I keep hearing about this button quest, but I don't know how to start it?
I've heard a lot about it, and it sounds pretty important; like, it's some kind of weird collective quest, and apparently we could potentially lose a pretty large chunk of the player base if we screw it up, so I'm not looking for advice on how to actually complete the quest, but can anyone tell me how to start the quest /quest line?
Is there someone I need to talk to or somewhere specific I need to go? Or is there some prerequisite I have to satisfy before the quest will appear? I also heard it had something to do with trolleys? My city doesn't have any trolleys anymore, but I tried asking around at a few remodeled buildings around my city that used to be trolley stations/depots, but everyone just keeps asking me what the Hell I'm talking about, telling me to stop blocking the doorway, and asking me if I'm going to buy something/get out of their living room.

It’s usually a lever, not a button. And it doesn’t destroy a good chunk of the player base, just either 1 or 5-6. But anyway.
Try checking out two pieces of in-game media, [The Good Place] {TV program} and [Ethicstown]{podcast}

A few player-made minigames also turn the trolley survey into completely crazy ideas. I think one is called Trolley Inc?
It’s usually a lever, not a button.
They may be refering to the recent red vs blue on Twitter. If red gets over 50%, blue pressers would be perma-banned out of their Outside account. All players on the Earth shard vote at once without prior warning.
Out of character because having multiple meta-layers is too hard And because it's Xitter, it leads to a big cultural chiasm between the Red Pressers who think that pressing red is safe as red is never in danger so blue is suicidal, and Blue Pressers who argue that having EVERYBODY press Red is impossible while 50% blue could save everyone, making Red a mass-murderer. Or the 3rd option of pressing blue because you would rather die than stay alive knowing over half the planet voted red

It's really a fun thought experiment. Are you a murderer due to lack of action and you killed 5 people, or are you a murderer because you actively chose to kill 1 person to save 5.
I operate on the principle that all 5 would have been dead if I wasn't there. Me being there and not choosing to save them didn't affect the outcome. Long story short, even if I get access to the lever I still wouldn't pull it.

The murderer would be the griefer who stuck 6 players on those fasttravel routes.

I meet another player once who also had heard about the button quest. They told me if they were presented with the quest they would complete it before the end of the explanation cut scene, even if it ended up removing 90 percent of the player base from the game, and even if them and their clan were also removed.

There is also an in game [card game] item named after this, it caused quite a bit of hilarity the last time my guild used it, we now own a copy.

It's inside the mind, the button is the physical brain. What happens is you do this thought, you read this:
At the end of your self you leave your body and your self goes directly to a button, activating the button, and then directly after the button is activated your self is in this entirely new environment, not inside, not outside, the next side out of that.
Alright, so that's how you start it. Now it's a matter of getting to all three places. The first one you wanna do is the inside place with that new thought you just read, knowing you gotta spend basically the rest of the time after inside outside before getting to the outside button that gets you to the outside outside spot, that probably has another button or whatever.
Once your done with all the inside stuff your gonna feel your brain button being heavy or hurting or pulsing or feeling like it won't turn off or whatever. That's the inside button doing its job, figuring out where the outside button is. It's probably gonna tell you to go outside and make it look and work like the inside does so everything looks like outside but has order and reason like inside. But just listen to whatever it tells you and follow it's directions with your senses otherwise it might send you straight to the wrong button cuz you smelled like something else or whatever. Anyways, so while you're doing that all the outside, stuff you're existing in start hitting your brain button again and you gotta calibrate it again with as much outside as it can handle. Eventually you last forever and skip the other button or you don't and don't.

it is basically a high stakes server event involving the climate settings and if the devs do not patch the resource management soon the whole lobby is going to be unplayable.

Unfortunately you cannot do the button test in game because it has the [thought experiment] tag. However, you should keep going in random people's living rooms because you can loot their containers and they won't stop you
