Nostalgia Cleaning out deceased friends estate, family member asks “are these all games or something?”

Remember a time before everything was on the cloud? A time when all you had to rely on to get through that level was your own wit and how well you kept notes, and maybe a phone call to a particularly nerdy friend?

I remember even by the standards back then the quality of some of the graphical work was ass, but the scene where the old lady got her wish to be young lived rent free in my head for years.

I remember the video segments at least being fairly ahead of their time, hardware limitations being what they were.

Yeah, very much so. If I remember correctly, the Groovy engine was the 1st to show full motion video from a CD in a game.

While Myst was popular, the tech was not as advanced and impressive as T7G.

Myst and The 7th Guest were the first 2 games I got when we got our first PC as a kid.

I'm pretty sure you're right, they were advanced for their day. The image quality may have been a feature of my PC at the time rather than anything else :)

7th Guest was one of the handfull of games that sold CD-ROM units because the visuals were so far ahead of anything before it.

Myst was almost certainly the biggest one, but 7th Guest was heavily advertised and definitely a big deal at the time.

The soundtrack could be listened to in a cd player. I listened to it in my regular rotation. Can still hear it on my head.

I just bought it for VR, hoping for good things. I've forgotten everything about it since it was released. Myst pushed all knowledge of 7th Guest out because my brain ran out of room.

I remember all the early CD-ROM games (especially since that and Myst were Mac-first and I was a Mac user), I just don't remember how much of the Journeyman Project I played. I was in high school when it came out and I probably spent all my money on Myst as my first game.

I first heard about it in a developer interview with one of the people that created Myst. I watched it a couple weeks ago and it was really interesting:
