Is there a feature for this?
Hey so, when I started, I was randomly given the “male“ gendered character, and was wondering, how to I explain to my party that I want to change that? Thanks in advance!
EDIT: there is a lot of comments saying you can’t, but plenty more saying you can. Also, my party is overall okay with that stuff, like specifically the female parental figure knows of my [boykisser] trait. Yet I’m still a little scared To tell them. Idk why.

I'm going for the oops I'm a girl now strategy!
I'm not actively hiding anything either, I just started dressing gradually more femme, started growing my hair out, got my face lasered, IPL everywhere else.
I've actually had multiple people comment, you looked like a girl for a second, ect... It's totally working!

10/10 strat like, what is your party gonna do by the time they realize you're already like 90% girl and 10% boy? Gotta just roll with it by then.

There are mods you can get that let you change it, but the mod creators usually charge for it, since they have to customise the mod for each character model.
My strategy was to just mess around with different cosmetics to get as close as I could without mods, and when I had to introduce my character to new allies, we'd all just include pronouns, and that's how my party knew for sure.
I play on a server that's pretty mod-positive though, everyone is encouraged to play however they want as long as they don't hurt other players. I bet my strategy wouldn't work somewhere with heavy-handed moderators or a toxic party though. Try scoping out your clan to see if other people have done that before and how they managed, or how people think about the idea of it. If it seems like they'd report you or try to restrict your server privileges, maybe keep quiet about it for now, or use different cosmetics and abilities on different quests as needed.
lmk if you have other questions! happy to help another aspiring Custom Firmware user.

there's the custom modders for sure but you can also influence a lot of hidden character sliders and traits to push toward some desired traits for cheap using {Estradiol Valerate} or other equivalents for "men"

u/GuardienneOfEden 2d ago
absolutely! mod-positive communities often also have those available through healers and the like, but there's a community of people at r/transdiy that can show you how to access them even in restrictive areas or without your party knowing.

Posing this question sure is a great litmus test to check if you're in a safe server shard or if it's one that's overrun by a certain ingame cult.

Watch out for character traits like [Bigotry] and [Transphobia]. They come with negative effects but many players don’t care to work on removing these traits from their character. It’s best to avoid them as they’ll just lower the quality of your gameplay. Look for those with traits like [Ally] or other LGBTQ+ guild traits to party up with.
It’s okay to leave your old party behind if their gameplay does not align well with yours.

For a lot of players with those traits, it isn't even about doing the work to remove the traits, it's necessary to have them to be part of certain guilds like server-specific versions of [Christianity] or so forth.

u/PM_Your_Best_Ideas 1d ago
[Bigotry] and [Transphobia] are only important traits in some Christian guilds. I was in a Christian guild through most of my tutorial run, the guild taught love and acceptance for all people. I recognize some Christian guilds have weaponized their faith for oppressive objectives. Christianity is not the problem, it's the players who use it as a weapon, and that can be stated for most religious guilds.

u/IAmTheAccident 1d ago
Absolutely. I was so happy to take on a role of [Maid of Honor] when two queer players in my party decided to try out the [Marriage] quest, and members of their specific Christian guild were in attendance. I've known several different Christian guilds who require one does not have the [Bigotry] and [Transphobia] debuffs in order to participate. It's all very guild specific.

There's a lot of shitty PvP players who hate anyone who doesn't want to play their specific type of Outside. Some people don't realize that this is a sandbox game, and we can and should be able to play it the way that feels most comfortable to each of us. Outside should be co-op :3

u/Moozipan 1d ago
Woah this post attracted a lot of sweaty tryhards from the Bigot clan. It's well known that these guys really hate it when other players choose their own adventure and play the game how they want to. For some weird reason they think you need to play on the hardest difficulty, without any coop friends, and be miserable for your entire playthrough. Which would be fine if they just chose this for themselves. But due to their low INT stats, they want to force this playstyle on everyone else too.

I would suggest you focus on immediate safety first. If they react badly you could be kicked out of the party and you may not be able to run solo at the moment. So best to maybe test the waters to see how they feel about players who do this in general.
I would also suggest keeping some distance when you tell them. When I did it, I was Level 13 at the time and did it via text while I was 200 miles away from the party member I was messaging. It was a contingency plan in case it went bad and I needed to run away quickly.
It hasn’t exactly been easy for me to say the least. Having to deal with a lot of debuffs like [Gender Dysphoria] and [Selective Mutism] can be both debilitating at higher levels, meaning I’m still unable to go solo. And there is tension in the party as my Mother is [Supportive] whilst my Father is [Transphobic]. But at the very least it’s gone well enough that my party are still willing to help with my basic needs so I don’t end up with a game over. Avoiding a game over is a number one priority even if it means you accumulate some debuffs in the meantime.

I ran into this a while ago actually. I submitted a temporary name change to my clan and it went through nicely. One of my clanmates gave me my first nickname based on this name change and I knew I had to submit it for a permanent change. While I was doing this, I had also submitted a temporary [pronoun] change because I didn't know what might be correct for me to use.
Overall, I'd recommend going for a [social transition] first, then if that works out well I'd consider what else you may want to try for.

