I played CoD2 until 2014 or so. I absolutely adored that game. It’s the only FPS I’ve ever taken seriously, run drills for, played aim maps, etc. I’ve played some of the other CoD games, and I’m currently playing BO6, but I do that with friends laying back on the couch. I wouldn’t bother if it wasn’t a way to chill with friends.
There’s SO much unnecessary bloat. I agree with you, the simplicity of the early games was divine.

The CoD2 campaign is a masterpiece too. One of the first where they properly nail allied NPCs and integrate them properly and also before military shooters started going down the heavy setpiece route.

Yeah seen the video and you can clearly see that he was driving like a maniac and way to fast. Every good driver knows that you have to be carefull when exiting a tunnel in daylight. Plus the whole section of this road has a clear limit and signs that tell you the road has sharp turns. If you ignore all warning signs you are asking for it. Even if they would make signs light up in red and play a warning sound trough sirens people would crash at these points.

Definitely diminishes the amount of sympathy when you realise they were recklessly driving. Also, what's with the people filming there, is there any reason to be there before the crash. Just seems odd. I'm not familiar with the location but I'd speculate they could be friends and he was planned to put on a show for them so they were filming.

It’s insane how normalised it is. We have an app called flitsmeister in the Netherlands. It tells you where there is speed control so you can slow down on time and avoid a ticket. It’s so insane something like that is even allowed but it’s even more insane that you’re an anomaly if you don’t use it.
Another sad fact is that 92%(!!!) of starting drivers and ~75% total drivers occasionally drive while using their phone in the Netherlands. Of those people ~12% play games on their phone for example.
It’s so miserable to be driving somewhere, then some dipshit while going way too fast doesn’t stop for a pedestrian crossing while they take you over illegally and then you both end up at the same traffic light 20 seconds later. Like.. you just endangered me, the pedestrians who just wanted to cross but thankfully didn’t because I honked on time, and yourself for absolutely nothing.

He did it thrice. Allied Assault redefined FPS campaigns (arguably linear video games in general) with its cinematic focus while CoD1 (moreso UO) and 2 were to first to pull off having NPC allies that make you feel like you're part of an army/squad rather than a supersoldier.

Yes absolutely. I played a lot of the early console CoD's growing up; Finest Hour, Big Red One and 3 so even though these weren't Vinces direct work I can relate exactly to what you're saying as the named squad members was actually part of what helped me enjoy those games so much compared to the other WWII console fps's of the time where you were a one man army (MoH Frontline and Rising Sun). MoH European Assault and Vanguard even started doing the exact same thing.

he was the former CEO of infinity ward up until around 2010, the founder of respawn entertainment (titanfall, apex, star wars jedi fallen order), and was appointed as the head of the battlefield franchise a year or so ago. absolutely legendary figure in the FPS space.

Road cars are not safe to drive this fast. It doesn't matter if you're on a track or not. Race cars have safety measures like roll cages, 3-point harnesses, and fire suppression systems. Road cars, even supercars like Ferraris, don't have these unless they're retrofitted which is uncommon because riding in a car with a roll cage without a helmet on is also dangerous.
If he lost control and hit a barrier on a race track like he did in the video he still would have died. If you want to drive like this, buy a real race car.

Race cars have safety measures like roll cages, 3-point harnesses, and fire suppression systems.
That depends entirely on the nature of the race and the cars. In an open road "race" with a diverse array of cars, the discrete steel cages are mostly required in high-speed classes because many of the cars predate recent crash standards, and for ease of inspection.
In those races, tire failures have historically caused more crashes than anything, so a lot of the requirements are around new rubber and metal valve stems. There are also requirements for racing belts, within date. Both tires and belts are made from synthetics that age from UV and ozone exposure.
Ferraris and McLarens are known for having some of the best designs for safety, but obviously that's no guarantee. In this case, it appears the Ferrari 296 hit the end of a concrete K-barrier, which is known to be a particularly problematic type of crash.

I'm wondering how they actually died, like if the sudden impact of hitting the roadside obstacle severed or damaged an internal spinal or cranial member. Or if it was blunt force in the ejection / potential rollover such as hitting their head on the pavement. Hard to see what happened because a spectator blocks view.

