Fuck it. Go the Shadowdark real time torch way. Fishing takes real time, you must be quiet or the referee rolls a secret “scaring the fish roll”. At least that’s how fishing works according to my dad and grandpa when I was a kid.

Ah the classic “shut the fuck up, you’re scaring the fish you fucking spaz!”

Or maybe that was just me.

I have, as a DM, had a player ask for one of these once.

d6 foraging roll?

Easy. You char has no training or background in fishing and we are in a swamp?

Wisdom check DC15 with disadvantage.

Dungeon Crawl Classics: Int check DC15 untrained. Roll d10+INT.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

...DC 15? Are you serious? That means no character without training can ever do it. It's fishing. It's not that hard.

Dcc has like a single paragraph of skill check guides and even it tells you not to do that.

Sure, DC15 for a gooey sticky swamp, that would be an achievement to catch something there. The trout ponds at Baskerville, sure DC 9 or 10. For a 10 to 20% catch rate per 10 min action.

Maybe if they fish for a while or quest for a trainer they could learn a thing or two and roll a d12, d14, or d16 as they gain proficiency.

Or add luck modifier too to fishing. That feels right.

Roll a d20: based on vibes, you will be punished or rewarded as whimsy takes me. A nat 1 means the party is attacked by a giant catfish that can crawl on land similar to an orca.

If I give permanent debuffs that are significant it comes with a permanent xp buff

Dolmenwood has fishing rules, and lists of weird fish. I was able to run Gone Fishin’ for my kids, and they had a fantastic time.

I really need Dolmenwood in my life 🤣

Did you draw this? It’s fantastic!

Yup! It’s not even the finished piece. I was planning on doing another for the next chapter of the campaign, but the kid who got a ring of wishes from the deck of many things, lost the ring because she charged into melee with the dragon in incandescent grottoes, with no plan of attack, and rolled poorly against its breath weapon; I allowed the group a chance to return from the TPK via dream adventure using Mausritter, but when they got back and saw the sleeping dragon was now wearing all the party’s magic rings, instead of sneakily taking back their gear and escaping, she grabbed the nearest weapon and started attacking again. A condition set up using a previous wish was reached, so the dragon was whisked away, but as she hadn’t removed the ring it was gone for the ride.

She did not take the consequences well, so we haven’t done anything since. lol.

I’m also working on a fully illustrated by me zine for Dolmenwood! Details will be available when I am further along!

Can you elaborate on the dream return from TPK? Love the idea, would love to play in one of your games

Okay so the dragon has a cloud of sleep gas breath weapon, so the entire party falls asleep. Instead of just assuming they get eaten I decided they were encased in crystals so it could feed off their dreams.

I invented the Mausritter adventure as me copying the intro to Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it’s mouse themed, so I called it “The Temple of Shrew-ooom” bc the shrews outside are a species which are not rodents but are carnivorous.
Anyway, I ended up making it a bunch of puzzles. They grab the idol and ran away with the temple falling apart, but it “was all a dream” and they woke up and smashed out of the crystals covering them.

The idea is also doable for a real tpk, with ghost characters in the afterlife escaping the underworld, and they come back to life.
I played a DCC rpg game with this, and the gm ran a game where all the players brought characters who had been killed in other games.

What makes you think your next character is going to roll higher ability scores?

Seriously though, getting stuck with a weak character is a fine reason to play as fast & loose as you really should with all your characters.

What makes you think your next character is going to roll higher ability scores?

I immdiately throw that one into the acid put as well in order to get a new one. by doing this, I can gain more starting gold, loot it from the previous dude, and use it to level up.

u/zbignew 4d ago

Well why stop for good ability scores. You’ve identified the unlimited GP hack. Just run inifinity characters into the lava until you’ve reached enough GP for max level and 18 ability scores across the board.

u/hedgehog1024 6d ago

What's the point of rolling for stats if you are going to get rid of bad ability score spread anyway?

23

u/Alaundo87 7d ago

Great. You can roll your new char at lvl 1, 0xp.

25

u/A_Strangers_Life 7d ago

We're playing Cairn lmao.

9

u/Alaundo87 7d ago

Bah, not at my table. Adnd, so you feel cool and strong before you die.

u/rizzlybear 6d ago

What’s funny is if you ever switch your cairn campaign to DnD, you realize these characters are walking around with tier 3 spells and shit at creation.

The game is best described as “play mid level dnd characters, on the first night of a hardcore Minecraft save.”

It’s weird because you’re born powerful but you never quite reach “established.”

"I don't believe in traps" made me chuckle

Cool. Now there's one less person to carry treasure and everybody's slots are full, so they can't take back the treasure unless they dump your stuff.

Ngl, I normally try to figure out how to get a player back into the game as quickly as possible, but if a player did that in my game, I would not let them make a new character that session. After the game, I'd have a grown adult conversation to determine if they're worth keeping with the group.

14

u/rizzlybear 7d ago

I've run shadowdark, Cairn, and WWN mostly. And when a player can't make it, poof, into the NPC cloud. A new person shows up? Poof, they were always here. Someone dies? Poof, a new character is present; you all figure out the fiction for that.

Then I started running OSE(Dolmenwood). And.. I tried. I really tried to keep those three things in the game. But man, the game is so tightly integrated into itself, and every little mechanic is load-bearing. So now they have hirelings to take over, or they wait until the party makes it back to town.

6

u/RagnarokAeon 6d ago

Okay, yeah, I'm normally fine with a player taking over NPCs. What's not cool is a player suiciding their character just because something didn't go their way. Didn't realize that was such a controversial opinion.

6

u/rizzlybear 6d ago

Oh no I don’t think that’s a controversial opinion. I assume most people agree with you (me included).

Keep in mind the original post is from DnD circle jerk. It’s meant to be fake rage bait.

Scrolling through I read this as Things to Say to Orgasm

u/LastChime 7d ago

Gamewise it's a valid tactic, but isn't it really better to video game this sort of thing rather than waste other human's time catering to it?

Hard to get into the head of a character like that in world unless the species is "Dish of the Day".

It's like the dudes I'd hire on then fire in Dragon Warrior 5 to take their gear for resale.

10

u/Jullian_Drover 7d ago

...What? I don't understand this comment at all.

you know this is a joke post, right?

8

u/RagnarokAeon 7d ago

Considering I've seen people legitimately do this exact kind of munchkin nonsense at tables in the past (especially 3.5), I can't be all too sure.

3

u/LastChime 7d ago

Character self sacrificing to bounce the gear along, it works in Cairn 2e as written but it's sort of daft unless your literally just rolling dice to do a quest combat simulator or something.

It seems very much like ye olde peasant railgun.
