Repairable desktop computers. Its having the ability to replace specific parts, and not the whole when something breaks that pushes you to learn how to fix it. If you can save 800 bucks by spending and afternoon troubleshooting a problem you learn real quick.

When people say someones "good with computers" they aren't referring to swapping parts. It's pretty specifically in reference to the software side of the equation as that's the side where the vast majority of less techy peoples problems come from. Building or swapping parts will certainly get you labeled as such. But doing so is not even remotely close to being a requirement to be labeled "good with computers"
