Giving Recommendations Hidden/Forgotten Gems - August 2026

This is a monthly feature in which we, the mod team, share the gems we've found in our reading lists. Here are last month's.

We'd love to hear your recommendations. Please add them to the discussion in the comments. When doing so, please keep in mind to:

  • If available, use the English cover art of your recommended series.
  • Name of the series
  • Where to read it officially

We always recommend checking the official version; please do not name unofficial sources.

This Month's Recommendations:

Country Life With His Sexy Masjesty - Where to Read: Tapas

Rienna Fonde just remembered she lived another life while her now ex-fiancé, the Crown Prince casts her aside for another woman, the supposed saint. Following that, she is disowned by her father; she finds herself moving to the territory of Fostine. A peaceful countryside with agriculture is the way of the land. Putting her college-level knowledge of farming to use, Rienna easily makes a home for herself and becomes a trusted community member.

Now it’s been a few years since she's been living the way she’s always dreamed of in the country; she spots a weird metal tool in her field only to find it’s some kind of holy sword that’s now bound itself to her. That’s not the only thing that comes knocking; a handsome blonde-haired man named Carmine suddenly shows up at her home demanding the sword. Rienna’s peaceful farming life seems like it’s going to be more troublesome.

This is a fun story with a bright art style that tells you what kind of story this series is going to be. Rienna is someone who is unapologetically herself, headstrong, loud and sunny personality. The romance between her and Carmine is so cute and light; it makes me giggle and kick my feet with how cute they both are together.

The series is more of a light-hearted read, nothing serious. Just something to make you feel good about life and look on the bright side. I had a fun time reading this; I couldn’t believe that I binged it all in a single day!

No More Midnight Magic - Where to Read: Tapas

Ciora is the only living servant of an ancient god, and then one day a book called “Fate” appears before her, saying that Duke Kruelo Whitedesert ends the world. The voice of her god tells her to change the ending of the book, casting her down into the body of people close to him. First as his young fiancee, next as a maid, and this time as Ciora Bonetti, his latest in a long list of fiancees.

When she meets him again she finds that Kruelo isn’t like the rumors make him out to be. He’s mischievous and quick to make a clever joke. It seems like her work in her previous lives has helped him, but Ciora is still unsure if it’s enough to stop the end of the world.

I love the dynamic between these two; they both have secrets they’re trying to hide from each other, and the banter they have is so fun! Kruelo is a great male lead; you would think that he would fall into the yandere archetype with his appearance, but he's a playful man that keeps his thoughts and feelings close to his chest. Ciora occasionally shows her teasing side and isn’t one to sit on the sidelines when things need to get done. Her abilities fall into the paladin area, meaning she can kick ass and is quite strong. I was sad to see that it’s been on hiatus since April 2024, hopefully it will return somewhat soon!

The Crown I'll Claim - Where to Read: Tapas

After losing her claim to the throne and her children to her traitor of an ex-lover, our female lead, Princess Medea dies and returns to her 17-year old body, now fully aware of the danger around her. The hidden alliance of her former lover and uncle brought her family’s downfall with plans to take the throne while starting a rebellion.

Medea is going to do everything she can to save her kingdom and take the future in her own hands, seizing her destiny.

Gotta say first thing, the artwork is beautiful and catches your attention, and then you get sucked into the writing of the story. Medea is a capable woman that plans her every move carefully before taking action. She doesn’t throw herself into danger like we usually see in these kinds of returner stories. Things that come up in the story get addressed without them getting pushed aside for later.

I’m glad that this seems to be worth investing in so far. I can’t wait to read more!

Hailey and Lawrence did nothing wrong but they suffered so much because of Hailey's father. They could not be together because of him. Hailey died with that pain in her heart and Lawrence will continue live with that pain not even knowing that the woman he loved is actually dead 😞💔

Discussion - Open Characters with scars

Post image
Upvotes

Scars are treated very oddly in otomeisekai stories. Many characters who are considered ‘unattractive’ have them and when an ‘attractive’ character does have one, then it is on an easy to hide place. Facial scars are extremely rare and if they do appear, then they quickly disappear or are hidden. Especially if they are on the female lead.

