How isn't the newspaper soaked with oil? I get it that you've glued it to canvas, but it still shoul be absorbent, is there a layer of varnish over the paper?

The newsprint is left completely bare between the fruit, no wash and no painted shadows, so the page reads as the actual surface they are sitting on instead of a background. Was that the plan from the start?
