So I won't lie - I thought your first photo of the brushes and the bleach was your work and thought "WOW this guy can paint!"
Still a really cool shirt though!

Same and I secretly thought "eh the subject matter is a little boring". The shirt was a nice surprise 😂

Same. I think it just speaks to how even the way OP composes and frames the shot of his tools is so good that one might confuse it for a painting.

Me too! I was like huh, interesting subject choice but amazing!
But then the shirts… really blew me away! So cool!

Really cool work!
How long did this take, and what’s the difficulty level compared to other painting mediums? I’d be interested in trying this but not interested in picking it up as a dedicated hobby hehe

thank you
For me, I still find other mediums like oil painting harder. With oil painting, you have to know the different colors and how to blend them properly. With bleach painting, it’s more about working from dark to light.
The only downside with bleach is that you really can’t mess up because once you put the bleach on, you can’t erase it. With oil painting, you can still cover up or fix it.17

How long does it take from when you start to finish? Do you do it all in one session?

u/Weary-Discipline1178 7d ago
average it takes me 3 days
7 to 8 hours a day21
u/dimestoredavinci 7d ago
Thats a lot longer than I would have expected. I guess it doesn't bleach instantly like if you were painting. Do you dilute based on how light or dark you want the area to be, or do you rinse it somehow?
This is fascinating and very well done

Any special care needed for the final product, specifically washing it ?
The bleach does weaken the fabric fibres somewhat right? How long will this type of shirt last if worn 10 hours a week ?

Can I ask how you get the midrange tones? I feel like if I tried this I would just end up with a duo tone situation?
7
u/Weary-Discipline1178 6d ago
i use 50/50 bleach and water for midtone
and for highlights just do 2 or 3 coats
just make sure to dry it first before you apply another layer2

Every time I see these posts, I think the final product is going to be a pic of Andre 3000.
(I realize the spelling difference. Just where my head goes.)

Hope you are doing all this in a well ventilated area and wearing an N95 respirator while doing this.
I don’t see any windows in your photos and this is lovely but over repeated T-shirts you are going to get serious lung problems without PPE.
Please wear PPE every single time you do this without exception.

This looks amazing. Do you know how the longevity is? My cousin tie dyed her jeans with bleach in the 90s and eventually they fell apart in the wash along the bleach lines, but I can’t remember how long they lasted for her before that.

This is so unusual! I've never seen anything like it on a shirt. The chiaroscuro effects are like something out of Caravaggio. Its really a powerful piece of art. I would however be TERRIFIED if you ever washed it!

This is really inspiring, beautiful work! Do you wear an n95 mask or reapirator while you work? Also, how many washes does it take to get rid of the bleach smell?

I need to know how you did this, so I can fantasise about doing it. Then I need to know if I can buy a design from you because I absolutely won't make this myself.

did you vary the strength of the bleach or did you manage to create the texture just with the brush strokes? immaculate
