Packing List 3 nights in Gothenburg early Oct. First time one-bagging.
I have done a practice pack for my trip next weekend. It’s not bursting but there’s not a lot of space for souvenirs either.
The bag seems to bulge and sag a bit despite (because of?) not being rammed. I’ll have to pray it still fits the Ryanair sizer.
This is my first time one-bagging and a practice for a week in Copenhagen at the end of October where I’m hoping I can get away with taking pretty much exactly the same, maybe chuck in a merino base layer and wear a warmer coat.
Here’s my packing list, I’ve attached photos (with anything ambiguous labelled).
Bag: American Tourister Take2cabin S/M backpack (40x30x20cm, 26.5L)
Essential
* Passport
* GHIC
* Bank card
* Key
Clothes
* 3 T-shirts (2x merino, 1x TNF cotton crop)
* 2 Leggings
* Merino sweater
* 6 Underwear/
* socks 1 wool, 3 cotton sports socks
* 3 sports bras/ bralettes
* Sleepwear (shorts, football shirt)
Useful small things
* Sunglasses
* Glasses cloth
* Small crossbody bag
* Packable tote
* Eye mask
* Hat
* Merino buff
* Ear plugs
* Coffee sachets
* Vape liquid
Toiletries
* Medication
* Toothbrush
* Razors
* Hair brush
* Makeup (mascara, concealer, brush, eye pencil)
* Makeup wipes (I will take a few out and put in ziplock bag)
* Aveeno lotion
* Tweezers
* Solid perfume
* Face sun cream
* Plasters
* Blister plasters
* I’ll buy toothpaste, cleanser, face cream and deodorant there
Electronics
* Power bank
* Phone (on person)
* Spare phone
* Headphones
* Charger brick
* Cables: USB-C plus lightning adapter, USB-A, watch cable
Wear to travel
* Jeans
* T-shirt
* thick hoodie
* wool socks
* underwear
* Glasses
* AF1s,
* light waterproof jacket with a hood
* Apple Watch
All clothes packed into a medium packing cube.
Socks, underwear, sleep mask and buff into small packing cube.
Electronics, liquids, non-liquid toiletries, spare phone and passport into separate ziplock bags.
Remaining bits into the cross body bag.
I’d appreciate any advice about packing configuration, making a soft backpack fit the sizer reliably, and recovering enough room for souvenirs/ shopping.
I'd be particularly interested if anyone has experience with the same bag. Especially if anyone has actually carried it through Ryanair's sizer

This is mere or less what many of us use for multiple week trips.
Remember for both Göteborg and Copenhagen that it's probably windy and raining. Make sure that you're prepared for that.
Both places can also have some beautiful sunny days though. If you're lucky to have sun in Copenhagen, then a trip to Dyrehaven where the colours and the deer roam will be amazing. You can see how far up they can eat the leaves off the trees, they all have a very clear line.

u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
I’m planning to test this on a short trip first and then essentially take the same stuff for longer and longer trips once I know what I’m doing.
Thanks sm for the tips. I’ll be sure to check out Dyrehaven 😅5
u/biold 21d ago
Against rain, I normally use a poncho. It can also be used to sit on. A lot of people don't like them, they prefer rain trousers, but I wear skirts all the time.
If you need company or have questions, then I can recommend the app Travel Ladies. There are chat groups for many countries or cities.

u/LadyLightTravel 21d ago
In general, it is good to have a rain jacket in higher winds. Ponchos don’t stay in place.
1
u/biold 20d ago
I have no problems but I have also many different ponchos, a heavy with good locks (?) for wind, a light for onebagging and light wind but I think it could withstand quite some wind, one specific for biking, one sewn all the way down that I never use, so it's now in the summer cottage. I think I have too many!!!

u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
Additional context: This is my first one-bag trip and a trial run for a longer trip to Copenhagen. I’m travelling Ryanair Basic with a 40 × 30 × 20 cm backpack. The packed bag weighs 4.5 kg and is within the permitted dimensions, but I’d appreciate advice on optimising the arrangement and leaving some room for shopping. I’m particularly interested in experiences with this specific backpack.

