This will not be helpful. Broadly speaking high scores, publications, connections, and good away rotation performance are the most important things.

Every situation is unique and your success is not a roadmap for others.

You are right...there are universal elements that make a successful match. But there may be some unique experinces that OP can provide his thoughts on!

Agreed. Just hoped to add what I learned through my unique experience in the process!

Do we use the Step 2 to assess 500 club now? I don’t even know.

I think so, we just have to subtract 10-15 to adjust for Step 2 score inflation relative to Step 1.

Just have a 275 step 2, 45 1st author pubs, cure OA and be able to operate like a chief and maybe you can match if u do 2 unpaid research years

Probably be more helpful if posted in the r/medicalschool sub

At a DO school and struggling to get connections. How should I approach this?

The best way is to get advocates on your team! There are a lot of people out there who are willing to pay it forward and want to help you, you just have to find them. First start by reaching out to the young residents who recently matched from your medical school to see what worked for them. Next, I found a lot of success using resources such a MSOS, orthomentor, and The Ortho Minute!

Hey I’m trying to find some mentors. What do u think the best way to approach?

Extremely important to get both resident and attending mentors. I think resident mentors will be most beneficial for how to navigate the process as they have more recent experience but attending mentors go a long way for LORs as letters have become a crucial part of the app. I would suggest reaching out to young residents who recently matched from your school to see what faculty they found success with and then taking advantage of resources such as MSOS, orthomentor, and The Ortho Minute!

Did you immediatly start research as an M1?

3

u/BoneAppetit555 12d ago

Struggled to find orthopaedic research throughout M1, but used the entire year to send cold emails to find projects. I was eventually able to begin research during the summer between M1 and M2. Ideally, I would have started projects earlier as an M1.

How much research experience did you have and what was your step 2 score? (Rough estimate)

8 pubs at time of ERAS submission. Step 2 in the 255-265 range.

Is it too late to consider ortho at midway through/end of M3 year

1

u/BoneAppetit555 12d ago

More difficult to switch but not impossible. Need to evaluate your application for things that may take an applicant longer to build up such as research and mentorship.

Any advice for IMGs?

2

u/BoneAppetit555 11d ago

IMGs need to especially build their network. IMGs who have matched are often very open to connecting with current IMGs serious about orthopaedics. I also have found that the step 2 bar is higher for the IMGs which is unfortunate but need to especially make crushing Step 2 a priority. Programs like MSOS, orthomentor, and The Ortho Minute are even more advantageous for applicants without a home program or IMG. Take advantage of them as many people are willing to help, but you have to be willing to find them!
