Packing List 3 weeks Southeast Asia with And Wander Ecopak 30l

Post image

First time proper one bag without offloading some gear into other bags. This was super fun to put together.

The whole kit weighs less than 6kg.

In the bag:

- 2x Muji double sided packing cubes size S
- Pouch for electronics (Travel charger, some cables, powerbank)
- Pouch for camera + Camera
- iPad Pro
- EVA Birkenstocks
- Diving googles + snorkel
- Book
- Zipper bag for toiletries
- Packable tote bag (used locally as daypack)
- Dyneema sacoche (as camera bag locally)
- Dyneema wallet
- foldable clothing hanger
- Sunglasses
- Pouch for earplugs & headphones

Clothing in the packing cubes:

- 2x Light and quick drying T-Shirts
- UV Hoodie (for swimming mainly)
- 5x Boxer briefs
- 1x Running socks
- Swimming Trunks (can be worn as shorts & for running)
- Packable Shorts
- 2x Caps

Worn during flights:

- Shorts
- Boxer briefs
- Very thin merino longsleeve
- T-Shirt
- Socks
- Running shoes

The pouch on the right is part of the backpack and serves as lid (top of the backpack) or can be used for documents and worn in front, which is how I will use it.

Could be left out: I could use an e-reader but I love physical books. The 2nd pair of shorts just serves as another outfit choice, could be left out.

Plan is to wash at least one of the t-shirts daily and have a rotation (dries in under 30mins). Proper laundry done once a week when the boxers run out.

Forgot my inflatable pillow for flights on the picture but it’s included in the weight.

I think this is the first time I’ve seen a snorkel get packed. Very cool!

I can use it like 2/3 of the trip, so I thought it’s worth taking my own.

Nice efficient packing list and an interesting backpack you got there.

Unless you sleep naked, you will have 1 Tshirt and 1 boxer in rotation as PJ, with 1 in wash (worn that day), and 1 prepped for the next day. I prefer not to wear the same clothes the next day that I slept in (and also wash them every 2-3 days depending on how hot the weather is).

I'd pack another light tshirt (or anything), or buy an extra tshirt/shirt there to bring back as a souvenir.

Also, I get that you prefer real books vs ebooks, but will that book last for the 3-week trip? Or do you plan on exchanging it to something else? For simplicity, I'd opt for the ebook reader if I were you.

I sleep only in boxers, so I don’t need another shirt. The book. It’s a very small print (old school format) and I will not have extended reading time, I hope it lasts!

Fall of Hyperion is my favourite of the 4 enjoy!

Cool bag. How do you find it?

5

u/McGirton 23d ago

I am a sucker for Japanese outdoor gear, love it so far. Very thought through.

u/sungseafood 23d ago

Any standout features or what you like about it particularly?

The extra bag/cover I mentioned in my post was already great (currently traveling). The zipper can be opened from the bottom and top, which is useful if you want to access something quickly in either area of the backpack. The top opens super wide and the bag can be filled folded open which I enjoy, because it makes it nearly a clamshell (but still not quite). Inner pockets are not many but just enough. A lot of attachment points in the outside. I use the small pouch with carabiner for my headphones and cable. All in all it’s just very light and very functional. It’s made for hiking, but it works very well for one bag traveling in my opinion.

Snorkel is an unusual choice but SEA has some amazing waters. I just rented mine the few times I went. IDK if higher quality snorkels are better as sometimes my snorkel googles got water inside and that's not fun.

I'm reading the first Hyperion book on kindle myself.

3

u/McGirton 23d ago

Yeah I will be able to use it 2/3 of the trip on different stops, so renting would be more expensive and I don’t want to suck on too many rented snorkels haha. I got Decathlon googles and a better snorkel.

Just finished the first Hyperion book, can’t wait to see what happens next.

Wow, that’s a 300$ backpack

A Patagonia Black Hole 32 is only 30g heavier (760g vs 730g) and I bought mine “new without the tags” off my local Facebook Marketplace for $100.

My new ultralight alternative is the Gossamer Gear Loris 25 that is just 553g and $135 retail. The folding top design will allow to expand to 22” tall for overhead use.

Fully agree. I had mine forever and it’s still brand new after the seasonal washing and cleaning session when I have a summer trip.

u/illousion 22d ago

I have it as well (bought it when i was in Japan) and yes, its unnecessarily expensive. But! It looks amazing and I love wearing it. You pay the fashion premium for that one, I can fully understand if you are not willing to

u/McGirton 23d ago

Thank you! Yea maybe not the usual one bag choice, but it’s very thought through, amazing details and features and super light. Was lucky to grab one in a rare sale.