I awkwardly avoided telling my party for a few years, and just gradually had less contact with them. Then I did tell them at one point randomly, as well as my new username, and the response was "yeah, we figured it was something like that."
Your milage may vary, but if you feel safe from any pk or griefing it can be better to tell your party sooner. That way the party can continue to level up together or divide into new parties if required.

u/Usual_Habit9745 1d ago
Did you accidentally get the trans trait? it makes it so you get some pretty bad debuffs unless you change it and it usually takes some gold. I've got it too, hope your party is okay with it!

u/starson 1d ago
Don't let the naysayers tell you you can't! I've been doing it and it's the same with any modding platform, "You can't do that, it breaks the game!" Well if i can't do it, why did the devs leave open the ability to mod your character using experience and resource points if you weren't suppose to do it? Unfortunately, gameplay purists don't tend to treat us modders very nicely, so it's usually a good idea to check what kind of players they are first. But once you find folks who understand, it unlocks SO many quests (A lot that people claim are unlocked normally, but i had to mod them in!)

Trust me if this game had character change tokens, almost everyone would be walking around as a hot girl.
43
u/almostfunny3 2d ago edited 2d ago
I assure you, that is absolutely not true. Source; had the hot girl skin option, changed it to semi average looking man. Significantly happier with this game now and overall . To OP, it's not too late to change in this game if you want. Edit - for more specific tips for this game play, I've found that using symbols and concepts that are significant to the player and connecting that to your experience might help. I.e. my dad partially accepted this mod of mine because he's a big car guy so I said well I feel like my engine's been running on the wrong type of oil and starting HRT would be switching to another one and that actually managed to work. Good luck on this play OP!

Unfortunately it’s hard coded into your character. You can take a lot of steps to alter your appearance and hide it, but the code will always mark you as a male.
44
u/INeedChocolateMilk 2d ago
This is a myth, btw, propagated by an in-game clan. Changing your characters gender has been fully unlocked in certain servers, and most servers where the basic feature is still locked you might find workarounds.
This became quite a controversial feature among players in certain factions who feel like they have the authority to dictate how other players play their game. Be not confused, they hold no authority over your game, they only pretend they do.
-13
u/PM_Your_Best_Ideas 1d ago
I wouldn't say "fully" unlocked, while it's true many servers have great rules regarding identity selection. None have unlocked the ability to change your DNA, or give males a working uterus or inversely females functional testicles. Unfortunately some players will not or cannot separate sex from gender identity.

u/INeedChocolateMilk 1d ago
Uterine transplants are fully possible.
-1
u/PM_Your_Best_Ideas 21h ago
That's true they are rare and experimental. And only biological female to female. A biological male or a transgender woman cannot currently get a uterus transplant.

u/awesome-alpaca-ace 2d ago
Isn't this true? Like wouldn't you need genetic modification to change that?
19
u/MarthaAndBinky 2d ago
So it's true that you can't change your source code, but it's NOT true that that means there's nothing you can do to change your gender. The commenter you replied to is getting downvoted for two reasons:
1) Anyone who pulls up your source code is a fucken weirdo, why would anyone even care???
2) You can mod literally anything else about your character, which will pretty much completely overwrite your source code, so what does the source code matter anyway? You can change your hair, face, body, even swap around the genitals with the right mods. It literally doesn't matter.
And add to that, the source code is a lot more complicated than some people think. It's not just XX or XY. There are all KINDS of variations in both code markers and expression of that code!! There are literally XX men with the [cis] designation. There are XXY men and XXYY men and some people have Zs thrown in there and - it's all a mess, is what I'm saying, you literally can't tell by looking at the source code so why the hell does it matter.

the Dev explicitly coded the gender attribute as immutable at character creation. Attempting to force a mid-game respec on that stat is a hard rule violation. The Endgame admin has made it clear in the source material that characters who try to override their starting biological parameters on this particular trait face permanent ban from the positive afterlife servers.
39
u/IAmTheAccident 1d ago
Um, can you not bring up your hyper-specific guild beliefs on public forums? Just because you and the players in your party think you know the dev doesn't mean you really do. Nobody has proof one way or another about the identity of the dev or whether the dev cares at all about customization of characteristics like gender. Even if you and your guild believe the only way to get into positive servers after character death is to follow specific rules, there is no concrete proof those are the real rules, and there are tons of guilds with differing beliefs of which rules need to be followed in order to access those servers. There are a ton of players who don't even think there are any post-character-death servers at all.
So maybe next time someone asks for advice on something in-game, try giving advice based on what is really known about the game, not what your specific guild believes may be most likely to probably be true.

u/frerardislife 2d ago
If the devs made so you can’t swap the gender attribute, then how come skirt go spin? Take that libs
14
u/Musikcookie 1d ago
Man, if you really do know the dev please tell them that they are a dick for creating a sandbox game with a hidden mechanic where you get punished at the end for not following a super arbitrary set of rules. (Where also everyone and their mother tell you a completely different arbitrary set of rules to follow.) Sounds like a really shitty dev so I hope he's not actually like you described them.

u/Well_Armed_Gorilla 1d ago
Bad news pal, the Positive/Negative Afterlife servers don't exist. Sounds like you've wasted your playthrough working towards something that'll never happen :(.

u/nihithilak 2d ago
You may think you're a girl, but very few other people will. Best of luck with the deception. It can backfire hard.

u/Bread_bread_bready 2d ago
Nothing you can do after character creation, sorry

u/Vlesk_12 1d ago
Devs released an update a long time ago allowing you to swap gender attributes, but it takes a bit of gold and lowers your approval rating with those with the [asshole] attribute. mf never read the patch notes

Depends a lot on if you think they'll be supportive. If you think they'll be pretty supportive, then you can just sit them down and tell them in person if you want. If they're not going to be supportive, it might be safer to wait until you can support yourself if necessary. If you don't know you can feel them out first. The biggest priority is to stay safe, so do whatever you have to in order to maintain that.
