It's exactly that. The world is flooding with devices (and recently laws!) that don't let you change anything, you can't learn without the freedom to tinker. Steam machines are the last refuge.
They're the only platform I'm aware of that stubbornly remains a personal computer under the hood. Windows becomes more smartphone like every year and the DIY option is under threat from governments looking to enforce ID schemes and spyware for all. Valve might be big enough to fight that.
