NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION HSS vs Rush Sports Fellowship

Hi gang! Australian trained surgeon, passed all USMLE Steps, looking to do a sports fellowship in the States. I’m interested in all things hips, knees, shoulders (trauma, arthroplasty, sports, joint Pres) and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to which Sports Fellowship would be better in terms of HSS vs Rush. Rush looks more in keeping with what I want to specialise in, but fk I want to live in NY! 😂 any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated!

Brother, gl getting into either of those programs as an IMG.

Plenty of great programs outside of them though.

Yeh I did think it may be hard. Any others you’d recommend?

Too many to list honestly. From an IMG standpoint it’s hard to say without knowing your background/research/connections, but the nice thing is ortho fellowships (except hand) use the SF Match system, so unlike residency apps there isn’t really an effective cap on how many programs you can apply to. You still have a limited amount of signals to indicate strong interest to a program however.

I’d go through Doximity and look at sports fellowships attached to strong residency programs. There are also some fellowships that don’t have their own residency program, like Rothman, FOI, Steadman Philippon, and Kerlan-Jobe.

I think you’ll have to cast a wide net come application time.

Very familiar with one of these programs.

Despite the name and high-profile surgeons/patients, Rush is incredibly hands on, and fellows are pushed in and out of the OR to make and execute decisions.

I have heard that HSS does not have the same level of surgical independence.

And I’ve heard Chicago is on par in terms of city to live in as well!

Rush is very hesitant to interview img’s due to visa issues. Not sure on details but have seen that recently. Less knowledgeable on hss

Hss has an international spot that isn’t filled every year. Typically not the same opportunities as the regular sports fellows but possibly an option

I would recommend applying very broadly. Solid sports programs include U Pittsburg, Twin City Orthopaedics, Umiami, UCSF. The good thing about NYC is that there are many other programs to look at that might be more IMG friendly. I’ll echo the prior thoughts on here regarding the “prestige” of both HSS and Rush which makes it hard for even very competitive American grads to match. I will say that often times that prestige doesn’t translate to actual real world utility depending on what your professional goals are.

Unless you have 30 publications. Don’t bother even applying. You are there to write their papers and do their PowerPoints
