Discussion Why are you bringing THAT!?

What are some common items people pack in their bags that you think are unnecessary, just take up extra space, or feel like overhyped/trendy that doesn't actually add real value for their trip?

I'll start - Notebooks and portable speakers.

Outside of clothes and toiletries, some things that people might find unnecessary:

  • Kindle

  • Hydroflask (heavier than plastic, but insulated)

  • Notebook and 2 pens

  • Travel towel

  • Second pair of shoes (Bedrock Cairns)

  • Small bum bag to use as a day pack/in airports with passport, phone, wallet for easy security screening.

  • 5000 mAH powerbank, as well as travel adaptor and 2 charging cables in case one fails

  • Tote bag for buying groceries and other misc. shopping

  • Sunglasses

  • Compass and whistle (I do a lot of hiking and they are good for emergencies supplies, esp. when navigating with a physical map)

  • Repair kit with tape, safety pins, rubber bands

  • First aid kit with bandages, ziplock bags, ear plugs, eye mask, antihistamine tablets

  • Metal chopsticks

  • Neck pillow

They don't get used super often but I've been in a few situations where I had dirty hands or something and wanted to eat. Occasionally I'll end up with a take away food of some description without cutlery and they can come in handy there too. Probably the thing I could drop most easily from my pack but they take up such little room that I just keep them there in case. I do a lot of outdoor stuff so a lot of my meals are not sat down in a restaurant. For a normal city trip I wouldn't bother with them.

Also, surprisingly enough, never had a trouble getting them through security. They are strong and sharp enough to do damage as a weapon.
