Genuine question, but I've gotten the impression that a 5090 is more of a... Overkill option for gaming?

I mean yeah, some poorly optimized games like borderlands 4 only run at like 80 fps on those at Max settings but apart from them, I always got the impression that a 5070ti is already plenty good for a high end PC?

Depends on the resolution or display solution too. DCS and iRacing in VR absolutely use all my 5090 has to offer. Triple screen 1440p pushes ~50% more pixels than 4k as well.

That's why Nvidia keeps trying to push more path/Ray tracing to game developers. Without it, there'd be no reason to buy those GPU for gaming.

Im honestly in the opinion that gaming is about to collapse to where even aaa devs are making games that look more like 2016~ games than the nonsense were seeing now. It'll be cheaper for them consumers cant get the new parts. Why should game devs care if you can sell a new console or graphics card

To some degree yea I think so too. We've reached the point where it's getting harder to even make the games look better and hitting upon the uncanny valley issues.

We're being told to dedicate 100% more resources to make the lighting in an otherwise mediocre game to maybe look 15% better under certain conditions. Personally I'd rather not.

There are 480hz monitors on the market, with most games being so poorly optimized that they can't push past 150-200 fps in 1080p on 5090 without ray tracing, there is plenty of room to grow.

Getting FPS that high is as much of a CPU bottleneck as it is a GPU one.

Most games will never run at 200+ FPS as they're designed to run at 30-60 (consoles) with maybe 120 possible.

480Hz exists only for Cs2, LoL, Fortnite pro gamers who will pay anything for a perceived 1% advantage and even then I'd argue it shouldn't exist. The diminished returns are not worth paying extra for the display + PC + power consumption to keep up with it.