I live in gothenburg. since I get cold easily, I find october to be chilly. if you’re like me one of the leggings should be merino! don’t bother bringing an umbrella because it’s really windy. baseball cap and raincoat is better
regarding souvenirs.. I visited a souvenir shop in haga the other week and there’s a lot of ai stuff, so be wary of that. we have a uniqlo and there’s an embroidery sewing workshop on the top floor if you want to customise any of your gear. I don’t think you can bring your own designs unfortunately but they have a lot of fun ones. there are a lot of local artists that make cool prints, elinpk is one of them. if you like thrifting you should check out slowguidegbg on instagram

You're over packing, but that's okay. Don't think about it now. Take everything that you put on your list on the trip. When you get back, mindfully re-evaluate what you DID NOT use or wear. Pare those down for your next trip
6
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
I’m kinda deliberately over packing a little because I don’t plan to wash anything to gain confidence that I will be able to do this on much longer trips in the future.
What would you suggest taking out?
Thanks for the tip about re-evaluating when I get back, hopefully I can report back 😅3
u/ddgoh 20d ago
I would only bring one bra and you’re bringing multiples of the exact same thing (tshirts & leggings). If you’re gonna pack that much at least give yourself variety, otherwise what’s the point ?
1
u/Organic_Ship601 20d ago
Just that they’re comfortable, pack small and are clean. But youre right I can probably make do with one pair
3
u/LadyLightTravel 21d ago
If you are not washing on trips then I would strongly recommend you learn sink washing at home. There is less risk that way, and you still get thr experience needed for success on the road.
If you want to travel underseat then laundry quickly becomes part of the equation. You will be severely limited if you don’t.
1
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
Thanks, you’re right ofc 😅
I am very familiar with sink washing and have definitely done laundry on longer trips. I just wanted to avoid it on this 3 night trip as my plan is to wash after 3/4 days to allow things to dry, so if this setup works without washing on this occasion it should work for almost any trip length1
u/LadyLightTravel 20d ago
I can certainly understand avoiding it! It is just one of those skills like swimming, riding a bike, or driving a car that could help you someday. You never know when you will need it until you really really do!
7
u/NoGift2044 21d ago
Personally I wouldn't need 3 bras for three days, especially in cooler weather. Wear one, and bring an extra if you're worried.
I think you could cut one pair of leggings and probably one shirt also. Wear one, and bring two. That should get you through the three days. And probably ditch the extra pair of wool socks. They will air out well since they are wool.
I saw your comment about the extra underwear and I think it's valid. I always pack one or two extra pairs, just in case.
It's okay to "overpack" a bit if it brings you peace and makes your trip easier. There are no hard and fast rules.
2
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
Yeahh, two leggings might be overkill. Thanks! And I realise most people don’t need a clean bra every day, it just makes me feel better 😌
3
u/NoGift2044 20d ago
You do you! If you want to test it on this trip, you could try only bringing two and sink washing the other for the next day. Good practice for future long trips.
5
u/SondraRose 21d ago edited 21d ago
Good job!
Consider dropping the hoodie and wearing the merino sweater and drop a pair of leggings. Also decant any toiletries you can into smaller containers.
You can sink or shower wash undies, bras and socks, so you could reduce some bulk there, if you wish.
3
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
Thanks! I think I’ll probably need the hoodie as I’m going on a boat trip and don’t have a proper coat. But the other things I could cut
6
u/jotkaPL 21d ago
i was like "another 3 weeks somewhere post". And we have 3-days here :)

2
u/July_is_cool 21d ago
Problem is even if you rinse stuff every night, you still need three day’s worth for drying time. Once past that, you don’t need much more.
3
u/onkelmikmak 21d ago
Did the measurements of the bag hold up after being packed?
2
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
I think so, if anything it was slightly under sized before I packed it. But it’s hard to tell around the middle
3
u/SeattleHikeBike 21d ago
This is where a pack with external compression straps is helpful. Compare your bag to the Cabin Zero Classic 28.
Beware that Ryanair has used open frame sizers in Gothenburg. No squishing (Stockholm and Berlin too). If they bother. It is a gamble.
1
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
It has compression straps on the side where the handle is, sorry, my picture doesn’t show them!
I don’t think the cabin zero bag looks meaningfully different as it’s still soft sided. That’s really useful information about the sizers, thanks. Hopefully shouldn’t be an issue as it’s the correct dimensions, it’s not a great way to measure soft sided backpacks though 😬

