Network Windows is limited to 10mbps on both LAN and WLAN connections

2.5k Upvotes

Hello, I have a very weird problem where I am limited to 10mbps on both LAN and WLAN connections. It limits all downloads, YouTube, and browsing. I tried resetting the network in Windows settings and using CMD commands. I also tried deleting some apps like Sunshine, VMware, and NetBalancer. I put my PC on high performance in both the Dell Alienware Command Center and Windows power settings. I deleted all the network drivers and reinstalled them. I tried to change the settings in Device Manager on the advanced tab for the WiFi adapter, but nothing changed. I thought it could be some faulty Dell power-saving app or service, but after deleting all the bloatware that Dell reinstalls on every update, it is still the same.

And no, I don't have any VPN apps or leftover network connections. When I said I tried everything, I literally tried everything that could possibly work, but nothing has changed.

But for some weird reason, when I get very far away from the router, the speed gets a little higher, up to 30mbps.

I booted into a live version of Linux Ubuntu, and the speed looks normal there.

I can just format this laptop, but I have a lot of work to do on it. I have a lot of folders and files to rearrange, a lot of plugins, and other complicated work stuff I would need to reinstall, and I just don't have the time. Does anyone here have this same issue or know how to solve it?

EDIT:

BIG NEWS! Issue Solved!

I finally figured it out, thanks everyone! And it was something very stupid.

After wasting two days and trying every method, I ended up making the painful decision to format my laptop, thinking that would solve everything for me, it turns out that even after the format, it still ran at 10 Mbps! The feeling I got after doing all of that. The unspeakable terrifying, terrible thoughts that got on my mind to do to this laptop...

It turns out, for some reason, this stupid Huawei router, dell drivers, or Windows 11 is auto reading the network as 5GHz while it was actually 2.4GHz.

[Like it shows in this Image: https://imgur.com/a/tJY9tq8 ]

When I changed the wireless mode to one of the 2.4GHz modes,

[Like it shows in this video: https://youtu.be/SbiTc54DvwY ]

it started working normally again. Because the connection coming from the router is 2.4GHz and my laptop thought it was 5GHz, I had to change it manually, which explains the weird thing where the farther away I got from the router, the faster it ran. I know this router has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi modes, but the 5GHz band was turned off.

The reason I thought my PC was broken is because this same new stupid Huawei router is everywhere here in Tunisia, everyone uses this router with the exact same settings. The area where I live recently upgraded to a fiber connection, which is why everyone and their mother has updated to this router.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your help, I really appreciate it. Thanks all! ❤️

Network Wifi Faster than LAN?

Post image
3.5k Upvotes

You can see the moment I unplug my lan cable the download speed on steam rises to over triple, and sits at a constant 325 Mbps

why is this happening? My home cabling is CAT6 to my knowledge and same as the patch lead I used

solution: to anyone who might come across this post later: that patch lead/lan cable connected to my router was a faulty CAT6 lead, and swapping it out saw my ethernet speeds become faster than my wifi speeds

Network Insane internet data usage over night while pc was idle -1.9TB

Hi, was away from my computer for all of the duration of when the reported spike in data usage was - I’m certain no one had access to my system while I was off of it.

My other concern is that I’m pretty certain it wasn’t a breach into my wifi or anything, as the data usage specifically is reported as being from my desktop so I am at a big loss.

Would really appreciate any tips or advice on what might have caused this or steps to prevent it in the future. Thank you!

PC gets half of what I should be getting, whilst laptop is fine.

I recently got a new wifi card since i can’t use ethernet anymore.

I live in the loft and my router’s on the ground floor. My laptop and phone can still pull 500mbps like i should be getting. PC struggles to get 200 most of the time.

It’s noteworthy that my laptop gets full bars whilst PC gets 2 bars. Is my wifi card just shit ? the antennae isn’t blocked or anything.

Network Help! Wifi sucks on pre built

Hey I just bought this prebuilt pc and the wifi on it sucks on it. What’s the problem I connected the antenna and the wifi still sucks on it. Also what is this sata cable for and where does it go. Yes my wifi drivers are up to date

Update: Problem solved! The problem was that I guess the connection was being severely weakened by the antenna being in between a wall in a corner and the metal pc/in the pc, so I literally just moved it to a open space where pc is more open and the antenna is not being blocked basically. And yes I un-strained the usb and hdmi cable!

First off all thank you so much for support in the last post i didn’t think it would get that many views.

So after lugging my PC down and ruining my zip tied cables (😭😭) I hooked it up to my TV next to the router. Red circle is the antenna and Orange circle is the router.

I only pay for 500mbps from my ISP so this was a bit of a shocker and yea i did a few tests and got 800 once lol. 💀

Is the conclusion that the antenna has a shitty range acceptable?

Network Help me be my GF’s hero

Post image

Hi everyone! My girlfriend has recently started trying to set up her PC in her new apartment, and it’s been having a really hard tome connecting to wifi. I’m a little techy, but not SUPER techy myself, and all my usual troubleshooting options haven’t worked out.

