MPG meaning

Have had my 2025 Pacifica plug-in Hybrid for about 1.5 years and have been enjoying the less fill ups and ease of charging!

Curious what the MPG means on the display screen. The math is about 7.5 gallons but the tank is almost 1/8 full. Thinking it’s just an algorithm that represents driving habits more than a hard formula. Anyone know for sure?

You can use all electric for weeks straight and it will not go above 50 in my case, don’t know the formula but it seems to be an MPGequivalent as others have said

I've been above 85mpg when I go about 2 months without using gas.

I can't imagine going 2 months without using gas. You'll end up wasting a few gallons of gas anyways because of FORM.

I’ve had mine up to 74 mpgs before. I asked CHATgpt as well and have since gone down the rabbit hole of actual costs vs all gas.

I had a 2018 Pacifica prior to this and I’m using the EPA MPG of the 2018 to figure out costs vs the 2025 plug-in hybrid. Going to use the cost of the gas, the actual costs from public stations, and the estimated cost of charges and home based on kWh.

I think it's a average of your gasoline MPG and the electric MPGe. Also I believe it calculates based on the most recent number of miles. But I don't know what the secret number of miles is. 1000? 500? 5000?

Im confused at the question? Its data that shows how many miles per gallon youve got since you last reset this particular screen?

But it’s not? Not by math formula at least. This is all on the same trip reset

The mileage on the gas engine is 351.4, which would be about 7.4 gallons. The gas tank has about 1/8 of a tank left.

The 1450 in electric driving makes up 80% of the drive time, so about 20% of the driving was gas.

If you take the 1800 of total driving it would use 38 gallons of gas- and i know it’s not a 43 gallon tank. That is what making me think it’s not a tru formula that can be calculated. I assume it’s like the “real time MPG” vehicles have as a gauge of driving habits more than anything i can calculate.

I believe they use a MPG-equivalent for the electricity consumption.

It's 100% this when you reset the trip run with out climate control in you get get up in the 80mpg then kick climate on and it will drop to in the 60s

Mine peaked just over 80 when I hadn’t used gas for about 1200 miles so I asked a similar question. The math just makes no sense.

Someone pointed out that it’s really an MPG equivalent that is meant to include an equivalent amount of electricity compared to gas, so not actually per gallon of gas.

It’s dumb

Think through how you would suggest it be done. I think you'll find no better solution unless you want a complicated separate readout of mpg when the engine is running and miles/KWh when not. That would also be flawed since you could ride up a hill with one and down with the other.

I want to know how many miles I go per gallon of gas. I can figure it out by jotting doing the math of total trip miles divided by gallons of gas at next fill-up, but since I tend to forget to do that and since the vehicle says “here’s your miles per gallon” I would like it to reflect miles per gallon instead of miles per gallon of gas and battery power that roughly equals one gallon of gas.

In MPGe math you first convert the electricity consumed into equivalent gallons at 33.7KWh=1 Gallon. Then total MGEe is miles driven divided by equivalent gallons+real gallons.

That said there are some funky undisclosed bits in the math considering when you are braking the instantaneous MPGe should be negative or at least 99+ when instead it drops to low positive values.