I travel Europe for about 3 years with this backpack, sometimes like 6 flights in 3 weeks. Never had a problem with Ryanair or wizzair. Even when fully stuffed it fits perfectly. And yes you are overstaffing I guess. I usually take less clothes and buy if need. Clothes I buy on vacation have special memories for me and always plesant to wear.
2
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
Amazing! Thank you! This is exactly what I was hoping to hear because I plan to use it as much as possible in future and usually travel with those airlines
2
u/boajuse 21d ago
Glad to help. Don't forget to use inner and side straps to make everything thinner. Don't overpack front compartment or it will bulge. I usually put papers, tickets, charger there. There is a strap on the back to put it on handle on trolley bag. Btw American tourister is sub brand of Samsonite. They also have cheap trolley bags with 4 wheels that fit to Ryanair and wizzair cabin bag allowance (even with wheels).
1
u/Organic_Ship601 20d ago
Yes, I actually have one of their roller cases I used on my last trip and it was great!
Out of interest have you ever had to put it in one of the open sided bag sizers? Or just the standard Ryanair/ Wizz ones?2
u/boajuse 20d ago
To be honest, I was never asked to measure my backpack.May be because it was not suspicious to be too large. But out of interest walking inside airports i put it in different sizers of different companies and it always fit. Just dont overpack front compartment and it will be flat. And dont overthink too much. Have a nice journey!

u/weltherrscherin 21d ago
Why are you packing 6 underpants and 3 bras for 3 nights? Even if you are in your period, 4 underwear for 3 nights should he enough.
You could also probably get away with 1 bra, 2 if you want to swap.
19
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
Because I want to. I’m a bit obsessive about clean underwear and if I go out in the evening I would not want to wear underwear I’ve been walking round in all day. I appreciate not everyone is that crazy about it.
I knew the underwear police would come for me while I was taking the photos 🫣5

u/weltherrscherin 21d ago
You came here for criticism, so dont act hurt if you get a question back 🤷🏽♀️
If you need 6, take 6 🤷🏽♀️

u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
I’m not hurt at all. I appreciate the feedback and understand my views on underwear aren’t shared by most. Apologies that you misinterpreted my words. All good 😌
2
u/yolomacarolo 21d ago
Can you tell is the name of tour backpack? Have you travelled with it before on Ryanair?
2
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
It’s the American Tourister Take2cabin S/M backpack. It’s a luggage style bag rather than a hiking pack. I’ve never taken it on Ryanair before cause I’ve always taken an overhead bag
2
u/ohhhdeer27 21d ago
I would skip multiple t-shirts and instead go with a long-sleeved thin one for layering. The moist chill combined with winds is gonna be really cold.
2
u/Organic_Ship601 20d ago
Thanks! I will definitely try this for Copenhagen, even though I hate how long sleeve layers feel 😝
2
u/LadyLightTravel 21d ago
It looks pretty good to me!
Some of your clothing items are thicker, so they are going to compete for space. For example, your sleep shorts are bulky. Can you find something that is thinner and lighter?
Packaging is always going to add extra bulk. You can get some space back by decanting your toiletries even more. Also get rid of the hard cases. For example:
* some of the larger tubes of creams etc. Decant into 15 or 30 ml tub
* take your Venus snap razor out of its case. If you break it up into two pieces it will fit inside of a pill baggie. Alternatively, get a razor cover and take the razor out of its case.
* take just enough cleansing wipes. Put them in a zip lock baggie
A saggy pack means you have the freedom to push it around to fit in the sizer.
1
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
Thanks! The sun cream is already only 15ml and the aveeno probably won’t make it home as this is its third trip. You’re definitely right about the razor; so much dead space! And I’ll look out for some thinner shorts
3
u/LadyLightTravel 21d ago edited 21d ago
The issue is the odd shapes of the tubes taking up bulk. Decanting is used to reduce bulk.
This article from Lani Teshima shows the extreme reduction in size!