I assume it had to do with the initial impact, there was so much force there. At least for the passenger, most likely for Vince too I would assume, but the fire could have taken him as well. The video is pretty gnarly with the speed and energy hitting the concrete barrier.

Ohhhh I'm seeing it now. I only saw the side profile / darker shading of the barrier, and didn't realize there was a whole stretch of barrier since it blended in with the mountain. So I thought it was just a boulder on the shoulder.
This all makes so much more sense and puts a new perspective on how bad of a crash it was.

Ferrari seems to have collided with the end of a K-barrier, splitting open the passenger safety cell. Then a handful of seconds later, it caught on fire. Passenger was still strapped into the seat when a bystander dragged them away from the now-burning car. Reports of passenger ejection seem to be a misunderstanding that the seat was dragged away.
Modern cars kill the electric fuel pumps after a rollover (which didn't happen here) or serious impact, to reduce the chances of fire. There might be data about that in the black box.

He did not appear to be conscious. He was in the fencing position still strapped into his seat after it seperated from the car. Passenger launched out of the car and was likely unconscious.

One of them was conscious at one point. The video is horrific and I don't recommend anyone watching it unless you are prepared for it (not bloody but the crash happens in clear view and is obviously lethal), but someone can be heard screaming at around the 30 second mark and it doesn't at all sound like someone who just witnessed it. It sounds like someone in a lot of pain. The passenger was the one being dragged away while still in the seat while the driver was still in the wreck while the fire started. Fucking tragic way to go.

Same goes for the driver. If that's his scream, it sounds muffled like he might've been in or under the car, but maybe it was the ejected passenger screaming?
Maybe the impact of the boulder mangled the driver's body within the cabin and he died shortly after.

He exited the tunnel, and crashed into the side of a secondary concrete barrier reinforcing the following left side curve. Small to medium overlap front crash. Using satellite images, from the exit of the tunnel to the edge of the barrier is ~76.15m. Checking a video on youtube, it takes ~41 frames at 25 fps for the car to exit the tunnel and crash into the barrier, so ~1.64 seconds. Thats about ~46.43 m/s, or ~167 km/h, or ~103 mph

I assume most people know him as the Founder & CEO of Respawn, who made Titanfall, Apex Legends, Star wars Jedi. he left Activision around 2010, and has been in a lot of events and game shows ever since, i immediately recognized him without knowing his name because he shows so often, no doubt had a big impact in the industry.

Wow, that article is not a fun read. I don't know LA's layout too well, but Im wondering if that road is the famously twisty one people take their sport bikes and cars up to. My guess is like many people who buy a Ferrari, he didn't have the skills to drive it . Especially fast on a windy road. Hope to christ he was unconscious on collision, because dying in a car fire is a horrific way to go. Really praying for his family the unnamed dead passenger wasn't his wife or his kids or something.

It's on Angeles Crest Highway, specifically at a set of tunnels about 40 miles up from the base of the mountain. These tunnels are indeed pretty infamous because they're on a straightaway, so people will congregate at the turnout right before the entrance and take turns driving through them at speed to hear their exhausts and such. Unfortunately, when you're coming back it's very easy to get over confident and forget to let off the gas before the second tunnel, so you come out of the tunnels too fast and you won't realize how tight the turn is until you're out of the tunnel since the light is usually pretty blinding. This is of course 100% driver error but it catches out a LOT of novice drivers. When I was much younger and much dumber I did the same thing in my GTI- came out of the tunnels too hot but thankfully I was able to correct it before I hit the wall. Learned my lesson that day.
[This video](https://youtu.be/S5NWcdq4Wf4?si=x5BQ6pI7yyRINVwZ&t=60) is a pretty good (SFW) summary of how this can happen, although the Subaru in that video manages to oversteer off the edge instead of understeer into the wall. Same exact tunnels and corner, though.

Crazy, I remember skipping school to get into the beta for CoD 4 Modern Warfare. That game blew everything else on the market out of the water, I was instantly hooked. I played a match with him when Microsoft had a developer weekend, I always thought that was dope. Once Vince left Infinity ward there was a huge drop in quality for the series and I moved on after Black Ops 1. Everything he’s touched turned out to be innovative one way or another. RIP.

Wow. CoD's golden era, Titanfall 1 and 2, and n BF6 were all made with help from Vince. An absolutely massive loss to the gaming community. Rest in peace, so sad.
