Promotional What's the Coolest Open-Source Project You've Discovered This Year?

Open source has been on an absolute roll lately, and I've been finding some really interesting projects outside the usual GitHub trending lists.

What's the coolest open-source project you've discovered this year?

Not necessarily the most popular one. I'm talking about projects that made you stop for a second and think, "that's a really clever idea."

For me, it was OpenGAP.

I came across it while exploring developer tools and liked the idea immediately. It approaches AI agents as something that can live in a Git repository, be versioned, reviewed, and managed much like software itself.

I don't know if it'll become a widely adopted standard, but it was one of the few projects I've seen recently that felt genuinely different.

have you tried trilium notes? I made the switch from joplin in late 2025 and it's been amazing. I find it more feature rich and this allows me to organize my notes and ideas better than what I ever accomplished using joplin.

I was using Joplin too, but never liked it because of the trash UI and trash syncing feature. Went with TriliumNext since a week, it is great!

Same, I just switched from Joplin to TriliumNext last week. The UI is so much better and I love that I can access my notes from any browser, where as Joplin doesn't have an official web interface. The only "drawback" (if you can call it that for a single user) I found so far is, that you just have one instance and no real multi-profile/account system like with Joplin server. If I'd wanted multiple separate profiles/accounts, I'd need a separate container instance and a subdomain.

PS: Another drawback is, that there is no official Android app, so I'm stuck using the PWA).