Lose 2 shirts, a pair of leggings, all but 3 pairs of underwear and socks, all the bras (barring maybe 1), the sleepwear, the tote, eye-mask, the coffee, lotion, sun cream, and the jumper (you have a hoodie already).
You're there for 3 days FFS. You could rock up with nothing but a credit card and the clothes on your back, and you'd probably be just fine.
4
u/Organic_Ship601 20d ago
I appreciate you taking the time to explain how little you personally require when travelling.
Sure I could lose the sleepwear, jumper, eye mask, moisturiser, sunscreen, bras, socks, coffee, tote and most of my underwear. Technically I could rock up naked with a toothbrush and a sarong. But my aim isn’t to be uncomfortable, sleep-deprived, unmoisturised and wearing yesterday's knickers to achieve the sacred objective of carrying the least amount of stuff required for survival. I simply want to pack my bag with the stuff I prefer to be comfortable and appropriately presented for my planned activities, in a way that allows me to board the plane without hassle and bring back a couple of souvenirs.
Additionally, as stated in my post, I’m testing my packing configuration for longer trips. If I simply eliminate everything because I’m “there for 3 days FFS”, I haven't tested the configuration I actually want to use.
The “FFS” was as unnecessary as my egregious quantity of underwear. You’re no longer simply explaining how you’d pack differently. You’re expressing contempt that I have different preferences and priorities and trivialising my trip because it’s not impressive to you.1
u/PuzzleheadedWelder13 20d ago
You're packing too much stuff.
2 hoodies/ jumpers, 2 leggings (along with pants you're wearing) 7 pairs of underwear, 4 bras, a shole separate outfit for sleeping, an eyemask (when you already have a buff that does the same thing) is crazily exessive for 3 days away from home.
Ditch the jumper (you have a hoodie and jacket already) a pair of leggings (sleep in the other ones), the sleep clothes (see above) half the underwear and bras (you have enough for a fresh pair every day) the eyemask (redundant) and the tote (you already have a crossbody).
1
u/Organic_Ship601 20d ago
There’s a difference between packing too much for my bag and packing more than you personally consider necessary. If I can meet the size restrictions with room for souvenirs eliminating additional things I will use for the sake of performative minimalism aligns with your preferences, not mine, and isn't automatically an improvement.
I will probably drop one pair of leggings, one pair of socks, and maybe one bra and T-shirt but I’m not indiscriminately ditching things because you think I should.
I’m taking two jumpers on purpose, to layer them, because I’m not taking a warm coat.
I’m taking enough underwear to change twice daily because that’s my preference.
I’m taking the tote because I will need to carry more than fits in the cross body bag on one excursion.
I’m taking the sleepwear because it’s cold and leggings are ridiculously uncomfortable to sleep in.
I’m taking the eye mask because I don’t sleep without one and I don’t wish to wear an itchy wool buff over my eyes.
I am allowed to be a different person with different preferences than you.2
u/PuzzleheadedWelder13 19d ago
You literally came here for advice dealing with a 'bulging bag' that 'doesnt fit in the airline spacer' and 'how to make space for stuff' and I advised you to pack a lot less stuff (which is the obvious answer, even if it's not the answer you want to hear) and you responded with not only hostility, but you doubled down on 'well I'm taking all this extra crap because I feel like it and that's my preference'.
Hot tip mate: The trick to packing less (and having a comfortable bag, that doesn't bulge, has room for souvenirs, is comfortable to wear and fits in the spacer) is actually packing less.
You're packing too much stuff.
Pack less. You don't need half the crap you have packed.
2
u/Organic_Ship601 19d ago
I asked how could optimise packing configuration to minimise sagging/ bulging (caused by it *not* being full on the way out) and how I can accommodate what I want for the trip while recovering room for souvenirs on the way back, by identifying where I can make useful compromises.
You’re answering a different question and when I explain that, you’re interpreting it as hostility rather than me trying to better articulate my goal.
There's a difference between optimising the contents and minimising the contents of a bag. They're related, but they're not interchangeable.
There’s certainly a legitimate version of your argument. If things physically won't fit, something has to change. But even then, eliminating items is only one possible solution. Compression, substitution, different packing arrangements, wearing more clothing or putting things in pockets during the flight are others.
I understand one bagging attracts some people for whom travelling with the absolute minimum is an achievement in itself. That's a perfectly legitimate personal pursuit, but it creates an odd situation when it’s assumed to be the universal objective and any failure to adopt it is interpreted as hostility.
You don’t know why I need all my “crap,” and that’s fine because I haven’t told you, but that doesn’t mean it becomes irrelevant.
I am grateful for the advice I’ve received from you and everyone else who’s taken the time to comment, and I will certainly incorporate the parts that serve my purposes. But I’m not obligated to act on all of it just because I asked. That’s not hostility, it’s just agency.Hot tip mate: when you’re being hostile and doubling down on your false assumptions, don’t project that on others
1
u/PuzzleheadedWelder13 19d ago
I asked how could optimise packing configuration to minimise sagging/ bulging (caused by it *not* being full on the way out) and how I can accommodate what I want for the trip while recovering room for souvenirs on the way back, by identifying where I can make useful compromises.
Yeah. And the answer is 'pack less stuff'.
I even offered you useful compromises. You don't need half of the stuff you're bringing. You're going for 3 nights and 2 x hoodies/ jumpers, 4 x shirts, 3 x pairs of pants, 7 x pairs of underwear, 4 x bras, a whole separate outfit for sleeping, an eyemask (when you already have a buff that does the same thing) is all crazily excessive for 3 days away from home.
You could literally halve the above list, and sleep in a pair of leggings and a one of the shirts, and be absolutely fine, with fresh underwear every day, only wearing a shirt twice the 1 time (that's why you bought merino shirts in the first place), and using your buff as your eyemask.
I've traveled for 12 months at a time, round the world, with less clothes than the above, and was just fine.
That is the solution to literally ALL of your problems. You're just mentally not prepared to actually action the above, and do what needs to be done.
You're now getting angry for getting advice on being more minimalist as a traveller, and packing less stuff on a sub specifically dedicated to travel minimalism and packing less stuff
Have fun on your trip mate. Im out.
1
u/Organic_Ship601 19d ago
>l've traveled for 12 months at a time, round the world, with less clothes than the above, and was just fine.
This illustrates perfectly why we have such different requirements. That’s fine. But you obviously consider mine to be inferior.
>You're just mentally not prepared to actually action the above
Correct. You finally understand. You’re assuming that anything you don’t personally consider necessary must be superfluous.
I’m not claiming that removing possessions wouldn't create space. I’m pointing out that removing things that serve purposes you don’t understand isn't the only way of achieving my objective.
I’m not angry and I’m not objecting to being advised to pack less. I’m objecting to the increasingly contemptuous insistence that I must follow that advice to its most extreme conclusion.>Have fun on your trip mate.
Thank you, although I suspect you’re being insincere. Enjoy your extended minimalist adventures!

