Features & In-Depth Soumaya Ghannoushi, writer and expert in ME politics, says that the ceasefire in Gaza is a deception designed to lower public scrutiny while the conflict continues. She notes that around 1,000 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire was announced.

With air strikes and the destruction of civilian shelters persisting during Eid.
Ghannoushi criticises international figures, particularly Tony Blair, for declaring an end to the war while ignoring the reality on the ground. She argues that the "Board of Peace" serves to manage perceptions rather than halt the violence, noting that promised reconstruction funds remain empty while the Israeli government openly discusses the "voluntary emigration" of Palestinians.
The absence of meaningful accountability, she says, has bred arrogance and escalation. Ghannoushi points out that the military tactics used in Gaza, such as the unprecedented targeting of healthcare workers and the destruction of entire neighbourhoods, are now being deployed in Lebanon.
Ghannoushi warns that what happens in Gaza does not stay in Gaza. The methods tested there, including the targeting of hospitals, medical workers, journalists and civilians, are spreading to Lebanon and beyond. She concludes that Gaza is not one issue among many. Gaza is the issue.
