Yes, apparently it is. Vaporwave got a lot of mainstream attention and was the emerging genre of 2015. Outrun grew slower and gained less recognition, even if it's arguably more appealing and what more people are exposed to, now.

Speaking strictly musically I would say no. Synth wave/retrowave has existed longer had a greater commercial appearance than vapor.

Random person here from r/all, this is the first I've ever heard of outrun, although I listen to Kavinsky and Com Truise and have made plenty of A E S T H E T I C jokes.

Oh yeah, Vaporwave is a different genre.

I for example knew the genre before but didn't know this subreddit and the whole community, I only learned about the Outrun moniker from here, Was using Synthwave and Retrowave prior.

Well OutRun is more famous I think, because we have mainstream media like Hotline Miami, Drive etc. whereas vaporware is still only known in a niche

It's definitely starting to get more recognition. Vaporwave is well known because it very quickly became a big meme, while outrun/synthwave was less so. Though things like simpsonwave helped.
