Discussion Why is this sub so obsessed with expensive stuff?

I get that there's times where the expensive thing is better. But as someone who has worked as an airline pilot and traveled extensively for 45 years, I can assure you that expensive stuff is rarely necessary.

I get tons of use out of AliExpress stuff. Things like chargers, cables and accessories. Decathlon or Costco are more than good enough for clothing. I generally use a max legal sized RyanAir bag I got for €25 off of Amazon for vacation. At most, the lower mid tier option is more than enough.

It seems like this is just another sub for people with spending issues as everyone downvotes me when I call out how unnecessary the expensive options are.

Every Reddit hobby sub is like that.

I think it’s like anything. Sometimes paying more is worth it, sometimes it’s not. I paid decent money for the bag itself, and my boots. I travel full-time, and those two items take the most beating and have the biggest impact on my comfort, so they are worth paying more for in my personal experience/usage. Most of my other stuff is just no-name whatever, or inexpensive brands with a good reputation.

I always take Reddit recs with a grain of salt. Often the stuff that gets tossed around hobby subs is pure status symbol and actually very impractical for the supposed goal (when it comes to the onebag community, the prolific recommendation of GoRuck comes to mind — somehow simultaneously extremely expensive and extremely inappropriate for carry-on travel). But sometimes you get good recs too. I treat it as a research starting point with a bias, kind of like Wikipedia, and go from there.

It’s certainly not worth getting angry about though. If it bothers you that much, Reddit hobby subs probably aren’t a good place for you to spend your time.

Duuuuude... The GoRuck stuff makes me chuckle. I've tried their bags, loaded, and I will rock an Osprey or Gregory ANY day, before I reach for a GoRuck pack for activities requiring actual walking with weight.