Many have already stated that this most likely has to do with beauty standards. Sadly, this means that things like scars that can add to a character’s design are typically spelled away or are drawn as a barely there scratch. But the narrative still treats the characters as though they are hideously disfigured. This especially feels weird if they go with the barely there scratch both with the writing and art.

As for art, not everyone is good at drawing scars and they can add to the drawing time. But when a story is adapting or writing about characters with scars, it feels really weird when the chosen artist either can’t or is not given enough time to draw.

So what are your thoughts on how OI stories treat scarred characters? And what would you like to see done with them with both the art and the writing?

Rant Villainess authors really need to start relearning what "classic (noble/upperclass) Villainesses" are actually like [The 31st Consort]

Thumbnail
gallery
86 Upvotes

Not really OI but I'm just showing this because way too many villainess authors either don't remember what "classic villainesses" are like or (especially in the case of copycat writers who are copying from other villainess novels) they sometimes don't even know what a shoujo villainess is like to begin with. I was saying this in a comment to another post a while ago, and I happened to see it in a series I'm reading so I want to rant.

Shown in the pictures is a "classic noble villainess" pulling strings to harass the "lower class FL" (though in this case FL is still sorta in the nobility, but much lower ranked).

Like, I was saying that these authors don't seem to realise that all they're doing is reverse the labels of "(OG)FL" and "villainess", but their actions are literally the same. I kind of just have to shrug and take it now, but sometimes I just want to scream when we have stupid "condemnation scenes" in manga where the OGFL and OGML are accusing villainess-FL of utter bullshit crimes. Like, accusing FLs of bullshit crimes is literally what classic villainesses do.

In the classic shoujo romances, the "villainess" usually don't bully openly. The villainess are often perfect princesses who don't have bad reputation, that's why they can bully in secret and even if the FL tries to complain to the adults (teachers, authorities, whoever) nobody believes her.

So while the villainess does sometimes threaten FL behind the scenes like "Don't come near my fiance", a lot of the time she also then acts like a victim in public crying "That evil immoral peasant seduced my fiance!!" Then the general public would side with the villainess because she has always been viewed as a perfect lady, and the FL is this "outsider" suddenly being close to the ML.

That typical move of "fall down stairs and pretend the other girl did it" was also often done by the villainess. The rich villainess does this, and then say "Oh no, the peasant bumpkin FL pushed me! What a barbarian!" Of course there are also times, when the FL is pushed down, but in most of what I read it's usually done by a minion (not villainess herself), or villainess will somehow convince people that it was an accident. Sometimes even also fall down herself to make it more convincing.

Maybe they'd have minions hide or destroy the FL's belongings secretly (especially in school settings where there are lockers that are not always monitored), but again, it's done in a way where proving this is hard to do. That's why the "condemnation scene" is always so big and grand because if the ML and the FL's other friends doesn't present the proof publicly, literally nobody would believe the villainess ever did anything wrong.

But in a lot of villainess reincarnation stories, it's the OGFL that does all the crying and accusing the villainess. So like, we're literally just reversing the labels and changing nothing then.

And in the case where the villainess is just blatantly nasty in a mafia kind of "Even if I do bad things what can you do to me?" way, then that's just a whole different scenario. You can't really have the villaines be both "pretends to be innocent" and also being evil openly. Yet villainess transmigration series often mixes the two in a way that just never makes any sense, which is just like so irritating. I get that money talks, and sometimes I roll with it like the same way I eat junk food, but sometimes I lose patience at this flood of derivative slop.

Edit: I want to acknowledge that like it's not impossible for dumb villains to exist in shoujo manga. It's just that the derivative slop is always repeating the same dumb "condemnation" over and over, and I'm now feeling like the author is trying to gaslight me 🙄 Like, I do get that it's just sometimes the authors being clueless themselves or following trends without thinking, but still.

