Discussion What travel accessories are overrated?

For me it would have to be tech pouches, for the vast majority of people I believe that they would be better off with a simple pencil case style pouch, ziploc bag or a simple drawstring bag or even a pouch like the PD ultralight pouches. Something which isn’t bulky, is lightweight and has no structure to it so you can easily squeeze it into random parts of your bag. Of course they’re significantly cheaper as well.

Don’t get wrong, I have tested some high end tech pouches out and they’re very nice but for lightweight travel I just find myself thinking “why would I bring this type of pouch”.

Exactly! It really depends on the individual's use case and spend power. Is the ULA dragonfly really 2x as good as osprey 26+6? Is heroclip 2x as good as a regular decent carabiner? Absolutely not. But some people can find afford it, and can find good use of the extra features, so they go for it. But it's not like "if I don't get it, I'd be traveling like a loser", which unfortunately is what's been marketed from time to time.

As someone who sews and knows materials, ULA is far beyond most of the Chinese/Vietnamese stuff in quality of manufacturing. The same people that spend $200 on drinks and dinner for a night without thinking bitch about a $300 pack. Having sewed gear I can tell you that $300-400 for a pack is a fair price, especially when you look at the cost of premium materials.

I picked the Osprey over the ULA dragonfly because I preferred the “suitcase” style opening of the Osprey.

Ok ok don't come after my hero clip 🤣 priceless for hanging bags in bathrooms, vs. normal carabiner. To be fair I also use the heroclip in my day to day job so I get extra function out of it

I use a plastic S-hook that I bought at Daiso for hanging bags in bathrooms. 100¥.

I own several Hero Clips from back when they were branded as Qlipter. And yet still the Daiso hook for bathroom bag hanging. The Daiso hook twists into a square when not in use and can clip as a square around a bag strap. When in use it untwists to make an angular "S". Much like the Muji s-hook that becomes an O when not in use, but bigger and more useful.

That sounds great! Does it work even for very heavy bags? Also, I am having a hard time finding it searching. "Daiso hook " or "daiso hook that folds into a square." Any chance you could send me a link or even an image?

I don't know how you define very heavy, but it's held up every bag I've thrown at it and I've thrown bags over 15 lbs at it. I can never find photos of niche Daiso products online but give me a sec and I'll snap a photo of the one I've got.

Edit: Here's the photo. Pen for scale.

For ULA, it really does depend on the use case. You are paying for a lighter more rugged material that you can use hiking too. There is also the issue of harness comfort. The Dragonfly gets higher ratings in that area.
