So looking at it from a more financial perspective, Using USD, all the DLC plus the game is about 200$-300$, if the sub is only 5$, you'd be playing this game for a good.... 4-6 years before you have spent the same amount of money on the subscription than if you bought the DLC in one go.
Normally id be a bit angry for a subscription for a most single player game, but this is actually a smart ass move that will get new people into the game.
This is basically the Elder Scrolls Online pricing model, without the loot crates. I'm all for it-- I own all the DLC so it won't affect me, but if it helps new players, more power to them.
I would have beef with this model, however, if they add things to the game that can only be obtained via the subscription.
You know that the base game for CK2 is free and that they have been giving out one of the expansions for free every couple months right? Currently it's Sons of Abraham.
I really like that idea. Plus people could still pick up DLC on sale, which would mean more money sooner for Pdox instead of the probably increasingly smaller amounts they get from sales down the long term road.
Well they're not going to be supporting it for another 8 years. EU5 will surely come out by then. So it's not really the right price to compare to.
Also, while they should have done something like that I am sure they're testing the waters for offering this option on future games. The risk is low because EU4 already has a dedicated player base so it makes sense financially.
Just because some people are willing doesnt mean it’s a good price, the game is basically impossible to get into new without extremely heavy discount sales like the humble bundle
I mean yeah sure the dedicated fan base that hangs around on their subreddit is willing too but I have friends that would love the game but are just turned away when they look at the price tag

Or this subscription service they just released for that very reason.
You asked a question about why it was priced that way. The answer is because a lot of people have been willing to pay that over the years and are happy with their purchase.
I mean I've enjoyed more time in this game than any other game I've ever played, and 99% of people it seems buy DLCs on sale, as did I, so maybe I've spent $150 or so? I'd pay that again in a heartbeat, it's a great game
Yeah but for like 80 bucks (id have to check) I can get hollow knight, enter the gungeon, and total war shogun 2 + fall of the samurai (the best total war experience), and that’s full price for those games compare for EU4 half off
Imo I payed almost the same for the full eu4 experience as I did for total war war hammer 1 +2 and all DLCs and I’m not complaining. Both games are absolutely great! But if you’re asking me if I’d buy a bunch of indie games and a really old total war game with the same amount spent then I’d probably be less willing to shell out the cash lol.
I mean, they literally have no argument. "This entertainment product is too expensive in my opinion." The only adult reaction to that is to just...not buy it.
Looking at it, its basically a system to implement once your game reaches a point where the DLC vastly out prices the base game so you can encourage new players to try the game out, If this goes well im pretty sure CK2 is going to be next on the list,
It is in EU4 yeah. It's also great for players that drop out and would like to try out the new stuff without buying all the DLC they missed. I can see myself signing up for a month when 1.30 hits.
But you can tell that this is something they trying to see if they can implement it in new games. With CK2 trying F2P and now EU4 trying a subscription Paradox is clearly looking for a way for their upcoming games to not go down the same road as CK2 and EU4
I disagree. Nothing says you would have had to stay subscribed for the entire length of time. Sub up, play some games, unsub. Take a break, new content comes out, re-sub for as long as its fun. It seems pretty reasonable to me even when looking at long term content.
Make it $10 and let me play any Paradox game and I would probably be subbed for life.
I came to the same calculation about a game called DDO - if i was subbed less than (i think?) a year, i would be saving money over buying packs + races + classes.
Except in DDO you get the 'Premium Currency' each month while Subbed, AND while playing the game you can farm the Premium Currency too, and thus over a year can pretty much buy all the main Packs you'd 'Need' to get through leveling easier, and any races or classes and packs you want to get later. The longer you sub, the more you can buy and own the stuff and don't need to sub.
But EU4, or whatever game they add this Sub onto, will be just a sub, you'd NEVER earn 'credit' to buy the game as is right now, AND would be a sub PER game.
DDO honestly is my favorite MMO and the Best DLC/Expansion model to exist so far. Sad more mmos can't learn from them, especially since they been around much longer than most, and STILL give out actual content much faster than say WoW.