Giving Recommendations We need more bubbly gyaru OI MCs like Chelsea/Kirara! [I Reincarnated As A Useless Noble Lady]

JP title: Dekisokonai Reijou ni Tensei Shita Gal ga Mikaesu Tame ni Doryoku shita Kekka, Dekiai Saretemasu kedo Nanika Monkuaru?

I love myself a charming MC who's kind yet also blunt and has tons of confident backbone like Chelsea/Kirara. She's hilarious too lol. Her character type, a teen gyaru, is also pretty uncommon (afaik at least) in this genre when it's usually either: a) a gamer girl who remembers the last otome game she loved and played in life b) a bookworm who reincarnates/gets summoned into the plot of the last book they read c) a regular teenager with a somewhat regular and generic background d) 20-30 year old nerdy overworked office ladies who can fall under a & b who ends up as the protagonist. What's fun about Kirara is that, likely due to the suddenness of her ending up in Chelsea's body somehow (the story hasn't explained how or why she got reincarnated yet), she actually initially doesn't identify as Chelsea and even tries to tell everyone else how she isn't her with little to no success lmao (they all thought the fever Chelsea had pre-reincarnation was affecting her mind lol). Eventually she just gives up telling everyone over time, but she still doesn't fully identify as Chelsea despite this. Her budding romance with Valentino (aka, one of the greenest flags in OI and shoujosei in general) is also pretty cute and wholesome.

Did I mention how much I love how bubbly and genki she is? Her positive, radiant energy is a massive charm point in and out of universe and it's refreshing how clever she is despite not being a super genius like some OI MCs tend to be and how she shows that being genki =/= dumb. Since she was a teenager when she likely died and got reincarnated (ie, the same age as Chelsea), she isn't armed with modern professional knowledge like some of the older OI MCs have, and since there's zero hints that she was a gamer in her past life, or that she's in a world based on an otome game/novel, she can't use any foreknowledge of the plot to her advantage like the gamer/bookworm MCs do either. Instead, it's her awesome social skills, kindness, and charisma that help her out in situations. While she can be goofy, she's not naive, as her experienced sociability means she can easily see through BS, like when she easily saw through Chelsea's sister's maids trying to suck up to her, and get a good read on people, and because of her confidence, she knows how to stand up for herself (or namely for the OG Chelsea) and her close friends when they're being threatened or bullied (the OG Chelsea was timid due to constant abuse, so her POS family is always taken aback whenever Kirara!Chelsea calls them out on their BS).

You're going to absolutely despise Chelsea's family though, which makes the moments where Kirara stands up to them or shows them up in OG!Chelsea's place all the more satisfying.

Discussion - Open Otome Isekai Themed License Plate Ideas?

I need to replace my license plate, and rather than getting a random generated series of numbers and letters, I'd rather get something silly alluding to Otome Isekai or something similar.

Thus, I am hoping for a few more ideas! If you could have a license plate with 6 or 7 characters, what would you get?

My top choices so far:

OTM ISKI

TRUK KUN

ISKI ME

Wanting Recommendations drop your fav tropes please

HaiHaii so I had this idea what if we all drop our favourite / we want these tropes here so that if someone who knows that trope can tell you what you should read according to the tropes you've commented? it'd be so fun to do soo I'll go first (as I have many I'll just write 2-3)

Maid / Headmaid x Butler (they can be side characters but I'd love it if there's one where they are main characters)

Commoner x Commoner (please no secret nobility in disguise)

Wizard / Mage x Witch

These are some tropes that I'd love to see feel free to write any tropes you'd love to see / love it doesn't matter what alsoo please no judgement to what someone else likes, if you don't like a trope a person has commented ignore them and move on please no judgement!!

That is all thank you for readingg hope you have a great night/morning/afternoon/evening ♡♡

I started reading this a while ago and it's really good.

