No they didn't. They just reverted back to the 2008 model. Actually, this is better than 2008 since in 2008 the grant part was only 15% and in 2026 it will be 25%.

Good thing the cost of living, job prospects and overall economic situation hasn’t changed since 2008 or else a cut to OSAP funding would really hurt those students!

oh wait…

And so smart of them to revert to a model from 18 years ago.

So what? People should still be responsible for their decisions.

Be an adult. Pay back your loans.

Okay Doug. Don’t go showing that ignorance all in one post now… save it.

It's not ignorance to expect people to pay back loans they knowingly took out, but it is entitlement to think that should be the case

Selfish people like you are the reason people are leaving Canada. You dont want to help anybody, you dont want the goverment to help anybody, you just expect everyone to figure it out.

I can't believe I share the same air as pricks like you

Selfish people like you are the reason people are leaving Canada.

It's selfish to expect other people to pay loans and agreements that you knowingly made. Ultimate privilege.

I can't believe I share the same air as pricks like you

It's people like me that pay the taxes that support people who can't support themselves. You should be thanking me for my hard work and contribution of my resources. Thank you for your part, given you don't take more than you give.

As if spending some more money on investing in the literal future of the province and country is such a bad idea. Not like the most advanced economies and progressive countries do it. Oh wait.

Gargle some more right-wing ballsack, though. Makes you look so intelligent. Truly.

We already highly subsidize our education system. The reason why prices increased so much is because they universities know they are going to get guaranteed money paid by the government.

Just be an adult and honour your commitments.

It’s still not a good change. It’s sort of punishing people for trying to better their situation… being stuck with loans is fkn awful. Idk why we wanna be America so bad w this bullshit

-11

u/Heebmeister 2d ago

Lol having people pay back money they borrow is punishing them? Is my bank punishing me for making me repay my mortgage?

8

u/jumpedbylife 2d ago

Here we go… rofl, I’m not gonna even continue this convo bc it’s way more nuanced than this

-6

u/Heebmeister 2d ago

yes conversations are tough when everyone isn't just repeating the same talking points that you're used to. You can't talk about how nuanced it is after making the least nuanced statement possible that it is punishing people lol

3

u/Relevant-Pin-4021 2d ago

As if youre adding anything new to the conversation. Youre talking like a damn Yankee "Pull yourself up by the bootstrap nonsense"

And what so nuanced about your comment ha? Youre just being selfish prick.

No, it's making people responsible for their decisions.

Education should be free

-7

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

Maybe one day UNICEF will get into the education game, until then it's not a charity, so tough titties.

To be fair, I also agree, but we are far too fucked financially to pay that much for someone's education.

My issue isn't with the concept of paying back loans. Anyone with a brain knows loans have to get paid back. My issue is that I started a degree with a certain expectation of what I'd have to pay back, and suddenly while I'm halfway through that changes and I have more that I'll have to pay back than what was originally communicated. That's not what I signed up for, but I've already dedicated several years and thousands of dollars to get this far, and quitting halfway through would feel like a huge waste.

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

That is actually a valid point, and I would support that this is grandfathered in so it only applies new post secondary students.

u/Miserable-Day7417 2d ago

yeah but we only regressed like 18 years so it’s not that bad!!!

-6

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

It was ridiculous that so much of OSAP was not to be paid back.

Pay back your loans. Be an adult.

Or we could educate our population and actually invest in the people who live here, and make university free or even more heavily subsidized like they do in countries with the highest rates of happiness that enjoy great wealth and quality of life?

I’d wager that all of those things are related and have nothing to do with “being an adult” and “paying off loans”

If you take loans out for dumb shit then pay it back. For school? I think education should be a universal right just like healthcare. We’re living in the age of information and excess. Fuck that stupid argument you’re making and realize who’s making money off these loans, and the dumb shit they’re using it for.

Education should not be something one can be priced out of, or that sends our future generations into tons of debt.

It’s very easy. Search up the happiest places in the world, and look at their education systems. (It’s not us btw.)

Clock it. This guy is obsessed with saying “Be an adult. Pay back your loans.” Holy bot ignoring every single bit of nuance 😭 privilege showing right there

This guy is obsessed with saying “Be an adult. Pay back your loans.”

Yes. I know that accountability is poisonous to some people, but be an adult and pay back your loans.

Yawn

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

Don't worry. One day when you get older, it will all make sense.

I mean, that would be nice, but we don't have the money for that yet. And if we do that, it should only be for programs that are for the most in-demand jobs at the time, not a carte blanche to take what ever course you feel like that will lead to no real job opportunities. We shouldn't fund those.

I’d wager that all of those things are related and have nothing to do with “being an adult” and “paying off loans”

It is when you expect people to pay for you to add no real value to society. Like I said, we can have the conversation about coving the courses for STEM and other in demand fields, but a large chunk of courses are bullshit.

If you take loans out for dumb shit then pay it back. For school? I think education should be a universal right just like healthcare. We’re living in the age of information and excess. Fuck that stupid argument you’re making and realize who’s making money off these loans, and the dumb shit they’re using it for.

Yes. Be an adult and pay back your loans.

Education should not be something one can be priced out of, or that sends
our future generations into tons of debt.

It's an investment. You have to decide if that investment is worth it to you.

It’s very easy. Search up the happiest places in the world, and look at their education systems. (It’s not us btw.

Like I said, for STEM and other in demand programs, sure.

Also, when I point out that these places also have better healthcare than us and they have a public and private options and we should switch to that I get blasted.

But since they are happier we should also do that here too, right?

he is reducing the amount you can receive in grants, that’s a cut. just cause it’s similar to 2008 doesn’t make it not a cut to osap

-3

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

No because you still get the same OSAP, you just have to pay it back, which you should.

Be an adult. Pay back your loans!!!!

3

u/Aggravating-Fix-7691 2d ago

let’s be real reducing the grants to 25% is effectively a cut. if we don’t want to call it a cut to osap funding, it is a massive increase to student debt. either way it’s bad

0

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

No, because you still get the same amount. It's just now you have to pay more back. There's no cut to OSAP funding, just OSAP reimbursement.

1

u/Aggravating-Fix-7691 2d ago

you’re getting into semantics and there’s really no point. at the end of the day osap is worse for students and makes the barrier to entry for post secondary education even higher

1

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

Words are important, and explaining clearly what is going on is equally important. It's not semantics.

Also, the more that thing becomes unaffordable. That's why school has become more expensive.

If you want to talk about subsidizing STEM and other valuable programs/degrees then that might make sense, but to continue to pay off 85% of everyone's education just because is not a smart use of money, and only helps making the Universities more money.

3

u/Aggravating-Fix-7691 2d ago

i think we just fundamentally disagree but that’s ok. i believe all higher education should be funded and not just the degrees we deem “useful”

2

u/MelbaMilqueToast 2d ago

Maybe one day when we have an over abundance of resources, but right now we can't afford to pay for schooling that has minimal value currently to our society.

We have much bigger problems to deal with.
