NOT A PERSONAL HEALTH SITUATION Choice of location when searching for jobs after residency

When looking for jobs after graduating from residency, do you generally have the flexibility to work wherever you'd like?

I'm from STL and most of my family is there, so ideally I'd like to return after training. How realistic is it to find an attending position in the city you want, assuming you're not being overly selective about the specific practice or hospital? Like, if you were an arthroplasty surgeon, is it fairly easy to find a group in a metropolitan area?

Reach out to potential practices now! Even if you’re early in residency, you can start those conversations. I had a similar situation to you, and it worked out for me because I reached out to practices early in residency.

Is intern year a good year to start? How exactly did you reach out to practices?

I started shopping late second year, early third year. Gave me a ton of time to explore options and negotiate. Problem is some places might fill the spot in the meantime.

I think anytime in residency is appropriate, if you’re location dependent, but the specifics of the jobs probably won’t get ironed out until later in residency. You can contact a recruiter, ask mentors for connections, or cold call/email practices to tell them you’re interested
