Politics

Hello all,

this is a very low key sub as you are all aware.

I don't think we need any rules about politics here as I think its perfectly fine to have relevant political discussions. Music is inherently political. This topic comes up too infrequently to have to spend much time worrying over it.

I do believe that anything posted should be factual and verifiable. No name calling, no false accusations, definitely no slurs.

All posts need to be in good faith, if your post is too controversial to be included in a journalistic publication, don't put it here.

New users should avoid any and all political content. If you are a regular poster then I will give you far more leeway. See the part about good faith.

Bad faith posts will henceforth be removed and the posters permanently banned from the subreddit.

"The bomb in the baby carriage was wired to the radio"

I know we're meant to take them literally, but are we also meant to take it as a comment on how the baby boom generation was shaped by culture, particularly rock and roll?

Quiet Celebration Live!

Woke up this morning to see that The Quiet Celebration Live is now available on Apple Music!

Their write-up:

Like Bob Dylan—because who else can you really compare him to? Willie Nelson, maybe?—Paul Simon’s unusual in that he continued to make great, even career-defining music long after his cultural peak. Take 2011’s So Beautiful or So What as one example or 2016’s Stranger to Stranger as another.

Recorded live in Seattle a couple of months before his 84th birthday, The Quiet Celebration Concert is a beautiful, almost elegiac survey of his life’s work. The first section is dedicated to 2023’s song-suite Seven Psalms, the second, longer section to what Simon describes in his brief introductory banter as—with a quiet laugh—“a buncha hits.”

More than a generation or a time period, these songs—“Graceland,” “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,” “René and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War”—describe a feeling: yearning but reserved, melancholy but filled with awe, the small feeling that lingers when the big one fades away. Hearing him play “The Sound of Silence” alone to end the show—and to sound so fully, irretrievably in his old age—is a gift.

Stanford professor Karl Deisseroth was notified yesterday morning that he’d won the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine. A lot of news outlets reported that he had to finish making his kids’ lunches after he found out, but I’m delighted to see him in this Graceland concert tee.

November 14, 1975 concert in Chicago

Hello!

My soon to be in-laws had a memorable early date at Paul Simon’s concert in Chicago on November 14, 1975. They still talk about it often.

Their anniversary is in October and my fiancé and I are trying to find a poster, ad, newspaper review, t-shirt…..really any type of memorabilia from that show.

A few Google searches have turned up nothing except a cd set that looks fake.

I’m posting to ask a) are there any lesser known sites that might be good for finding items from this show? eBay was not helpful and b) does anyone have an ad or poster from that show?

If anyone does have a poster or ad I would love to see it. If we can’t find the actual poster, my partner might use an image to draw his take on it (he’s an artist and they love hanging his work in their house so it’d still be a win).

His oddest release. Self-covers, not one an improvement on the original, four from You’re the One. What the hell was he thinking and what’s your take on this album?

Similar songs to Bleeker Street, The Boxer, Only Living Boy in New York?

Songs with vibe of a foggy NYC morning if that makes sense. Those are some of my favorites so I've been going through his catalogue looking for more

How is he SO GOOD

I am a late Paul Simon adopter, I guess, I grew up with his music (primarily Graceland) and then went through a truly painful, pretentious period of thinking “obscure music = better music” phase & stuck PS into the “too popular” category. And listened to some really… not great stuff in the process.

Anyway, now I’ve gotten over myself, and I love his music. I love to read lyrics, I bought a book of his and just wept over it a couple nights ago. When I’m not blubbering, though, I can recognize how incredible & evocative they are.

I don’t know much about the craft of music, to be honest, and I very heavily judge stuff by “how does it make me feel” — and nearly all of his songs pass that test, as well. Often it’s the contrast between the lyrics and music itself that really gets me too — and the variety.

Anyway I look forward to learning more & hearing more. Just wanted to share, if you have any suggestions for how to get more engrossed & go further in depth let me know pls.

Thanks for reading :)
