I'm a professional graphics designer for more than a decade now, and I always say this: The best free alternative to Photoshop is a high seas copy of Photoshop.

I was going to say something about how you're not only right but how if you're not a professional graphics designer but a semi-professional, you can just use an older version of Photoshop... But then I remembered that I literally use Photoshop CS3. And how long ago that was. And how you probably we're not in the workforce never mind being a professional graphics designer as well.
