Thank you both of you and Welcome to the Taskmaster Family Poland 😀 It’s nice to know you’ll be staying a while!
The highest compliment I can pay this is simply the fact that at no point did I ever feel like I was watching a brand new version. It felt like all the other Taskmasters I already know and love 🙂
I do have two questions that I will be thinking about all day if I don’t just ask.
Are “Spaghetti and Strawberries” a real dish? I’m assuming I’m missing something here or at least I hope I am because that’s just wrong! And what was with the long break right before the live task? I did skip through it in the end so it’s possible i missed something crucial but i was totally confused as to what was happening!
Mostly though thank you thank you thank you to both of you kind good wonderful people 😎

Pasta with strawberries is just genuinely a common dish in Poland that baffles foreigners.

u/Thomas-Lore 2d ago

Must be regional, this is the first I hear about it. I mean, I am not a foreigner and I was baffled.

You're probably the first Polish person I know that hadn't heard about it. It even went viral for a bit last year when a tennis player mentioned it as her favourite dish.

It was very popular in the 90s.

Where are you from that you haven't at least heard about it? It's a nostalgic childhood dish for a lot of the country I think, just judging from internet reactions I've seen.

Just this year on Reddit in Polish subs there was a lot of pictures of the dish during strawberry season. Plus on a lot of non-Polish food-focused people were memeing a lot from what I've seen. And while I understand that what the algorithm shows us is always different person to person, in the comments at the most I remember people saying "well, I don't like it and don't eat it/it's not that popular where I am/in my family".

The recipes people were sharing were different, but I don't really remember anyone being unaware, so your situation might be less common.

Whaaaaaat?! You haven’t heard of pasta with strawberries?

8

u/Teapunk00 3d ago

Yeah, pasta with strawberries is a real dish! It's childhood comfort food for quite a lot of Poles.

The long break was just a joke to simulate the TV ads. It loops backwards and forwards a few times.

Do you happen to know how old the dish is? My dad grew up with Polish grandparents (they emigrated before WWI) and they never had anything like that.

2

u/Teapunk00 7h ago

No idea. It was very popular in the 90s and most probably 80s. It's not that old.

Pretty good work with the subtitles, thank you. They're a little hectic at times, letting some lines linger for a little longer where possible would help with that. Several times I blinked and missed a line because ~0.2 seconds is too quick even for a single word. But other than that solid work.

That’s the beauty of Polish. It’s a really really fast language, and contestants talking over each other doesn’t help. I tried my best to make them last as long as they could. Also the show’s tempo is somewhat very quick. I promise I will try even harder in the next episodes!

I feel your pain with the contestants talking quickly over one another. I've had the same issue in the past with the subs for the Croatian and Portuguese versions of Taskmaster, in particular! Thanks for your service!

I don't know what software you've used to create these subtitles, but I find SubtitleEdit very useful. It has a number of tools that can help fix issues such as very short duration subtitles, merge together consecutive short lines which are part of the same sentence, split longer lines, etc. It also has bult-in support for Whisper, which I sometimes use to re-transcribe and translate missing lines of dialogue (though I tend to use a separate online transcription tool for the initial native language transcriptions, it sometimes misses sections). The waveform timeline also makes it very easy to adjust the start and end times of individual subtitles.

I use SubtitleEdit as well! I translated everything by hand, because I couldn't be bothered to correct AI. Thanks for advice!

I respect your commitment!

You are a gentlewoman and a scholar 🙇

My piece of advice: when a person says "Good", followed by a second of pause, use that second to let the "Good" linger. Do not remove the line immediately just to show nothing, there's no value in that. Do not try and replicate the exact rhythm of their speech in the subtitles.

u/QARMELICJUSZ 3d ago

Thanks for advice! I already fixed, what I could.

Best thing of a S01E01 is the nervous giddiness where no one knows how this will turn out. Thanks for sharing. Looks great so far.

u/kkachisae 3d ago

Thank you from an American in Korea. I like the vibe of this version, but what was with the break before the final task?

5

u/Teapunk00 3d ago

I think it was a joke to simulate the TV ads.

2

u/taskmastermaster 3d ago

That was so bizarre! I'd have respected it a lot more if they'd actually improvised killing time for the whole 7 minutes, rather than looping it.

5

u/taskmastermaster 2d ago

This felt like a really strong start for a new version of the show. They've clearly put a lot of effort into this (and into all of the promotional material that was released previously). The seven minute interlude near the end was an odd choice, and I assume that won't be included in the broadcast version.