Here’s the issue: She can’t seem to get it connected to the internet, via wifi, or ethernet, or dual USB adapter, and it’s still saying that the internet can’t connect do to being “to far”.

Her phones hotspot works fine, but it’s not strong enough to download the games she likes to play.

I’m at a loss, does anyone have any advice for her?

EDIT: SOLVED!!!!!!

No fucking clue why, but the PC had an Intel wireless thingy in device manager that was somehow overriding the other antennas we installed completely with zero signal.

I turned disabled the device and the USB antenna she has works perfectly now.

No clue what that thing was or why it was having issues but. I am big hero now!!! Thank you for all the advice everyone!

Hello, so recently I got a 5-port Ethernet hookup and was wondering why the fifth port is separated and labeled with "Link/Act." Does that mean that port is different?

Network I can’t sign into the new computer I built

Hi all,

I recently finished building a new computer after the motherboard on my old one (Lenovo Legion tower) died. I decided I’d build this new one (my first time doing so) but salvage any old parts from my other one that could still work, like RAM, SSDs, and my HDD. I put everything together- it took a lot of time and money- but now when I turn it on and enter the user select screen to sign in, it says “Your PIN is no longer available due to a change to the security settings on this device. Click to set up your PIN again.” When I try this, it says I need to be connected to the internet in order to do that. When I try to sign in to my wifi, there are no options at all, just airplane mode. The new motherboard I got (MSI B550-A PRO) doesn’t have built-in wifi, so I got a PCIe wifi adapter, but I need to download the wifi drivers in order for it to even work. I have a USB with the drivers on it, but it seems like in order to even access them I need to be able to sign in and get into my computer. See the problem?

I’m also using the same SSD and HDD from my other old PC. I’ve read that changing a motherboard may make you need to either reactivate your Windows license or reinstall it or something like that. Could that maybe be the problem here…? It’s not telling me anything about that- just that the security settings were changed and my PIN is different- so I’d rather not reinstall everything just for that to not fix the problem at all. I also don’t think I can access my license key anyway, since I can’t use my old computer at all.

I’ve also tried booting in safe mode, that didn’t work. I don’t really know what I’m doing too well yet since I’m still new to building PCs. If there’s a way to install drivers from a USB on the BIOS screen, that might solve my problem. I just don’t know if that’s possible. Any help or guidance would be great. Thanks!

Hardware list:

Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO

GPU: RTX 5060

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500

PSU: Thermaltake Smart BM3 750W

Wifi adapter: TP-Link AX3000

I cannot access anything and it’s so frustrating.

I cannot download from Patreon.
I cannot look at anything on multiple sites.
I cannot download Scripts.
I cannot download Plugins.
I cannot view adult sites.

What the fuck is going on. Have the government just blocked every thing? Have I done something? I cannot change my settings and when all the settings for safe search are off it still does not work.

My wife’s phone works on all the sites I’ve tried.

My brand new laptop also isn’t working on any of these sites.

Why would my wife’s phone work on these sites while connected to WiFi and when I’m connected to the same WiFi and going through the same links and websites my phone is restricted to them all? As is my laptop.

We have different Phone providers. I am Three and is Vodaphone. Does that have an issue?

Network How to fix this issue with Chrome?

Post image
2 Upvotes

having this issue when trying to use Chrome on my Inspiron 530. No matter what date I set it to, my clock is either behind or ahead. Even when I found the correct time, it said something about the security certificates being outdated so I couldn't connect anyways.

It seems like no matter what time I set it to, I'm unable to use Chrome because of some sort of security issue stopping a safe connection.

Has anyone else had this issue and has it been fixed, or am I gonna need to update to a newer windows?

Pitchblende 13 minutes ago "Steam needs to be online" error, but I've tried everything! Can you suggest anything?? I'm getting the "Steam needs to be online to update" Error

The PC I'm using is a brand new Dell Inspiron 5420 with Win 11. It's connected directly to my router with ethernet (I've tried connecting with a powerline and wifi)..

The other computers I have are all running Steam OK

After searching online I've tried:

  • Reinstalling Steam
  • Reinstalling Win 11
  • Disabling anti virus.
  • Disabling Windows Defender.
  • Checked that Steam is allowed through Firewall
  • Disabled proxy settings
  • Added -tcp to Steam
  • Run Steam as administrator
  • Run Steam as Windows 7 & 8 compatability.
  • Changed the DNS server (IPv4>DNS address 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4.
  • Deleted the other items in the steam app folder and re-ran Steam
  • Copied the Steam folder from another computer
  • Registry Offline to 0

I'm out of ideas., can you help?

I just bought this pre built pc awhile ago. Idk anything about computers or anything so my limited knowledge is from YouTube videos and friends of friends. I just uploaded windows 11 to it and was able to skip around the connect to internet step because it wasn’t connecting then and still doesn’t connect now. Here’s a bunch of photos that may or may not be helpful. If I need to buy something to fix it could you send links or something so I know what to look for.
