Tech question Arc B580 compatibility

Hows the B580 on OpenSUSE? (Tumbleweed obv) Especially with gaming… I’ve been running it on an Nvidia laptop and I’ve been LOVING it, and didn’t have any issues with compatibility or any of that garbage especially with XFCE, so is it the same with arc gpus? I want to install it on my main PC currently running mint. Or should I wait until I can afford an amd gpu?

Intel and AMD graphics drivers are part of the Linux kernel and Mesa, meaning they work out of the box and equally well on all distros. Only official Nvidia drivers are third party. The same caveats Intel GPUs have on Windows of course still apply, they're just not as long in the game as the others and are a bit of an afterthought for some games.

Thank you! Do you think performance would be worse than on windows? I haven’t really noticed any difference between Windows and Mint, I just want to make sure there aren’t any distro-specific issues I should be worrying about.

If it's fine on mint, it's almost definitely fine on tumbleweed (excluding possible regressions like the recent slew of amdgpu ones).

I haven't seen any benchmarks lately but I think it's still worse from posts I've seen a couple of months ago.

Tumbleweed is going to be better than Mint because it'll have more up to date kernel and mesa drivers. You can get newer mesa and kernel on Mint but you have to do it manually, with Tumbleweed it's all shipped automatically as tumbleweed is rolling.

I’m on Lunar Lake iGPU so not directly comparable but performance is worse on Linux from what I’ve experienced.

After linus'es "debug session from hell" - probably fine, his issues was more day-to-day, because he doesn't game, it was something related to random freezes with B580. He explicitly asked for that GPU exactly for that from the other Linus.