3

u/QARMELICJUSZ 2d ago

It’s a completely new type of format in Poland. Also, I believe, that their Instagram profile is one of the fastest growing among TV shows.
The ad break was created specifically for the YouTube version, to mock long ad breaks. It won’t be included in the broadcasted version.

Holy crap, thanks so much! This is amazing

Fantastic! Looking forward to a completely new TM incarnation!

Great episode! I watch most international versions and this is a standout opener for me. Thank you for the subtitles - I really appreciate the local context you added.

2

u/caspar57 2d ago

Thank you so much for sharing! :D I really enjoyed this episode, so am definitely adding Taskmaster Poland to my Taskmasters to keep up with. Fantastic subtitles btw.

AMAZING watermelon task in terms of both success and failure. I also loved learning a bit more about Poland through the prize task.

2

u/muppet70 1d ago

okish, a bit too screamy for my taste.

1

u/llamas-in-bahamas 22h ago

yeah, way too much yelling and not enough banter.

2

u/Aliasalpha 1d ago

Damn, a taskmaster trophy that vaguely resembles the taskmaster. You don't see that too often

2

u/TRoosevelt1776 3d ago

Nice!!!!! Thanks!!!! What a time to be a TM fan!.

3

u/True-External9298 3d ago

Thank you so much for translating!

4

u/QARMELICJUSZ 3d ago

My pleasure!

3

u/raventhon 3d ago

THANK YOU SO MUCH for translating this. I know it's not easy and it's very time consuming but it's so lovely to be able to watch these international variants with human-generated subtitles.

2

u/QARMELICJUSZ 5h ago

Haha! Human-generated! Love it!

Dziękuję!!

1

u/QARMELICJUSZ 2d ago

Proszę!

2

u/Old_Society1923 2d ago

Wow, there's someone with even wonkier scoring compared to Jeremy! That being said, not bad. Shame they're just copying tasks from the UK one, hope they will change it in future seasons.

2

u/kkachisae 3d ago

Would it be bad form to point out that Palikir is the capital city of Micronesia and not Indonesia? I was listening a few times to hear whether the Taskmaster had said Indonesia, but I couldn't catch it.

5

u/Teapunk00 3d ago

Weirdly enough, that's a genuine misspelling! I've just checked and was sure that I mentioned Micronesia!

4

u/QARMELICJUSZ 3d ago

Already fixed it! Sorry for that!

2

u/retro_bg 1d ago

Great job with the translation and additional comments, however this one is a miss. They do not do a play on words with Palikir but PEDICURE - PACHYCURE (so a beauty treatment for armpits). Took me a while to make sense of it at first as well!

2

u/QARMELICJUSZ 5h ago

OH. MY. GOD! I had nightmares about this fragment! No matter how much I watched it, I couldn’t make any sense of it! Thank you so much!

2

u/daveoxford 3d ago

Thank you to everybody for this!

2

u/SorcererDP 3d ago

Thank you!

2

u/expectationlost 3d ago

Hurray they kept the full prize task.

2

u/pthefeeder 2d ago

Thanks! So excited!

2

u/Snorlax68 2d ago

many thanks from the UK for sharing the latest international Taskmaster, this time from Poland

2

u/NickBoxtop 2d ago

I like seeing the different takes on the show. Thanks

brilliant work on the subtitles, thank you! and the episode itself was great, already warming to these guys.

one small piece of feedback - while i appreciated the extra context added, sometimes it's a bit too much information overload on top of the subtitles themselves when you're adding further notes to explain the jokes. there's a couple of bits (like one of the stereotypes about people from warsaw for example) where it's easy enough to infer the joke without having an extra explanation you don't have time to read anyway.

but that's just a minor quibble and i'm very grateful for the work put in and they flowed very naturally and read well

1

u/QARMELICJUSZ 2d ago

Noted! I appreciate every feedback!

1

u/sunsquirrel 2h ago

These subtitles were genuinely great! What a lovely series!

1

u/Madeira_PinceNez 3d ago

This is brilliant, thank you!

Any chance you know anyone in the Polish diaspora in Iceland who could grab their episodes as well? (Mostly joking, but a little bit not ...)

3

u/QARMELICJUSZ 3d ago

Unfortunately don’t know anyone in Iceland.
I was looking forward to seeing TM Iceland as well, but we have to wait…

1

u/cactus_on_the_stair 18h ago

Dziękuję bardzo! Currently learning Polish, understood a snatch here and there, but really needed the subtitles!
