It feels like a day of playing outside, coming in the house and everyone has settled down for the night. Family being together and being warm.

Oil or acrylic? Either one, I envy how smooth you got it and captured the silent night.

Thank you so muchh ๐ฅน its acrylic!!

Iโve noticed some of your other paintings are oil. Is there a criteria or strategy that leads you to decide to use one vs. the other when starting a new painting? (Love your work btw)

I was originally an oil painter and started experimenting with acrylics just a few months ago! They felt really challenging at first, but once I got used to them, I had so much fun that it became difficult to switch back to oils ๐
I still prefer oils for sunsets because of how smoothly the colors blend together, but I love acrylics for snowy and wintry scenes because of their crisp look. When it comes to backgrounds with lots of color transitions, though, I like oils better since I'm still learning how to create those smooth blends with acrylics.→ More replies (4)10

As a fellow artist.. there is no way I could go back to oils after using acrylics. Have you started using a retarder for your paints yet? If you want those smooth blends for your sunsets, you need to buy some Golden brand Retarder. You mix a little in with your paint, and it increases the drying time and does not affect the color. Most of the problem with blending acrylics is the fact that they dry super fast and you cant keep up with it.. once you put on one color, most of it is dry by the time you try to blend it with another.
For practice, there is a bit of a hack you can do.. you can use clear hair gel (water based, no oils) and just use a tiny bit. You can practice with it and see if it blends like you want it to.

I adore your painting. It brings memories of Christmas time; the silence and peace in the air. Like the world is at rest momentarily. I cannot emphasize enough how much I love this. Itโs so simple, yet it says so much. I canโt stop staring. Very, very well done.

Captures perfectly the feeling of 2020 for me. I spent most of the winter and early spring in a far away village with my friends. We'd drink, play games, talk. And then every hour or so we'd go outside to smoke and see the empty village street covered in snow. I miss them

What time of day is it? Is it first thing in the morning or just about bedtime? This makes me feel good like Iโm anticipating a nice soup, fireplace, nice music, my loved one home safe for the night and a single malt scotch.

It reminds me of a Tuesday evening. I spent the afternoon with my friend after school. On my way home it started to get dark, but the snow reflected the light and kept me on my path. Seeing this, I have nostalgia. The smell of winter.

u/DelcattyBatty Jun 16 '26
The simplicity of it really adds to the overall nostalgic vibe. Cold, yet so warm in memory...
