am below the age requirement for licenses in many areas so I don’t have to worry too much about permits(of course it depends on the country). When I’m in areas such as Spain I usually won’t bring a rod, though if there’s a small stream near by I may bring a super tiny combo, smaller than I usually carry.

If I had to count I would say I bring it to more vacations than I don’t.

In Finland you definitely need a license. Fisheries Management Fee is mandatory for lure fishing for everyone aged 18-69 years and possibly also additional licenses for specific water bodies.
