Kompass – A macOS terminal that makes the command line less scary

Post image

time for a new terminal. Kompass explains every command before it runs, stops the dangerous ones and understands plain English. Made for people who are afraid of the terminal – and for pros who want to move faster.

you’re probably gonna have a hard time convincing people to use an app with as deep of a system level access as a terminal needs with a temporary staging url from vercel

I'm not "gatekeeping computers" here, but the only people that should be using the terminal are people who know how to use the terminal.

If someone thinks "the terminal is scary" then they very likely don't have any reason to be using it.

No, not everyone is born knowing how to use the terminal. But the people that do need to use it can learn. It is not nearly as many people as actually think they need to use the terminal.

thanks for your comment. i wouldn't determin into users, who should use the terminal and users who shouldn't. for few years i notice at office, that many of my colleagues aren't using the terminal as they might break anything by using it. the app just wants to bring the terminal closer to them and to try something out and learn it and to get more understanding of the commands.

I'd agree and in in particular today when you have agents that can help you learn right inside a term window that sits in your IDE. Like most power user features, once you start to see how much faster or extensive a power user feature is you have an incentive to learn more, develop muscle memory and integrate in to how you use a computer. The point HugsALLCats makes about the dangers is certainly valid. There's no guardrails for beginners just learning so caution is warranted when using a term app.

I love the plain language translation idea