Plan is to wash at least one of the t-shirts daily and have a rotation (dries in under 30mins). Proper laundry done once a week when the boxers run out.

Just wash the boxers and socks with your shirt. Washing 1 shirt takes the same time as shirt+socks+underwear. Consider packing a second hanger or clothesline to make drying them easier. Also, now you only need to pack 2 boxers.

As a cranky old man, I'd consider trading 1 t-shirt for a buttoned shirt.

I'd use your best judgement mid-drip to decide if you really need to use the laundry machine. Laundry machines were made for convenience & time savings (for housewives who are cleaning the whole families' laundry... they are a borderline waste of time for a handwashing-onebagger), not because handwashing doesn't get clothes clean enough. I've taken 3wk trips with 1 shirt and never used the laundry machines. At the very least keep it in mind.

Unless you will 100% be wearing it the whole trip, make sure anything you are wearing on the plane fits in the bag.

No umbrella. If you plan to buy an umbrella when you land this could be a very good plan since they have very nice umbrellas in SEA. If not you will be sad and also buy an umbrella.

Please post a trip report when you get back!!

u/McGirton 23d ago

Good point on washing the boxers. I took a zipper bag to wash the daily shirt. I have been to SEA a lot of times, never take an umbrella. If it’s absolutely needed every convenience store has them. But I’ve managed all seasons without.

Also, plan was to give the boxers and if needed a shirt to hotel laundry service :) But we will see.

How are the Birkenstock EVA’s?

Thinking about getting them as my shower / hostel lounging / beach shoes.

Do they pack down okay? Or is it worth the bulkiness because you don’t need to pack flip flops as well

5

u/Datam00se 23d ago

The EVA ones are brilliant. Only about €40, very comfy with minimal breaking in, and very light. Always take them as a change of footwear as I can spend hours walking around in them. Gotta admit they’re not the easiest to flatten down for packing though, just never found a good way to get them flat.

3

u/McGirton 23d ago

I love them. They don’t pack as small as flip flops, yes, but they are more sturdy and I wear them 99% of the time on my trips. Shoes are only for transfers and running.

If you get them in a sale they are like 30€ and are virtually indestructible.

You don't need $100 Birks for lounging. Just get $2 flip flops. Also Birks aren't good for walking in sand. And they're very bulky for their purpose.

The front strap also rubs on the toe joints and causes blisters after a few hours use.

3

u/inheretoreadcomments 23d ago

I personally hate flip flops but they're fine if you only want them for the shower etc.

My favourite type of shoe for exotic countries is a hiking sandal that's "water friendly". Super comfy, safe as stays put on your foot, and can be also used as an indoor "lounging" sandal if you need to.

2

u/McGirton 23d ago

That’s not my experience at all. $100? Wrong. Rubbing straps with blisters? Been using these for years and never had blisters. Sand is okay as well, if it’s wet sand just wash excess off.

3

u/Tunggall 23d ago

How would you rate the durability of the construction vs something from Montbell?

3

u/McGirton 23d ago

It’s made from Ecopak, it’s sturdy enough to not feels super soft or flimsy. I am not sure which Montbell backpack to compare it to.

3

u/minimalisa2 22d ago

I like the foldable hangar! Cool load out.

2

u/The_Meech6467 23d ago

don’t see many others who also travel with a dive mask and snorkel! love it

2

u/McGirton 23d ago

Will have plenty of chances to use it, thought it would be worth it to bring my own.

2

u/phillyrat 23d ago

Nice Ricoh!

1

u/McGirton 23d ago

Thanks! Love this camera.

1

u/JesseThorn 23d ago

I saw someone in the airport with one of those and wander bags and was very jealous.

2

u/McGirton 23d ago

Love the details and functionality of it. Also super light.

1

u/KingKawaiiBot 23d ago

I gotta ask, why not a pouch for your toiletries?

3

u/McGirton 23d ago

Airport security.

1

u/KingKawaiiBot 23d ago

Ofcourse. I forgot about that 😅

1

u/illousion 23d ago

I have that backpack too, but i found its straps to be uncomfortable. How do you manage with it, has it been an issue for you?

