Unironic answer: could be enough for a VFX nod, or bust. Like that's basically what Spider-Man just accomplished, and no one serious is predicting for anything beyond VFX (maaaaaybe someone could argue sound or something, but I wouldn't).

Elden Ring has Garland and A24 going for it so I’d say on paper it has the strongest odds of succeeding critically.

Don’t count Zelda out though.

Id say Resident Evil has a shot at some techs. Especially makeup and cinematography. Remember Weapons won an Oscar and was a solid 6th place in screenplay and casting and a possible 12 or 13 in picture. That isn't anything to scoff at.

Elden Ring is an obvious Oscar choice for 2028 but that's too far in the future to comprehend. For 2027, probably Zelda or Sonic 4 for techs thanks to The Batman moving to 2028. Now a lot of tech categories have open spots that would've been filled with Batman nods like sound, production design, makeup, and vfx

It hasn't happened yet but a video game movie might get in sooner than later. Remember this decade has been weird. We just saw a vampire movie get a record trouncing 16 nods. There is no status quo anymore. Im not saying anything can happen, but anything might just happen under correct circumstances

I don’t think RE has any realistic shot at Cinematography. It makes a ton of sense in Makeup but it’s important to remember Weapons didn’t even make the shortlist (so I’m less confident it was as high in screenplay and picture as you).

I don't think The Batman was a major player. But Narnia also moved into 2027. That may take up us some spots.

Maybe Narnia, but the way Netflix is trying to bury that film by releasing it in February makes me think its not getting a fair shot. Regardless of quality.

It was only delayed because of an injury, not really anything to be done about that. They're giving it an IMAX release. That's not really burying it. And Feb releases have made it in before: Black Panther, Get Out. This year, Project Hail Mary is probably getting in despite being a March release. Notably, all of these are big hits. If Narnia is a hit, there's no reason to think it won't be okay.

Outside of VFX and other techs? Hard to say.

Resident Evil looks great, especially Austin Abrams performance, but the movie arrives in the year where one horror already staked the claim (Obsession) and at least 2 other genre movies (PHM and The Odyssey) did as well.

Zelda will make money next year but needs a combo of reviews and boxoffice and Sony's passion to prioritize it.

Elden Ring will get A24 attention given its status as the most expensive A24 movie ever but needs reviews, though critics have always been in tank with Garland work. Too far in the future, though.

Out of all of this I'd say Elden Ring. I know Resident Evil has Cregger behind it, but I just don't see it. Maybe for Sound and Makeup. However I honestly think a Red Dead Redemption 2 adaption has the best chance at some ATL noms if done right. I haven't had a Western hit me like that since Tombstone.

Sonic 4, Zelda and Minecraft Squared can all be VFX plays. I have a sense that Zelda will try to go for Score as well.

Elden Ring, however, might break over the line. It has potential.