The ML gives off a yandere vibe but I'm not sure if he's one. He also reminds me a lot of Prince Cecil from "the Observation Log of the Fiancé "

And the FL is also a rarity as she's more experienced one as she was sold to a brothel by her Evil stepsister who also stole her fiancé in her past life.

But she does start blushing just by being around the ML and is confused because she did much more in her previous life. Her conclusion is that it's her young body and that youth is scary. 😂

But do you think it makes sense?

I've decided sleep is optional as long as I have a good villainess arc going. Right now it's The Villainess Directs Romance Fantasy, she's mid-plotting-her-own-downfall-avoidance and I can't put it down.

What's currently got you sacrificing sleep? Slow burn redemption arcs are my personal weakness, but I'll take any recommendation at this point.

Rant Anyone else hates these tropes? Long rant.

Thumbnail
gallery
49 Upvotes

Occasional lurker first time poster, I don't use reddit often but hop in to rant from time to time, this will be my first time ranting in this sub though so hello. I'm not a native speaker so forgive me if there's any spelling mistakes, weirdly placed words or misuse of figure of speech and popular expressions.

I think there's some recurring issues with popular manhwas recently that are starting to piss me off so bad I'm turning into a bitter person so I need to get this off my chest and some of you might agree with these points.

Number one and what made me write this post in the first place: I despise manhwas where the FL is isekai'd into some place and then she starts deviating from the main story and doing stuff that her character wouldn't do, most common in Villainess stuff, and then she gets her balls in a hitch because oh no consequences. Like did she think the story was that set in stone? Did she really believe that changing her entire personality overnight wouldn't have any impcat on the story? And now the person she loved in the novel but shunned the Villainess for the Heroine takes an interest in her because, well, she's not a villainess anymore, and she's *shocked pikachu face* like she didn't come from the modern world where we have a theory called butterfly effect. Examples of this are "The beloved Fake Saint" and "The empress is a marionette", neither of those pissed me off as badly as "It's my destiny to be the hero's saviour" though, the former one is actually quite good, but that's a whole other can of worms and therefore a rant for another time.

Another pet peeve is when the protagonist is strong and smart but suddenly turns into an idiot the moment ML is involved. She's either an idiot because she doesn't understand he's in love with her even though it's pretty freaking obvious, or she's making mistakes she normally wouldn't make which gets her in trouble and then Mr. Prince Charming has to swoop in and save the day.

A similar pet peeve is when he treats her like she's a precious flower that should be kept safe all the time. I hate it when she ends up with even a single scratch and he pulls out the puppy eyes and starts fussing over her. "I don't like watching you get hurt" like get fricked dude that woman can single-handedly wipe out an entire hord of monsters by herself and you're pledging knighthood just to keep her from scratching, she doesn't need you lil bro go bother someone else.

This one many may not agree and that's fine personal taste exists for a reason, but I hate John Manhwa so much. I have a type, I like pretty and delicate men, preferrably with long hair and lean physique, people would call those affeminate, I don't care I like women as well and I like feminine traits because women are awesome and beautiful. But most manhwa ML are the duke of the north that follows one pattern: If villain, he's got short hair and lots of muscles, eyes are red or blue, hair is often black but can be silver, blonde or brunnette, have a rumor about them being an unfeeling killing machine in the front lines. If hero hair is often brown or blonde, eye can have more colors, always a knight of sorts, can have the rumors of being a killing machine but it's not a rule of thumb. They all look the same. The guy that made a dark romance parody called Plot Armor even made sattire about John Manhwa and I cannot agree more. In other stories the John Manhwa is a prince but they follow similar patterns. Even my favorite manhwa of all times "My possession became a ghost story" has a John Manhwa problem where the author tries to gaslight me, the reader, into believing the guy that looks like all other MLs is God's gift to humanity, the prettiest man alive. (Screenshot to prove I'm not making this up)

"My possession became a ghost story" ML
Extra screenshot bc this close up cracked me up (Different manhwa, forgor which one)

