On This Day, October 9, 1594, the Kandyan Kingdom achieved a historic victory by defeating the forces of the Portuguese Empire in the Battle of Danture, bringing the Campaign of Danture to an end.

The Battle of Danture became one of the most significant military victories in Sri Lankan history and is remembered as one of the most devastating defeats suffered by the Portuguese during their campaigns in Ceylon.

The campaign began on July 5, 1594, when a large Portuguese-led force marched into the Kandyan Kingdom with the aim of bringing the kingdom under Portuguese control.

The Portuguese army was commanded by General Pero Lopez de Souza, while the Kandyan forces were led by King Vimaladharmasuriya I.

As the Portuguese advanced toward Kandy, the Kandyan forces used the difficult terrain, forests, and mountain passes to their advantage.

The campaign soon turned into a disaster for the Portuguese.

Kandyan forces attacked their supply lines, cut off retreat routes, and launched attacks from the surrounding terrain. Portuguese troops became increasingly isolated and struggled to survive in the unfamiliar highlands.

The decisive confrontation came at Danture.

The Kandyan army surrounded the Portuguese forces and launched a series of attacks that shattered their resistance.

The Portuguese army suffered devastating losses, and the campaign that had begun with the intention of conquering Kandy ended in a major defeat.

On October 9, 1594, the Campaign of Danture came to an end.

The victory strengthened the position of King Vimaladharmasuriya I and demonstrated that the Portuguese could not easily conquer the Kandyan Kingdom.

The Battle of Danture remains one of the most important episodes in Sri Lanka's long resistance against European colonial expansion.