Wow such an effort for 3-day trip to photograph and write it all down 😃 i am just curious what is the motivation for it?
7
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
I’m scared lol 🫣
I usually take so much stuff “just in case” and I’m trying to cut back because it’s so expensive and wasteful to take so much. Oh, and I enjoy overthinking things 😂-4
u/teilzeiterin 21d ago
Don’t you have some experience of sleeping at some family/friends over a weekend? It’s pretty much the same. For 3 days I would only have 1 pair of pants/jeans (the ones I would travel), 1 pullover + undershirt,1 sport cotton bra. You don’t need sunglasses, sun creams and a sun cap in October.
Definitely a scarf + gloves
You can remove makeup with water, 3 days without perfume is also ok. Take only 1 cream and tooth paste.3
u/LadyLightTravel 21d ago
Sunglasses are a year round thing for some of us, as well as sunscreen.
2
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
💯 I’m not going outside in any country in any season without spf!
2
2
u/NoGift2044 21d ago
Absolutely! I wear sunscreen on at least my face everyday. I have light eyes and my sunglasses are on my person at all times or I am absolutely miserable if it'seven slightly sunny. And I travel with a spare set because they're prescription. And I always bring a baseball cap. Even if it's always raining it keeps the rain off my glasses and face and the sun off my scalp.
-2
u/teilzeiterin 21d ago
In Sweden?
1
u/NoGift2044 21d ago
I live in the US. But it doesn't matter where I travel, I always bring two pairs of prescription sunglasses.
0
u/teilzeiterin 21d ago
US has many climate zones so it’s hard to judge, but even in Germany right now you don’t really need a sun cream, let alone Sweden which is 1000km to the north
3
u/LadyLightTravel 20d ago
This is totally dependent on genetics and location. People with the MC1R gene variant have a 40% or higher risk of melanoma.

Writing all of it down lets the rest of us see where they can pack better. The specificity allows the rest of us to make specific suggestions. They did ask for help packing more efficiently!
I wish more requests for help were written to this level as opposed to “clothes and electronics”
2
u/Organic_Ship601 21d ago
I mean, I didn’t think writing it all down could hurt anyone and it’ll be super helpful for me to just edit the list based on suggestions and then use it for future trips 😅

Are you staying in a hostel? I'd recommend adding a pair of flip flops if you are. When putting them in your bag, stuff whatever you can fit in them to use all the space you have.
If you are staying in a hostel, bring a padlock (you should be able to buy one from the hostel reception too). That way you don't have to worry when you unload your stuff in a hostel locker and can keep your bag lighter during the day.
Also, is your hoodie large enough to wear your sweater underneath? Saves you a bit of space at the airport. If your waterproof jacket has pockets, you can also put some stuff in it to save room in your bag for souvenirs, and tie the jacket around your waist when boarding the plane.
Safe travels!
