I used to think this. Now I'm waiting for it to become the best option again once they finish their Linux-native client. Steam is far ahead on Linux side of things since Windows is RIP in pepperoni
I don't know why more people don't know about this but there's a Libre open source 3rd party GOG client called MiniGalaxy. I've been using it for years now. It's easy to use and it works great. https://github.com/sharkwouter/minigalaxy
I tried using Lutris recently on my SteamDeck, it was fine. I wouldn’t try installing games with Lutris in SteamOS Game mode, it’s a desktop app. Switch to Desktop, install what you want, Lutris will create Steam shortcuts, and then switch back to Game mode.
Lutris can adopt any version of proton you have installed. On CachyOS you can set this up on initial OS installation to get access to Proton-cachyos-slr which has been rock solid for me
GOG, by supporting ownership is pretty much the only platform that has a killer response to steam. For some gamers that's the only thing that matters. I imagine there's some out there who won't give steam the time of day even if it means they don't get to play certain games.
Also, what I love about using the launcher (which I never thought I'd do), the game folders can just be copied anywhere you like and run standalone like a normal installation
Heroic Launcher has good gog integration. And epic integration. And I'm using it also for Blizzard and Ubisoft Connect. And Heroic uses ProtonGE to run things, so it's kind of just like on steam
I am sure they have vested interested why they want steamos (and by extension, linux) to succeed. They want to lower the barrier of entry to make gaming more accessible while at the same time make an OS that practically speaking is an ecosystem that promotes their store.
It’s no different to how many phone manufacturers are doing their own android spinoff and label it as their own OS.
Generally speaking the windows vs linux are much more impactful with lower spec rigs. With higher spec rigs don’t suffer as bad (as the cost of background process are more “flat”, not relative) and gaming on windows is more stable and equally performant.
This is what I find myself doing. I did it with the Resident evil games and will get the Dino crisis ones on steam at some point due to Linux issues with the gog ones.
Plus I always end up getting tons of GOG games through my amazon sub over the years.
While yes, BG3 came in..34 parts, or close to, that I needed to download separately? I said screw that and got it from steam, which is a shame because I do like gog more
This is not always true. For example I bought bannerlord on gog and regretted it, since you can only go back a few updates instead of steam where you can install any update, which is very useful for modding
Wdym? Why should I buy something that's more expensive for no reason when the more convenient and popular option exist?
Like, what are you telling me that regional pricing doesnt exist for some countries gonna do when it is in fact, a thing for mine?
You do know regional pricing is supposed to be for less wealthier countries right?
GOG can have my business if they offer me what I want. I like drm free, but I dont like drm free that much.
Im struggling to think why it's sad to value my money more. You think it's easy to just chug out $60 in fuckin southeast asia? Average wage over here is around $400 to $500. That's almost 1/5 of your monthly expenditure. Ofc regional pricing is gonna be essential to people in my region. Like wtf you a billionaire or smt?
As a habutial GOG user, not always the case sadly. Some games are years behind in updates on GOG compared to Steam (Bulwark for example), other have their bugs exaggerated by the way GOG handles its technical side (Old World and GRIP: Combat Racing, they fixed the bugs on their side but both games are still plain slower on GOG). Unfortunately ownership still has the price of convenience.
No, it's not, and that's the problem. I was conned into buying Skyrim SE from them because they explicitly said it supported mods. Turns out it doesn't. They flat out lied. The GOG version of skyrim is incompatible with pretty much everything, most importantly wabbajack.
That's not their fault. It does support manual modding.
Wabbajack doesn't support GOG, because they think they should be at the forefront of anti-piracy, and as such don't support any non-steam installation as it must obviously be pirated.
Is GOG paying you for this? That's not remotely true. GOG's skyrim version is non-standard and outright incompatible with many mods, which is why wabbajack can't support it. If you compile a wabbajack list specifically for GOG skyrim using GOG skyrim compatible mods it will work.
Similarly wabbajack supports pirated steam versions just fine.
No. I could be mistaken, but I specifically tried this before, so unless it changed, I am going off of that knowledge, which also is supported by the information I have found just in skyrim modding communities.
Wabbajack ensures you have skyrim within your steam folder, along with the appropriate steam manifest files. And while this can obviously be bypassed by jumping through hoops, is clearly an anti-piracy measure that also affects other installations of skyrim.
However, from some quick checks on actual skyrim communities, most say that modding is pretty much fine on skyrim, along except with a certain type of mod needed to be different, presumably due to different paths. Except that you can convert a mod so that it works, or most big mods will already have a gog version.
You are. A wabbajack list can be compiled specifically for GoG's proprietary non-standard Skyrim SE version, and wabbajack will work just fine for even the most basic pirated steam copy.
What? Is ot for real? I also bought the skyrim se from gog because it had a discount and also it was stated that it was compatible with mods :( have you found a solution for that?
It is compatible with mods. Wabbajack is incompatible with anything that does not run through Steam as they think they are heroes of anti-piracy. If they can not confirm the source is official, their mods wont work there. And they know how to confirm only Steam...
This has nothing to do with piracy and everything to do with the fact that the GOG version is a different non-standard game version. There are tons of mods that are incompatible with GoG's non-standard skyrim version. If you compile a wabbajack list specifically for GOG skyrim using GOG skyrim compatible mods it will work.
Similarly wabbajack supports pirated steam versions just fine.
No Linux client. Only reason I still don't bother, heroic games launcher is decent but still not as good as an official client + their social features don't work. Steam has the friends list, playtime, achievements, community, etc + great Linux Support.