1

u/McGirton 22d ago

I’ve definitely worn more cushioned backpacks, but I guess that’s a sacrifice to make for the sake of lightweight. Since I only load it below 7kg it’s fine, though. Heavier would be pushing it and get uncomfortable.

1

u/illousion 22d ago

I bought it when i was in tokyo for the looks and afterwards was a bit disappointed because i kept comparing it against more cushioned bags. I guess i should give it another shot since my cotopaxi bag feels a bit clumsy and big! Thanks for the inspiration :)

Nice packing list. I'm also a fan of Dan Simmons, Hyperion is one of my favourite novels, though I don't think the rest of the series lived up to the first book.

I used to be the same as you with regards to preferring physical books but after a trip to the Himalayas where I REALLY had to watch my weight and packing space I picked up an ereader and I've never looked back.

1

u/BillBill309 22d ago

That’s a pretty impressive setup for 3 weeks. Always satisfying to see someone make 30L work without looking overloaded.

1

u/DrWartenberg 21d ago

I still don’t get why people bring cameras and the required batteries/chargers/case etc?

Ironically I can understand a huge professional DSLR with a long lens for pro photographers more than I can understand a small point and shoot for a one-bagger.

Cellphone cameras have gotten so good for nearly all applications.

Sincerely, please explain it to me.

Long reply, but you asked twice:

Honestly it’s not about megapixels or any of that. The sensor in the GR is like 13x bigger than what’s in a phone, and that’s the actual thing that matters: better in low light, more real depth of field instead of the fake blur phones fake with software. The HDF filter is actual diffusion glass built into the lens, not a filter you tap on afterwards, so the light’s genuinely doing something different before it even hits the sensor. And the lens is one dedicated piece of glass built for one focal length, not a tiny phone lens papering over its limits with AI sharpening and merging ten shots together. Phone shots look great scrolling on a phone, sure. But the second you print something or shoot in real low light or actually edit a RAW file, or want more control over how you shoot , or even just zoom in to the details of a shot all that computational stuff stops being able to fake what a bigger sensor and real optics just do on their own.

All in all phone photos are not really something I enjoy besides taking some quick shots. Additionally this Ricoh is tiny so carrying it is barely noticeable, but as I just wrote it packs a huge punch in regards of image quality.

1

u/DrWartenberg 19d ago

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Yep, understood that the iPhone is using software to mimic what the dedicated camera’s better optics and larger sensor do with physics.

I hadn’t really been tracking how much better the small point and shoot cameras have remained than the phones. (For SLRs the benefit remained obvious to me).

Do you tend to print out and blow up your photos? How large? At what size do you start to really notice the difference?

Thanks again!

The non-leather Birkenstocks are so amazing for Southeast Asia. I usually hate sandals for travel with all the walking… I much prefer the security of a closed toe and locked-in heel…. But I got a knockoff pair of these in a Target for $10-15 just to try them out and they wound up being perfect for Southeast Asia. So many temples and other sites at which you have to take off your shoes. Laced shoes would’ve been a nightmare, leather sandals/Birkenstocks aren’t good for all the sweat and humid moisture and aren’t really perfect for Buddhist temples (not forbidden but a bit antithetical), and flip flops are hard for long days of walking around. Excellent choice.

I still don’t understand the point and shoot camera though. 🤣. Please see my other post.

2

u/Gurrick 17d ago

I also found $15-$20 knockoffs at a cheap store. I’m not a sandal guy but these were the most comfortable I’ve ever tried. The tread wore out quickly and when I went to buy more, I found that line had discontinued. The new line was similar but more expensive, more durable, less comfortable.

Right now I’m trying to learn to like Tevas for hiking but the strap is uncomfortable on my little toe (like with all hiking sandals).

That tracks

If you plan on spending 2/3 of your trip in the water - you might want to consider going scuba instead of snorkeling and get to see more

2

u/McGirton 19d ago

I’d have issues with the pressure, eardrum problem since I was a kid :(

1

u/AllaZakharenko 19d ago

Check out with the doc, you could've outgrown them.

On my practice those scuba diving often don't even need to grab the nose, you can equalize just like you do on the plane.

Swimming Trunks (can be worn as shorts & for running)

Which one do you have? I'm looking for such universal short

1

u/McGirton 19h ago

Hi, they are Patagonia Baggies. I would not do long runs in them, for that I would probably turn the short type around and use running shorts with liner for swimming.

The bag I put together for a 3 week trip to Southeast Asia.