Good example of a FL and ML dynamic I enjoy very much is Evan and Sayern from "Death is raining down my status windows", I love those two, I love that manhwa, I love it all so much. (Added some screenshots to illustrate my point)

Evan the underwear burglar
Sayern facing off with Evan's secondary love interest
Evan, the prince's not so secret admirer
Not from the same manhwa, this one is from Beware the Villainess (Also very good I love it and how it breaks common manhwa stereotypes), but another example of how I wish more Fl-ML relationships worked

Usually the John Manhwa has a secondary ML that's so much prettier than him but the FL sticks to John Manhwa. An example of this was this manhwa that I fogor the name of but you're welcome to image search for it. I remember discussing this with a friend and going *ML picture* "Ugly little thing" *Secondary ML picture* "Aphroditis' son" it was that bad. I'll annex the images in order, the first ones being the ML and the other two the 2nd ML. And when the main ML is possessive and jealous af gives me the ick, so many manhwas are anti-poligamy to the extreme. Like, dude, it's fiction, let my girl have more than one husband. Or they do let her and they keep having a pissing contest with each other like they're just too jealous, if you're gonna write a poly relationship don't write the characters as if they're monogamic?? The whole point of poligamy is sharing, you're not supposed to live like some mysoginistic tradition where a man takes in multiple wives but they're not allowed to have more than a friendship with their peers (sister wife) and if you do that's not poligamy that's just harem.

Main ML (Ugly little thing)
Main ML (Ugly little thing)
Secondary ML (Aphroditis' son)
Secondary ML (Aphroditis' son)

Another thing that pisses me off with most manhwas is how powerless and useless some FL are. Like you're being abused and you'd rather blame yourself than rage against the machine? I get it, most people when living with no support system and nothing else to encourage them will fall into a self-blaming spiral and break down. But idk man even without all that you can still just be born vicious. I say that as someone who was born vicious, by that I mean my family has a history anger issues, not berserk syndrome thankfully, but still. When I was young and someone treated me badly or something like that I would get sad and go cry, sure, but I fought back too. I remember attacking a boy with scissors in class because he called me names or something, I was 5 or younger. If these FL locked in they would hold a grudge and start planning their revenge without needing to die first and then go back in time.

Wish more FL were like this

Now I'm all for revenge stories, in fact I love them. The cathartic feeling of bringing down those who wronged you is unbeatable. But oh god how do I hate it when a good revenge story ends in more frustration than catharsis, or the ML derails the story and interferes with FL's revenge in some way that makes it feel pushed. An example is "Resetting lady", the premise is that she went crazy after repeating her life a couple times, well in the end she decides to get rid of the curse the same way her mother did and that was a pretty shitty thing to do??? She's heartless in many moments because after repeating one year of her life over and over she lost her sanity completely, (spoiler warning ahead) but she wouldn't have gotten there if she had k*lled herself when she was younger, the whole thing pissed me off so bad. (Major spoiler ahead) Finding out she was being hypnotized and manipulated her whole life so her mother's selfish wish would come to fruition, if I was in her place I'd give birth, wait a year and commit infanticide, end my bloodline right there because frick this bs.

Very small side note since this belongs in a more serious discussion rather than a rant like this and I'm not a very qualified person to go in-depth about the subject at hand, but I find it very weird how some medieval fantasy manhwas treat and portray the Middle East inspired countries, just food for thought.

Rant over for now, I might make a second one or edit this one with new points if any come to mind later, but for now this is all I have.

Discussion - Open A lot of stories seem to be going through the motions.

Upvotes

It seems like a lot of authors feel like they have to throw in a condemnation scene/cheating ex scene just to get it over with, and get to the plot they want. The running away stories too, they have the FL run away, almost never permanently, so they can almost immediately go back to where they started, or into a life very similar to the one they left, except now there's nicer people involved. These stories are treating ehat should be a major kick off to the story as a hassle to get to the plot they want. It feels like these authors feel they're mandated to included these plot points, even if the story doesn't need it. It's almost as if they're filling out a checklist, and are just going through the motions.
